Filming commenced late last week, directed by Stephen Sommers.

Here's the cast:

Channing Tatum - Duke
Sienna Miller - The Baroness
Joseph Gordon-Levitt -Cobra Commander
Dennis Quaid - General Hawk
Christopher Eccleston - Destro
Rachel Nichols - Scarlett
Ray Park - Snake Eyes
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje - Heavy Duty
Marlon Wayans - Ripcord
Arnold Vosloo - Zartan
Saïd Taghmaoui - Breaker
Byung-hun Lee - Storm Shadow

The cast is a mixed bag to me, and the rumors that the Joe team is actually an international peace keeping force rather than "A Real American Hero" troubles me. However, Larry Hama has been brought in as a script consultant, so there's still hope for a satisfying product.

Also, Dennis Quaid confirmed in an interview that he gets to say the classic "and knowing is half the battle" line in the film. Nice touch there.

As long as they use the original theme, I'm there. Uh, no pun intended.

Then there's also the catchy opening number from the animated movie.

I watched the cartoon as a teen, and wondered how the hell they could produce a new episode every single weekday. Did they have animators working around the clock, or what?

Also, how can Cobra Commander take a bite out of a chicken leg with that steel plate covering his face?

I'll be happy if it is faithful to the source material -- which means it better have kung-fu grip!

I love the fact that the packaging describes Joe's hair and beard as being "life-like".

Apparently Larry Hama has a cameo in the film. :)

Too bad it won't be as Tunnel Rat. (The Tunnel Rat character's face was modeled after Hama)

His mask is made with unstable molecules.

What I wonder is when did he get that throat injury that made him sound like that?

GI Joe to me is little figures, not those big ones.

Also, i hated GI Joe as a kid. Mom says at one of my birthday parties back in the day, I cried when someone gave me a GI Joe figure.

Mom is a lying wench!

As a teen I started liking the cartoon a bit more but never as much as my contemporaries had.

This international force idea greatly troubles me though :)

I remember when G.I. Joe was one big doll. Our babysitters' sons had lots of Joe stuff, including the footlocker. I even remember the little promotional comic books they used to have.

After the franchise was relaunched with the Marvel comic, I used to read my brother's Joe comics. He really got into the Army jargon they contained. So much so he's in Afghanistan now. :sigh:

My brother in law was really into Rambo, Rambo cartoons, and GI Joe as a kid.

He used to talk about the army all the time.

My wife used to try to counter that, telling him not to join up because ti would make her sad, when she was a kid.

He ultimately never did join, although he just got accepted into the US Border Patrol

I had a bunch of the older G.I. Joe stuff -- my favorite was this Steve Austin ripoff -- Atomic Man. He was in the G.I. Joe line of toys then.

Do I see the makings of a potential screenplay here?

I'm intrigued by this. I watched the cartoons all the time and had most of the vehicles and action figures. I have Copperhead here on my desk right now.

But Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander? Isn't he a little young for the part?

Actually this is source material. Everything else is taken from these four.
