REM discuss 'uptempo' new album

Apr 2, 2007

REM have been discussing their eagerly-awaited new album.

The band are set to record the LP with Bloc Party producer Jacknife Lee, and it is expected to be released before the end of the year.

Speaking about the project bassist Mike Mills told Billboard: "The way we normally work is (guitarist) Peter (Buck) and I are overproductive. We tend to write a lot of music. Michael (Stipe) requires a little more time to focus on it. Musically, I'd say we're pretty far along. Lyrically, we're probably just beginning."

Mills said on the follow up to 2004's 'Around The Sun' the band would be "aiming for a more live feel and maybe a little more uptempo".

He continued: "The trouble with making records is that you can plan all you want. But what we find is that the records tend to take on a life of their own, so it could go in any direction."

As previously reported, REM are set to play a five-night stint in Dublin, where they will preview new material.

The band will play the Olympia Theatre on June 30 and July 1, 3, 4 and 5.

[title]Accelerate[/title], the first studio album in four years from R.E.M., finds modern rock’s most acclaimed band returning to the stripped-down, guitar-driven power that first enraptured fans. I just downloaded the cover of #9 Dream they released two weeks ago - it's their first recording with Bill Berry in 10 years - and it's REALLY good.

I think that it's great that they WANT to get back to rock, but like Mike says, we'll have to see what they end up with.

REM album update

Aug 31, 2007

REM are close to finishing their new album.

The band plan to release the follow-up to 2004's 'Around The Sun' in the spring of 2008.

The band, who are working with Bloc Party and Snow Patrol producer Jacknife Lee, played five shows in Dublin in late June and early July as a "working rehearsal" to test out several of the new songs.

Speaking about the record bassist Mike Mills told Billboard: "We've got another three weeks of recording and singing and what little overdubbing we're gonna do.

"Michael (Stipe)'s got a bunch of singing and I've got some background to do, and we've got a couple of songs we hope Michael will finish. And then after the next three weeks or so it's the mixing phase."

Mills said that there wasn't "a whole lot over overdubbing on this record". However, he added that himself and the rest of the band "made an agreement we weren't going to say what it is or not because we don't want to have expecatations out there in any direction.

"But of course you can go on YouTube and listen to some of the Dublin shows and get a pretty good idea of where we're going."

Speaking about working with Jacknife Lee, Mills said he was "fantastic. He's just what we needed at this stage of our career. He's very willing to experiment. He keeps things loose. It's a fun process; he just realises this is something we're all lucky to be able to do, and we're all enjoying it as much as possible".

REM, for me, is kind of weird.

i have all of their albums, yet i very rarely listen to them, i don't even have a CD-R comp for the car. one of the bands i want to like, think i should like, but i'm not sure that i even do like them.

is that strange.

That's not strange at all. I don't have all of their albums but I have quite a few and I look forward to a new release but I don't play them either. I think I like the idea of what they do better than hearing what they do.

REM is one of my favorite bands, and I loved Up and Reveal, but I'm really hoping they finally get a drummer, or just tighten things up a little bit for this album. I bought Around the Sun and wound up selling it a month later because I just couldn't get into it at all. Even now I don't remember a single song from it.

REM name new album

Dec 31, 2007

REM have named their new album 'Accelerate'.

The band's 14th studio LP, the follow-up to 2004's 'Around The Sun', will be released in April.

The band worked on the album in Vancouver and Dublin with Bloc Party and Snow Patrol producer Jacknife Lee.

During their stay in Dublin last summer, the band played five sold-out ‘working rehearsal’ dates at the Olympia Theatre, previewing tracks from the record.

Confirmed tracks for the album include 'Until The Day Is Done', 'Living Well Is The Best Revenge', 'Mr Richards', 'Staring Down The Barrel Of Middle Distance', and 'I'm Gonna DJ', a regular in the band's set on their 2004/2005 world tour.

Frontman Michael Stipe said the guitar-driven LP is "the fastest we've made in 20 years".

He told Q: "I think the songs on 'Around The Sun' are great, but in the process of recording we lost our focus as a band. Now, that focus is back. And it's razor sharp."

REM to play South By Southwest

Jan 14, 2008

REM are to perform at this year’s South By Southwest Festival as they gear up for the release of their new album 'Accelerate'.

The band will follow their headline slot at Florida’s Langerado Festival on March 8 with a slot at the Austin bash on March 12, where they will play at Stubbs Bar-B-Q.

