Has anyone gotten this? It looks amazing. Before his death, Eisner assembled a series of stories that were autobiographical, or near autobiographical, into a 500-page tome.

From Amazon:
"In what will be the closest thing Eisner fans will see to an autobiography, the great master and pioneer of American graphic arts presents the most intimate and personal perspective yet on his life as a writer, a professional, and an artist. "The Dreamer" and "To the Heart of the Storm" describe Eisner's gritty early life and career, while "The Name of the Game" chronicles a personal history of his wife's family. Finally, two shorter pieces illuminate the bookends of a legendary career: "The Day I Became a Professional"—which will appeal to any hopeful young artist—describes Eisner's first rejection from a potential publisher, and "A Sunset in Sunshine City" provides a poignant portrait of Eisner in old age. The book features famous characters from the world of comics (under pseudonyms, of course) and other historical figures and family members, all drawn with Eisner's characteristic mastery and technique."

Almost bought it yesterday at Barnes & Noble*. Glad I held off, as it's $10 cheaper through AmazWAN. Plus, I want to get Dropsie Avenue first, the one part of the Contract With God "trilogy" I haven't read.

* In recent months my B&N's trades/GNs section has been amazing. Fabulous selection, lots of great stuff. For me, better than my comic shop. Two and a half bookcases for American comics, three for manga.

I've been interested in this as well. The book on conversations with Miller was great.

You're gonna love 'Dropsie Avenue.' That's my second favorite Eisner book ... 'Minor Miracles' being my favorite. I will definitely be picking this one up. I'm also gonna pick up the 'Contract With God Trilogy' Hardcover collection, which looks very cool too.

I'm currently reading 'Contract With God Trilogy' Hardcover. Absolutely loving it. What other essential Eisner should I get?

I tend to prefer the slice of life stuff, but I might be willing to The Spirit a shot.

Angle toward the post-War years if you do. The very early stuff is fun, but pretty raw. The war years is by other people and gets increasingly awful (damn near unreadable right before Eisner comes back). Then in the late 40s, Eisner is in a sweet spot until he starts to pull away from the book as you get into the 50s. Later years are still enjoyable, but the book had peaked.

Haven't read it, but I really ought to sometimes.
