Some interesting news for fans of Carole King and Billy Joel:

http://blogs.legacyrecordings.com/thesoundboard/notes-from-550/to-blog-or-not-to-bloglets-give-this-a-shot/

We’re working on a Legacy Edition of Carole King’s “Tapestry” and Billy Joel’s “The Stranger,” in both cases having unearthed live performances from the period that are so spectacular that they’re hard to step away from.

Carole King is a legendary songwriter who has crafted a myriad of hit songs for other artists but by writing and performing her own material she charted new ground with [title]Tapestry[/title]. Now you can experience Carole's vision in its original "unplugged" brilliance. This deluxe 2 CD Legacy Edition features previously unreleased live piano-voice renditions of Tapestry songs in the original album sequence. A runaway-train success, this landmark album stayed on the national charts for a mind-boggling six years and won King four Grammys®. "I Feel The Earth Move," "It's Too Late" and "So Far Away" were heard everywhere in the '70s on a string of newly-minted FM radio stations featuring adult-oriented rock.

"You'll hear suggested guitar and bass lines, and background vocal parts, because that's the way she plays the piano...that was the brilliance of her demos and that's the way I heard these songs for the first time." --Lou Adler, producer

Disc Two contains previously unreleased live piano-voice renditions of Tapestry songs in the original album sequence Live material recorded in 1973 in Boston, Massachusetts; Columbia, Maryland; and Central Park, New York City, New York and in 1976 at the San Francisco Opera House, San Francisco, California.

1. I Feel The Earth Move
2. So Far Away
3. It's Too Late
4. Home Again

This is very interesting. I really liked when Sony/Columbia/Legacy released the Carnegie Hall show of King's. More from the period would be most welcome. I'm in for the Billy Joel as well.

That blog was very interesting for mentioning Santana, The Clash and the Bang Era Neil Diamond stuff. I hope all of this makes it out in physical form. Otherwise, there's going to be a continuation of some very cruel ironies added to the pile.
Though it is not related to Sony (rather, to Capitol), I was just thinking this morning that I was wishing the first two Quicksilver Messenger Service albums would see some kind of spcial editions done for all of us older guys before the physical medium beomes too narrow.

Neil Diamond's original 'Gold' is easily and inexpensively available on CD from Canada, including Amazon.ca. Sounds terrific too!

And I have been holding my breath for Diamond's Bang material on CD ever since I can remember. 'Double Gold', a 2-LP comp of the Bang material, was one of my favorite listens. And, somehow, I gave it up or lost it somewhere along the line. :ohno:

But the Bang material is also a vexed topic, because of the sheer number of variations in mono/'fake stereo'/real stereo mixes of all the tracks, as well as original mixes vs. remixes. Whatever they do, this'll have the purists screaming! I don't care, though - I'll take it pretty much any way I can get it!

"We’re working on a Legacy Edition of Carole King’s “Tapestry” and Billy Joel’s “The Stranger,” in both cases having unearthed live performances from the period that are so spectacular that they’re hard to step away from."

so we can charge $30 instead of releasing these spectacular live performances on their own for $15

Bannings: If you're not nice
The pre-order listing for the [lilred]Tapestry Legacy Edition[/lilred] is now up, and I've added it to Chris' opening post in this thread. Also changed the subject line so this will be just for Carole King ~ when the Billy Joel reissue comes out let's make a separate thread for it.

I agree completely - that was a great performance. I always remember a great 1993 sold out King show at Pine Knob where she seemed genuinely surprised to see such a great turnout considering Paul McCartney was playing the at the same time. She ended her show on that warm summer night sitting at the piano alone, singing my favorite, the very simple King song "Home Again". Beautiful.

Thanks, Stevie ~ fixed in the thread title, and I've also added the cover art to the first post.

Let's hope that DNA Mastering is not given these projects (as Sony so often does) and that someone who wants them to sound their absolute best, not just meet a "sound marketing profile", will be in charge of their finished sound.

The new TAPESTRY deluxe edition arrived today...the good news: beautiful package, good Harvey Kubernik essay, full lyrics, great sound, still a perfect album. The bad news: the previous edition's bonus track "Out In The Cold" (cut from TAPESTRY but recorded for it) has disappeared, meaning we have to hold onto our old CDs. The odd news: despite the sticker promoting this as part of the Legacy Edition line, there's no slipcase.

Damn, I need to check this subforum more often. Very cool! This album is a favorite. I'd love to hear it stripped down, just Carol and her piano.

That is exactly what the second CD is. Carole soloing each song of the Tapestry playlist at different venues. Sound is great and she sounds and plays beautifully.
