Uncle Rog,
Is there any truth that prior to Marvel's cancellation of SPEEDBALL, there was an issue discussed (or in the works?) which was to feature Doctor Octopus? If true, did you get to view or script any Ditko-drawn pages which included Doc Ock?

Nope, I never heard of any plans to feature Dock Ock in SPEEDBALL. But then, I was just the script guy.

I was one of the three people who read Speedball. Not the best comic ever, but so much fun! Especially when compared to contemporary comics. No wonder it failed...

Let's not overdo it. There was just you and that other guy.
That's two, not three.

I read it to my dog. That makes three.
When is Essential Speedball being released? I lost a couple issues when I was in the Navy. Though right now I really feel like digging up the rest and re-reading them!

Hey, I was that other guy!
I remember at one point one of the price guides listed an 11th issue of Speedball. I went nuts looking for it. . . .
Ditko, Stern and Guice . . . what's not to like?

But that brings up my question to Unk. Wikipedia wrote: The series was primarily plotted and written by Steve Ditko, who also supplied the covers. It was co-written by Tom DeFalco and drawn by several different artists.
I take it the line about DeFalco is partially or totally incorrect?

Stern and DeFalco wrote some stories...but you'd have to do some research to discover exactly who did what.

My question is more along the lines of "Giving DeFalco credit as co-writer but not Unk is incorrect, yes?"( which I'm pretty sure it is).

Speedball debuted in an Amazing Spider-Man annual, then had his own series. It was very different in character from the Speedball who was whacky and crazy in New Warriors.
(Not to mention the tortured-literally-character as he exists today as Penance).

Uncle Rog,
Have you read the recent book on your Speedball collaborator Steve Ditko? If so, any thoughts about it?
Any comments on how Ditko was to work with? How did the assignment work? Were you given a completely plotted and pencilled story to script?
Also, how cool is it that you got to work with Steve Ditko?

Also, how cool is it that you got to work with Steve Ditko? Working with Steve Ditko was incredibly cool. On Speedball, I was working more as an interpreter, doing my best to bring Ditko's stories to fruition. I mainly received rough layouts and copious notes, and did my best to fit in all of the concepts. (Managed to put a little of my own spin in here and there, but that was secondary.) Haven't read (or seen) Blake Bell's book yet but I've heard good things about it. -- Uncle Rog
