Coldplay: 'Our new album has Hispanic theme'

Jul 25, 2007

Coldplay have revealed that their new album, currently being recorded by the band in Barcelona, has a "Hispanic theme".

Writing on their website blog, the band sent an update from their sessions which have moved from inital recordings in London to Spain.

"The sights, sounds and flavours of Latin America and Spain have definitely been infused on this album. The band visited Argnentina, Chile, Brazil and Mexico earlier this year," they explained. "Chris [Martin] then came up with the idea of recording in Spain. The music and lyrics have begun to reflect the strengthening Hispanic theme."

The band went on to explain that despite the Hispanic theme, there wouldn't be any carnival-style instruments on the album.

"No maracas or castanets," they wrote, "but a vibrancy and colourfulness that owes much to the atmosphere of Buenos Aires and Barcelona".

Coldplay break studio silence to talk about new album

Sep 10, 2007

Coldplay have revealed details about their forthcoming fourth studio album, explaining that the album will contain nine tracks.

Writing on their blog on their official website, the band explain that songs being considered for final inclusion are 'Lost!', 'Cemeteries Of London', 'Violet Hill', 'Poppy Fields', '42', 'Yes!', 'Leftrightleftrightleft' and 'Rainy Day'.

The group also explained that the follow-up to 2005's 'X&Y', which they have been recording in Barcelona, will last no longer than 42 minutes, and that the group members have been arguing over which tracks should be included.

"Expect a short, concise record with no fat and at least two top-division songs released independently," they wrote.

The band have not said when the album will be released yet.

I like this. I've grown weary of hour-plus albums. I heart sub-45-minute albums. Get in there, rip out some good tunes, and get out. Yay. Etc., etc.

A most excellent poll, o corpulent one. Though I might humbly invite you to post music-related polls down here in the ICE section with a link up in IMWAN, rather than the other way 'round.

Glad to see you're visiting us down here once in a while -- I wish more of the regular IMWANkers would. So few of us tend to contribute in both areas.

After doing some more extensive poking around today than I have in the past and making myself a bit comfy down here, I'll likely be doing exactly that. Y'all got a good place. I have a feeling I'll be joining you, Jimbo, CBK, Jeff, Pip, Fraxon and others in frequenting both places.

Coldplay close to finishing new album

Oct 12, 2007

Coldplay have reached the mixing stage of their fourth album, it has been revealed.

Kenny Anderson (aka King Creosote) revealed that his producer Jon Hopkins has been working on the production of Coldplay's new album. He told BBC 6Music that Hopkins recently mixed a song with Coldplay's Chris Martin.

"He's [Hopkins] done a mix of a song for them [Coldplay], I think they're really happy with that," said Anderson, before going on to explain that Hopkins had been playing keyboard on the new album.

"He's sitting in as their sort of guest keyboard player," he said. "They've been rehearsing for the new album, and he's sitting in doing keyboard parts, so I think they're trying stuff out.

"I don't know whether he'll get to go and play live with the band or not."

Coldplay: Chris Martin talks about 'pressure' of new album

Oct 31, 2007

Coldplay's Chris Martin has posted a handwritten blog on Coldplay.com about the progress the band have made on their new album.

The group are currently working on the follow-up to 2005's 'X&Y'.

Martin's handwritten note explains: "The self-imposed deadline looms and new songs have arrived. Famous Old Painters + Glass of Water. It's as if the pressure is a catalyst. The pressure to finish has triggered a new writing surge. However, the deadline still stands..."

Previously, the band recently revealed nine tracks and titles for the new songs, and Coldplay have said that the album, which the band have recorded in part in Barcelona, will be no longer than 42 minutes in duration.

I wonder what made them settle on 42 minutes? I mean, it's not like that number is the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

'Coldplay quitting label' claims denied

Jan 9, 2008

Reports that Coldplay are set to leave their record label EMI have been dismissed by a source at the label.

Stories have been appearing yesterday (January 8) suggesting that the band only had one more album to deliver following the release of their next studio album, rumoured to be called ‘Prospekt’ and due out later this year.

The stories speculated that a greatest hits collection would follow and then the band would be free agents.

However, a source at the label told NME.COM today (January 9) that was not the case and the band remain in contract with the label.

