These are all track-for-track reissues of out of print Rhino compilations, repackaged in "O-card" slipcases. The covers all follow this design scheme:

Blackfoot
Firefall
The Rascals
Conway Twitty

The only thing that I don't like about the Firefall compilation, personally, is the use of single versions. For some people, this may be a plus, but I tend to greatly prefer their full-length versions.

It's really sad that the extended versions of their original albums are out of print. They did a nice job on those, particularly "Luna Sea".

I wasn't aware of the Firefall CD being out of print. A friend of mine bought it last year in a store at regular price.

If I remember correctly, several Firefall albums are available from Wounded Bird.

The Wounded Bird titles are two-fers of the following:

Undertow / Clouds Across The Sun

Break Of Dawn / Mirror Of The World

Not their best albums ever, certainly not as good as the first three, but nice to have them in print anyway.

IMHO the Rascals are one of those bands which deserve the deluxe comprehensive career-spanning box set treatment.

I've always loved their hits, but I'm a neophyte when it comes to their lesser-known album tracks. In fact, come to think of it, I've never owned a Rascals studio album.

(I'm so ashamed)!

I picked up that Blackfoot best-of during those crazy days of Tower's going-out-of-business sales. I'm not a big fan, but, you know, a best-of is a best-of. Gotta have it.

What's going on with Rhino?

Shortly before Wounded Bird releases the Seals & Crofts titles, Rhino re-issues their Greatest Hits.

And now, a week before Collectors' Choice puts out a number of Rascals titles, Rhino throws The Very Best of The Rascals at us a second time, even though CC is also putting out a Rascals compilation (Collections).

Not a very nice way of doing business.

And of course there's the dismissal of Bill Inglot.

I think I've completely lost faith in Rhino.

"Collections" is the title of the (Young) Rascals' second studio release and not a compilation.

Yup, I frown about Bill Inglot's dismissal, too.

Thanks for the correction!

What exactly is the difference other than the paper Greatest Hits packaging that Rhino/Warner has been doing in recent years?

Are these expanded or different in any way????

No. They're straight reissues of out of print best-ofs, identical to the previous pressings except for the new style packaging.

I've seen titles in this series at very nice prices at Best Buy. As they are straight reissues of previous titles, some are better deals than others, but they usually offer more tracks than the similarly-priced 20th Century Masters series.

Last Friday at 'Rama, Simon offered me a stack of promos for these reissued comps. I already got 'em all, the first time around.

They actually got the deluxe comprehensive career-spanning box set treatment in 2001, from Rhino Handmade - a six disc limited edition set called "All I Really Need"... it collects all the tracks from all of their Atlantic albums, along with a disc-and-a-half of all of their Atlantic single A and B-sides, and a few odd bonus tracks. The track listing is a bit redundant, as most of their hits show up not only in the context of the original studio albums, but also on "Time Peace", their contemporaneous greatest hits comp as well as the singles.

The book that comes with the set reproduces the cover art for all the albums and singles, and has a fine historical essay. The discs come in a plastic multi-disc jewelcase, also packed with a fold-out poster of the group. The whole set comes in a cardboard slip-case. The design isn't quite as snazzy as some of the label's more recent efforts, but, for the most part it's a very solid package. Unfortunately, it was a limited edition that went out of print maybe a year or two ago (I got my copy in 2004), but it's still available through Amazon third party dealers... last time I checked it was listed for anywhere from 250 to 800 dollars. (It listed for around 120 if I remember correctly).

Mannnnnnnnn...I wish somebody would do a box like that for the Lovin' Spoonful, but it would appear that ship has now sailed

These are just straight reissues. I don't see what collectible value earlier pressings could have.

I should post that on the Hoffman board just to see what they'd say.