The new album’s release follows on March 31.

The follow-up to 2004’s ‘Around The Sun’ was produced by Jacknife Lee, who has previously worked with the likes of Bloc Party and Snow Patrol.

An official countdown for the album has already begun on Ninetynights.com, which launched on New Year’s Day (January 1).

The site features a new high-definition video snippet each day that can be downloaded then edited, embedded, or manipulated however the user wishes.

Each snippet is being posted in high-resolution HD format and available for download for a period of 24 hours before being archived on the site as a low-resolution stream.

The band are expected to confirm UK live dates shortly.

REM GIVE NEW YORKERS PREVIEW OF NEW SINGLE

New Yorkers passing through the Lower East Side yesterday may have had more cause than usual to pause at a sex shop called Babeland.

It was here, apparently, that REM chose to film the video for the first single, "Supernatural Serious", from the forthcoming "Accelerate".

According to a blog posted on the shop's website, Messrs Buck, Mills and Stipe filmed at the Italian restaurant next door before taking over the sex shop.

Jamye Waxman, Babeland's blogger, is not, unfortunately, much help in letting us know what "Supernatural Serious" actually sounds like. "R.E.M., the band that feels like they may have gone bye-bye just a few years ago, is back," she writes, "and if the single from last night is any indication of the future of their music, let me just say I’m hooked."

I miss the band from Athens that they were so long ago. Somewhere along the way they began thinking they were smarter than the music. Monster was their "Jump the Shark" record for me. Each record they put out makes me hope they'll get the "Fables/Life's Rich Pageant/Out of Time" organic vibe back but I think that band is long gone.

I remember when there was a time when it seemed as though they'd never make a bad album. Now it doesn't seem like they know what made them popular in the first place. Kinda reminds me of Dave Matthews.

Here's an early, very positive review from an R.E.M. blog ...

A WordPress blogger wrote:
R.E.M. is my favourite band, not only have they created some of the greatest albums of all time but the fact that every member so obviously brings unique talents to the table defines the whole idea of a “band” for me. Over time some favourite elements have been pushed into the background or have disappeared completely: Peter Buck’s guitars (jangle or otherwise), Mike Mills’ background vocals, drummer Bill Berry (all of him). This new single brings back two of three, and while the old drummer is still gone the drums can’t help but kick as hard as ever in this fresh sounding new track. The song formerly known as Disguised from the Dublin live rehearsals has returned with a chorus, and what a chorus thanks to the return of Mike Mills’ backups. We’ve wanted guitars, they’ve layered the thing in guitars. This is R.E.M. back on their game and sounding super natural like the band we once knew.**

Interesting to note here is that Disguised wasn’t anyone’s favourite from the live rehearsals. The rest of Accelerate cannot get here fast enough.***

Also, one of R.E.M.'s European websites has made the single available as a free MP3 download:

http://mp3.rem.sk/R.E.M.%20-%20Supernat ... erious.mp3

R.E.M. Prepares To 'Accelerate'

January 02, 2008, 10:40 AM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Nobody would ever confuse R.E.M. for Metallica, but the guitars have definitely been turned up for the Georgia group's 14th studio album, "Accelerate," due April 1 via Warner Bros.

Nearly all the material was tested out during a summer run in Dublin, although manager Bertis Downs tells Billboard a few of those songs didn't make the cut, and that a couple of album tunes were held back from live airings.

Mostly gone is the drowsy vibe of 2004's "Around the Sun," with "Living Well Is the Best Revenge," "Horse to Water" and "Staring Down the Barrel of the Middle Distance" recapturing the old R.E.M. energy. "It's not like we're going to pretend these are ballads. These are rockers," Downs says.

"I feel like there's a confidence in the material, and a communication between the three of us that hasn't been there for some time," frontman Michael Stipe told Uncut. "We didn't talk to each other for a couple of records -- as friends or as bandmates. And we reached a point before this LP where we just sat down at a table and hashed it out."

R.E.M. will tour this spring; for now, the lone confirmed date is an appearance at the Langerado Festival, which runs March 6-9 in Big Cypress, Fla.

"Supernatural Serious" is up for download on iTunes (and you can pre-order the album there as well)... and I have to say: I love it. Very R.E.M. circa 1987. It makes me a lot more excited for this album than I might have been.

I'm gonna hold you to that. :ohyes:
