BLIND PIG SIGNS WEBB WILDER!
Blind Pig Records has announced the signing of Webb Wilder, the Nashville-based roots rocker, film producer, actor, and radio DJ. In January 2008 Blind Pig will release Born To Be Wilder, a live CD that was recorded at WorkPlay in Birmingham, Alabama. This project was licensed through Webb's record label, Landslide Records.
Wilder has been called "a kind of Tom Petty for the trailer set" (San Francisco Chronicle). Although Webb describes his style thus: "We play both kinds of music, Rock AND Roll," his unique brand of foot-stomping music also skillfully incorporates other roots music elements. As 20th Century Guitar put it, "Wilder is a master at scrambling the sounds, songs, and threads of British pop, rockabilly, country, blues, and the freedom and emotion of soul music."
Wilder's raucous, electrifying live shows have created a devoted worldwide following of enthusiastic fans. Creative Loafing magazine said his "live shows vibrate with sizzling surf, crackling country, gutsy garage and classic Chuck Berry-styled guit ar-rocking. It's all good."
Born To Be Wilder captures the full flavor of Wilder's live performances, featuring his booming baritone vocal delivery, blazing guitar licks, and a punchy rhythm section, overlaid with a healthy dose of his quirky humor. Wilder is ably supported by his superb band, The Beatnecks, once described by Entertainment Weekly as "Nashville's best country-on-peyote band."
The recordings on Born To Be Wilder first saw the light of day as part of a DVD entitled Tough It Out! released by Landslide Records, which licensed the audio to Blind Pig. According to Wilder, "For years people have asked me to record and release a live album. Anyway, when we set about planning the filming and recording of a show in Birmingham for a DVD, we decided to put more than a little effort into making sure the audio would be recorded in the highest quality fidelity as we could possibly make it. The sonics and the performances turned out so good that we all thought it should result in a live album. The results are here. I'm very pleased with how it all came together. Hope you dig it. Put it on, turn it up and rocketh on!"

I think the album above would qualify more as a reissue than a "new archival release". The DVD they refer to (which came out in 2006) actually includes a bonus audio CD of the gig, which might very well be the exact same album as the new one above:
Tough It Out! is the first-ever live DVD from Nashville-based Webb Wilder and the definitive concert video of the man, the legend and the electrifying artist. The 2-disc set includes a special bonus CD of live music from the show. Recorded in August 2005 at WorkPlay in Birmingham, Alabama, in front of a very enthusiastic audience, Tough It Out! captures all of the excitement of Wilder’s action-packed shows, which the Birmingham News called, "A vigorous hybrid of rollicking rockabilly, toe-tapping twang and rip-roaring rock ‘n’ roll."
The set includes such long-time Webb Wilder classics as "How Long Can She Last," "One Taste of the Bait," "Poolside," "Human Cannonball," "Louisiana Hannah," "Baby Please Don’t Go," "Flat Out Get It," "Stay Out of Automobiles," and the title track; as well as new fan favorites from his latest CD, About Time, including "Down On the Farm," "If You’re Looking for a Fool," "Miss Missy from Old Hong Kong," "You Might Be Lonely for a Reason" and "I Just Had to Laugh," among many others.
Joining Webb Wilder (vocals, guitar) on Tough It Out! are The Beatnecks, comprised of George Bradfute (guitars, vocals), Tony Bowles (guitars) Tom Comet (bass, vocals) and Jimmy Lester (drums). Producing the music for both discs was long-time Webb Wilder cohort R.S. Field, who has produced the entire Webb Wilder catalogue over the years and helped create the Webb Wilder persona.
Special features on Tough It Out! include both Stereo and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound mixes; interviews with Wilder, the band, R.S. Field and others; and Webb Wilder memorabilia.

I've been buying Webb's releases ever since the first LP (later released as a cd with a slew of bonus tracks) "It Came From Nashville" by Webb Wilder and the Beatnecks in 1987. Every LP/cd has contained great music and are lots of fun to listen to.
Naturally i got this (the original Landslide DVD/CD package) when it came out last year, and it was great to hear that The Electrifying Artist hasn't lost any edge at all through the years. I wonder if the licensning of this to Blind Pig is just a way to try and expand his audience more. This man's music warrants far more than the "cult following" status he has held for so long now. I hope it works for him.
"Eat a lot, sleep a lot, grow big, wear glasses if you need 'em".
(the Webb Wilder credo)

Rick...actually...it's "Work hard, rock hard, eat hard, sleep hard, grow big, wear glasses if you need 'em"...trust me on that!
I'm happy to see anything that gets Webb more exposure and hopefully gets him back on the road at destinations a little farther away than he typically goes these days. (Like BOSTON!) I'd also love to see a DVD release for "Scattergun", one that also includes "Webb Wilder Private Eye" and "Horror Hayride". My version of "Cornflicks" on VHS desperately needs upgrading.

Walter, thanks for getting the credo out there correctly, i am remiss (and ashamed, as a long time Webb fan). Almost went to his web site to double check it before posting, but "nah", just had to rush forward in haste. I think maybe "Vegetables" was crawling around in the back of my mind on that one. I'd love to post a lot of the other "Webbisms", i know for a while they were rotating different ones on his web site. "Who Is Webb WIlder?" is one of the best. I also hosed up by not including Webb in my post for "Fun singers/bands with a sense of humor". He definitely makes that list with ease.
Walter, like you i have a nth generation VHS of "Cornflicks", but haven't seen anything beyond that. Wish i'd known years back when USA was running these late nights; it would've been so easy to tape them. I've heard of "Scattergun", but can't recall what that is. I've always thought that there was at least one other feature (short, i assume) similar to the Webb Wilder Private Eye" from "Corn Flicks". Is that what "Scattergun" is?
I had a cassette of a live show for Nightstage from 1987 or 88 i believe, which i transferred to CD. Not the greatest sound, but decent enough, and a vintage one-hour live set.

Rick...my copy of "Cornflicks" is the original that I bought at a show, back when Webb was in the Boston area a couple of times, but I'd much rather have a good looking and sounding DVD.
"Scattergun" is the most recent Webb Wilder movie, very much in the vein of "Private Eye" and "Horror Hayride" as I recall, but still playing the film festival circuit. I haven't seen anything from it but a trailer, but that's enough to let me know that I want to see it.
"Cornflicks" had three films on it..."Private Eye", "Horror Hayride" and something called something like "Aunt Hattie", "Aunt Hallie" or similar. I thought the latter was pretty poor and it didn't have Webb in it anyway. I'd really love to see a proper DVD release for "Scattergun" with "Private Eye" and "Horror Hayride" on it, as well as some promotional videos and the like. LOAD IT UP!
I thought Webb was great in "A Thing Called Love" too, but it was a major release, not something you're liable to get licensed for a release like the one I'm suggesting above. Webb was also in a film (and I use the term "film" very loosely!) called "Pueblo Sin Suerte" which was a mess. Don't even bother with it. It was terrible.
