Quote: At this weekend’s RRP meeting, DCU Executive Editor finally made it official: DC’s third weekly series, starting in June, will be called Trinity. Its lead story, starring Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman will be written by Kurt Busiek, with art by Mark Bagley.
The series will follow Countdown, but, as with Countdown and 52 which came before it, will be unrelated to the previous weekly series. That said, Trinity will be “apart,” that is, occurring in the DC Universe, but not tied to other events happening in the DCU.
Just prior to DC’s RRP meetings, we spoke with DCU Executive Editor Dan DiDio about the weekly.
Newsarama: Dan, let’s just start at the ground level – what is Trinity?
Dan DiDio: Much has been said about it, but now we can say it officially: the new weekly will start in the first week of June, and will feature as its leads, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, and its title will be Trinity.
The book will be 52 issues, and what’s different about this weekly compared to 52 and Countdown is that the creative team of Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley will be doing the first twelve pages of all the 22 page issues. So there will be two stories in each issue – a twelve page lead by Busiek and Bagley, and backups, both continuing and one shot by Kurt and Fabian Nicieza with art by people like Tom Derenick and Scott McDaniel along with other guest artists along the way. http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=146142

Huh. Another weekly, who'd have thought? Oh wait, EVERYONE, even down to who was going to be the artist. This one sounds more than a little interesting to me though, and I might pick up the trades down the road if it gets good buzz.

I think featuring these three characters in the recent lackluster mini-series 52 Aftermath: The Four Horsemen was a bad idea. That and the sub-par Countdown will probably factor in lower interest in this. The lead team is fine - I just hope the back ups aren't just inventory type stuff...

The back-ups will probably determine whether or not I buy the whole series. I like Busiek and Bagley, but I'm not going to pay 2.99 a week just for 12 pages.

Can't believe a few of the idiots at Newsarama who were questioning why Wonder Woman is considered part of the "Trinity." Sort of like asking why Spider-Man isn't the leader of the Avengers since his books outsell everybody else's...
Besides, Wonder Woman WITH Bats and Supes will probably sell more books than her solo series alone. Done right, adding WW to the mix could make this a more interesting story than your standard World's Finest or Batman/Superman issues...

Edward J. Cunningham wrote: Besides, Wonder Woman WITH Bats and Supes will probably sell more books than her solo series alone. Well, sure, I think that's pretty likely. Superman and Batman generally sell much better than WW. I see DC's "Trinity" as an attempt to promote WW using their two biggest sellers. I mean, it's unlikely that Supes and Bats fans will stop buying Supes and Bats just because WW has joined them. But DC is probably hoping that some of those Superman and Batman fans will start buying Wonder Woman as a result of this effort. She's a pretty iconic character with a long history, but sales have seldom really reflected that.

I may buy trades, but no desire for another DC weekly.

Quote: Kurt Busiek says - ‘Trinity’ is not ‘Final Crisis’ related. It is a relatively self-contained story that follows its own track. It’s part of the DC Universe, but it’s not one thread in the giant plot structure that is a big event. It is its own story. It has a beginning, a middle and an ending. There will be repercussions, yes. It has new characters that are introduced that I sure hope will spin off into their own mini-series or series or things like that, but it’s not leading to ‘Final Crisis 2: This Time It’s Personal.’ …Each time DC does a weekly, they want to do it differently. ‘52’ was about a world without the heroes, ‘Countdown to Final Crisis’ is building up to an event about the heroes and ‘Trinity’ is about the heroes. Front and center.
But it’s not leading up to, spinning out of something. This is its own event. It does draw on things that have been established in the DC Universe over the years but not anything that has the drums beat for it and said, ‘Look here, building up to or counting down to.’ It’s just the way I use history and continuity threads to explore the rich possibilities of the DC Universe. http://blog.newsarama.com/

So in other words, it's a weekly just for the sake of having a weekly.

Well this weekly sounds far more promising than Countdown, which I dropped after one issue. I could get into a self-contained series like that (even though I'll wait for the collections).

I will check out the buzz on this and may download the first couple of issues to see what it is like. I have to say though after the borefest that countdown has turned into (abandoned by me about 10 issues ago) I am not likely to put it on to my buy list. At best this book may end up being bought by me in trade format.

So what's the weekly that spins out of Final Crisis? Trinfinity Crisis?

I've enjoyed Countdown an awful lot as a "Who's Who In The DC Multiverse" series. The storyline itself doesn't interest me at all. Frankly I wish the series would just go on forever and show a different Earth every week, towards no conclusion. Honest!
