The best female vocal Neil Young cover i've ever heard (and i haven't heard many, nothing on this cd) was a version of "The Losing End" by a local (Boston) band called "Fuzzy". It's not an all-female band, but the two front people and primary vocalists were women. Saw them do it live when they opened for the Continental Drifters, and bought the cd that they were selling at the show which had that on it. The rest of the cd was pretty decent as well, but they did a superb job with this song.

Here it is:

Long out of print, but dirt cheap through Amazon's third party dealers. There are audio samples of all the tracks on the album including "The Losing End":

The only cover of a Neil Young song I can recall is "After the Gold Rush" (circa mid-1970s). I believe the band was called Prelude (not positive about that), and the vocalist was female - although this was not an all-female band.

I believe the song was a moderate hit at the time, although the group did not achieve much additional commercial success.

You're remembering correctly, Jeff. It's on Prelude's imported best-of collection, which is in fact named after that track:

Thanks Linda.

Prelude's version of "After the Gold Rush" is definitely one of the prettier vocal performances of that era.

Wow, Linda, you can find anything! It's been a while, will have to break that cd out and give it another listen. Hard core Young fans who enjoy covers of his songs really should hear this one.

Ronstadt's version of Neil's "Love Is a Rose" was a sizeable hit, especially on the country charts.

The December 2007 issue of Uncut magazine (on the newsstands currently) has a cover article on Neil Young, and a free cd of artists covering Neil Young tunes. A quick glance didn't show anything previously unreleased, but I may be wrong. Alongside the usual suspects (Paul Weller covering "Birds", the Dream Syndicate version of "Cinnamon Girl") was the rendition of "For The Turnstiles" by The Be Good Tanyas. Worth checking out.

This release (apparently already available at CD Baby and Starbucks?) slipped under my radar:

"More Barn: A Tribute to Neil Young"

A Tribute Record to Neil Young with profits going to support the Bridge School. Features tracks by Howe Gelb, Steve Wynn, Waco Brothers, The Silos, Rick Rizzo, Jay Bennett, and many others.

Have any fellow ICErs here heard it, or heard of it?

Graham Nash told a story on Letterman years ago. He said that Neil Young wired up these huge speakers to the buildings on his property -- the house, the stables, the barn, etc. -- so he could blast music wherever he went. He and Nash were out fishing, music blaring from the shore, and Young looked up and said, "Needs more barn."

I'm a close second. I've also heard of Tanya Donelly.