“In reality Coldplay are signed to a long-term record deal with EMI and are committed to produce a number of studio albums," they explained. “The band's relationship with EMI is both long-term and very healthy and positive. Any suggestion to the contrary is incorrect and unfair on both parties.”

Based on what I've read elsewhere, whether this sees the light of day on May 19 may be affected by how well Coldplay wants to play along with the new bosses at EMI...

Coldplay deny new album is called 'Prospekt'

Feb 4, 2008

Coldplay are close to finishing their fourth studio album - and denied reports about what the record will be called.

The foursome revealed they have pretty much finished the highly anticipated LP, apparently due out May 19, and are in the final mixing stages.

Writing on their blog the band explained: "Mixing has been slow and painstaking but that's just the nature of the beast. So... give us another month or so and we might just have an album worthy of your patience."

They revealed the names of two tracks recorded before Christmas – 'Lovers In Japan' and 'Strawberry Swing' - and also clarified that, despite reports stating otherwise, their new album will not be called 'Prospekt'.

They have yet say what the follow-up to 2005's 'X&Y' will be titled.

Coldplay finish their fourth album

Feb 21, 2008

Coldplay have completed recording on their eagerly-awaited fourth album, which is currently being mixed.

The album, the follow-up to 2005’s 'X&Y', has been produced by Brian Eno, Markus Dravs and the band themselves, and is expected to be released sometime in the summer.

The band’s manager, Dave Holmes, said: “They’re in the final mixing [stage]. They’ll start mastering, and away we go. I think it’s their best album. They’ve really delivered. It’s a fantastic record.”

No final title has yet been announced, although there has been continual speculation that the album will be called 'Prospekt', which the band has denied.

Speaking to Billboard, Holmes also shed light on the band’s plans for touring, which will include a collaboration with set designer and lighting expert Paul Normandale.

He said: "If we can pull this off it's going to be quite different. We’re going to try something a little different in the arena space.

"They're really looking forward to touring and getting back out there."

Coldplay take more experimental route on new album

Feb 28, 2008

Coldplay claim they are taking a less populist approach on their new album.

The band also claim that their upcoming fourth record will spell a new chapter for them.

Guitarist Jonny Buckland said: “We felt like the first three albums were a trilogy and we finished that. So we wanted to do something different.”

Speaking to Rolling Stone, frontman Chris Martin described their new approach.

He said: “Whether or not it’s good, we certainly started to use more colours. It’s impossible to please everybody, and it took us a while to learn that.”

Producer Brian Eno has reportedly improved the band’s working methods, making them take more breaks in recording, for example.

Possible lead single '42' is reportedly a three-part epic complete with strings and beats, while 'Strawberry Swing' is said to incorporate African influences.

The follow-up to 2005's 'X&Y' is due out later this year.

Bold experimentation or foray into VH-1 Billy Joelesque "world" music garbage?

Coldplay name album with Frida Kahlo's help

Mar 19, 2008

Coldplay have finally named their new album, which will be released on June 16 (June 17 in America).

The record, the band's fourth, will be called 'Viva la Vida' – meaning long live life – after frontman Chris Martin saw the phrase on a painting by Mexican artists Frida Kahlo, Rolling Stone reports.

“She went through a lot of shit, of course, and then she started a big painting in her house that said 'Viva la Vida',” explained Martin of the choice. “I just loved the boldness of it.”

It had been rumoured before that the album would be called 'Prospekt', something Coldplay quickly denied.

Martin admitted that the title he has settled on does have other connotations other than the celebrated artists, perhaps most infamously pop star Ricky Martin.

“Everyone thinks it comes from Ricky Martin, which is fine. I have absolute respect,” explained Martin. “I've been through this before, naming something or someone and everyone saying that 'That’s a terrible name'. But then saying, 'Well, fuck you, that's what it's called, and I'll be proved to be right eventually'. So when 'Viva la Vida' came along, I was kind of annoyed because I'm going to have to try and convince everybody of this, but it just felt right.”

The tracklisting for the album is yet to be confirmed, but tracks believed to be in contention include 'Lovers In Japan' and 'Strawberry Swing'.

Maybe so, but everybody should see Frida, starring Salma Hayek and directed by Julie Taymor. It's terrific.
