Apparently Steve Gerber has passed away. Sad news.

Quote:
You know, some of these are easy to write and some of them are excrutiating. Welcome to the excrutiating kind.

Steve Gerber died last night in Las Vegas after a long, painful illness. For the last year or so, he was in and out of hospitals there and had just become a "candidate" for a lung transplant. He had pulmonary fibrosis, a condition that literally turns the lungs to scar tissue and steadily reduces their ability to function. Steve insisted that his affliction had nothing to do with his lifelong, incessant consumption of tobacco — an addiction he only recently quit for reasons of medical necessity. None of his friends believed that but Steve did.

The only work of his that I recall reading was his run on DEFENDERS, which was a lot of fun. Rest in Peace, Mr. Gerber.

Sad Announcement
Posted in: Not Gerber

February 11th, 2008

I am not Steve Gerber. I’m a friend of his named Mark Evanier.

Steve died yesterday at that hospital in Las Vegas. It was not a surprise but it was a shock…to all of us who knew him.

I posted a little piece at my weblog that I hope says a little of what some of us are feeling.

I don’t know how long this weblog will remain but it will be here long enough for you to all read Steve’s past postings…and do pay special attention to the love and respect shown by his many commenters. I’ll bet there will be some important words posted as comments to this message.

Somewhere in there, you’ll find a message where Steve thanks his friends Mary Skrenes and Harris Miller for all that they did for them. All of us would like to thank Mary and Harris for helping keep him around as long as was humanly possible…and maybe even a little longer than that.

If there are any announcements about memorials, tributes, etc., I will attempt to post them here, but I will certainly post them over at my site, http://www.newsfromme.com. That’s not a plug. It just took me a while to figure out how to “break in” to Steve’s website (with permission from those close to him) to post this…and I’m not certain I can do it again.

And Steve…if you have a good Internet connection where you are and can read this, I just have to say: There are easier ways of getting out of having lunch with me.

– Mark Evanier

This is sad news. Gerber broke creative ground with Howard The Duck and his stance for creators' rights in the industry. He was a maverick and a unique stylist. He leaves behind a legacy of great work.

Even though there was some warning this was coming, it's tough to hear about another piece of our collective childhood going away.

...This is the first that I read about this. Gerber wrote alot of comics that I enjoyed over the years, Guardians of the Galaxy being one of them. I was glad that he was involved with Malibu's Ultraverse line, I enjoyed it while it lasted. Thank you for your wonderful contribution to the comicbook medium, Mr. Gerber. Rest In Peace.

I was shocked that Roy Scheider had passed, and I'm equally shocked here. The release of the HOWARD THE DUCK omnibus next month is going to take on an unintended significance now.

When I learned Steve Gerber was gravely ill, I considered posting a comment
on his blog to let him know he was in my prayers and that I appreciated the
issues he wrote of Sensational She-Hulk, even though Bryne got most of the
credit. I deeply regret not doing so...

I didn't know much about him, and I can't say for certain that I've read much of his work, but it's obvious from comments made here and elsewhere online that Steve Gerber was a respected, treasured writer to many, many fans.

RIP, Steve.

I can't think of anything he wrote that I didn't like. He was able to see the absurd and have fun with it, and yet was also able to write the serious with a focus that drew me in every time.

RIP Steve.

My young teen years were filled with Defenders, Howard the Duck, Omega the Unknown, and many
many other Gerber treats. I participated in the F.O.O.G. (Friends Of Old Gerber) campaign which
raised money to help Steve take on Marvel in court. Granted, my effort was only a small donation,
and purchases of the Destroyer Duck comic and the F.O.O.G. portfolio.

I am a mod at the Alvaro ComicBoards, and made a few quick message board banners
as soon as I heard:
