After filling 2005 and 2006 with two to three movies a week (a lot for me), 2007 was pretty slow.
The last movie I watched was Pirates of the Caribbean 3, which we picked up on DVD. It was pretty good. The Mrs. and Lil' are HUGE fans of the series. I think it's all right. Fun twists and turns, good action.
I still can't get over the idea of Jack Sporrow being a hero for kids, though. He's a feckless, two-faced, thieving villain.
Anyway.
What was the last movie you watched? Mini-reviews welcome/

Super-Bad.
Endearing parts, but overall a ho-hum. I think watching it with a large audience laughinh may have been better.

I end up seeing a bunch of films for free because I've got buddies who run our local cinemaplex. (If it can be called that with only two screens).
So the last film I saw was The Golden Compass, which intrigued me enough to really look forward to reading the book. I like a story where the hero(ine) is smarter than the bad guys and shows it.
Before that was Beowulf, which I enjoyed up until Grendel's mother was revealed to be Angelina Jolie. And as I told one of my friends upon exiting the theatre, it was the longest cut scene to a video game I've ever experienced. I kept expecting a big green triangle or a blue X to appear on the screen.

Into the Wild.
The story is compelling enough to carry the movie, but in the hands of a better director, it could've been really great. As it is, it gets the job done. I will go back to the book, probably not the movie though (at least not pay to go back to the movie). If it is on TV I would watch it.

The kids LOVE him. There is a whole series of children's books in which he is the protagonist. At this year's Cub Scout Halloween party, there were no less that FOUR Jack Sparrows.

The Golden Compass.
I read the book a couple times a few years ago, so being somewhat familiar with the story (of the first book, I haven't finished the series yet) I enjoyed it very much. My moviegoing friends did not like it as much as I, they felt it was too crammed with story and should have been longer. I didn't pick up on this and felt that it moved at a nice pace. Oh well.
Next up: American Gangster tonight or tomorrow night.

I can understand the Halloween costumes, but I didn't know about the books and such.

I took the family to see "The Golden Compass" in the theater. Meh. I'm exhausted with the Lord of the Narnia fantasy epics. The talking warrior polar bears were cool, though.
And yet I still watched "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" last night. It felt rushed.

Our cat Jack was named after Jack Kirby, Jack Black, and Jack Sparrow.

I watched Blake Edwards' S.O.B.
A personal favorite, mostly based on Robert Preston's performance.

Yeah, check it out. He's a more interesting character than Will, sure, but he's also a dirtbag.

Here's what I want to see, but have to wait for DVD because they're either not kid-appropriate or would be boring for the kids:
"Atonement"
"Southland Tales"
"No Country for Old Men"
"Juno"
"I'm Not There"
"Into the Wild"
"Gone Baby Gone"
"The Savages"
"The Darjeeling Limited"

Wow, that's a lot of books. My kids are just a smidge too young to really care much for the Pirates movies, so I've missed this trend.

He's not on my son's radar. I'm just glad that he listed Kirby in there.

Shark Attack 3: Megalodon.
I'm a sucker for giant monster movies.
(and yes, it was as bad as it looks)

The last thing I say on t.v. was the Vanishing the other night. I was lookinig for something to watch late at night because I could not sleep. It was okay.
The last movie on DVD I think it was an MST movie but it's been awhile because I have been watching so much DS9 and X-Files.
I will be seeing Golden Compasses in the theatre tonight, mainly because some friends wanted to go.

I go to the movies a lot. Pretty much every Friday and Saturday. Last weekend, I saw Golden Compass (it's no LOTR or even Narnia) and Juno (hilarious, brilliant script, great acting, my favorite movie of 2007, so far).
