TheWho.com reported that this on-line only CD would be avilable on 11/5 (today). However, when I go on the site...guess what...it's not there. Anyone have any updated info on this "phantom" release?

Thanks.

Dave

The site is claiming this: "The Who's 1st official site will launch, as promised, tomorrow (November 5th). The production team have set themselves a deadline of 2359 hrs GMT. Check that out against your time zone."

I believe 2359 hrs GMT is 6:59PM Eastern--about 56 minutes from now as I type this...

You have to become a "WHOligan" which means shelling out $50.00 to join the club and you get the CD "FREE".Talk about fleecing their fans!

Apparently you also need to shell out the $50 and join the club to even find out what is on the CD in the first place--no track listing anywhere on the site that I could find...

I can't say I'm disappointed at all by the selection of tracks. Impressive. :ohyes:
It may be worth the $50.

Thanks for the info Ox!

The '73 Largo show--Isn't that the King Biscuit Flower Hour/"Tales From The Who" show?

Well, that depends. :) The original radio broadcast is taken solely from the Philly concert (booted as Tales From The Who). Wolfgang's put up a stream of what they claimed to be Philly on their site but was in fact Landover (aka Largo, DC). There is much official confusion over the two shows recorded. If I had to guess, the songs will be from Philly as it was the better performance. We will see.

The San Francisco '71 indicates to me that this may have been one of the things that was negotiated for back about a year or two years ago when The Who and Led Zeppelin sent legal representatives out to meet up with the people at Wolfgang's Vault. I still hope this eventually gets made available for us fans who just want to purchase the CD at the website (for a lower non-joining the website price) or at retail outlets eventually. I'm still sticking to my guns and not purchasing it yet.

I'm pretty sure the masters of the San Francisco show were always in the band's possession. Remember, they released a track from it in 1972. If any negotiating was done it was probably over films and the newly acquired KBFH tapes.

tracklist is good if sadly predictable-- i like having so much 71, and i have high hopes for the new versions of a quick one and magic bus, but why not some rarities? some 75 with who by numbers tracks? or some of the london coliseum 69 show? and if they don't make available some new music in the club over the next year, then i'll be pretty ticked-- i'm expecting a live show series like pete did on his website, and hopefully finally the release of the last few remaining outtakes and lost b-sides.

"Baby Don't You Do It" is one of the few B-sides left...but "Going Down" from "Two's Missing" is absent...still, it's good to have more of this show available. But, speaking of Wolfgang's Vault, what about the 1968 Fillmore show?

Aren't they most likely going to just release these shows they picked from in full at some point making this comp useless? I'd bank on it.

Has anyone received this yet? I joined the stupid club on Nov. 7th and got an email saying my "membership packet" would be sent within a week or two and that I would receive an email letting me know when it goes out. So far, I haven't heard anything, and I obviously don't have the cd.

I got my copy of the View From a Backstage Pass today. All tracks in stereo. I love it, for the most part everything is a Leeds mix (Pete right, John left).

Disc One

Fortune Teller (2:55m), The Grande Ballroom, Dearborn Michigan October 12th 1969
-A bonfire survivor! Technically, it's the Grande Riviera which was a different venue than the Grande Ballroom.

Happy Jack (2:12m), I'm A Boy (2:46m), A Quick One (8:53m), City Hall, Hull February 15th 1970
-There is some echo, not sure if was added, venue is about the same size as Leeds Univ. Compares nicely with Leeds, if it weren't for recording problems with the bass the album might indeed have been "Live At Hull." No clicking noises.

Magic Bus (13:50m) Recorded at Mammoth Gardens, Denver, Colorado June 9th 1970
-No tempo change for the first 10m! Finally, Moon can't stand it anymore and pounds his snare like a machine gun until the rest join him and speed things up. A little tape hiss at the start dbefore the band start.

I Can't Explain (2:38m), Substitute (2:18m), My Wife (7:06m), Behind Blue Eyes (4:36m), Bargain (6:41m), Baby You Don't Do It (6:16m), Civic Auditorium, San Francisco, California, December 13th 1971
-All previously released songs complete, some with added song intros.
My Wife - 6:22m (Two's Missing)/7:06m (VFABP w/Roger song intro)
Bargain - 6:22m (Who's Missing)/6:41m (VFABP w/Pete song intro)
Baby Don't You Do It - 6:16m (Back to Back CD)/6:16m (VFABP)

This show HAS to be released complete someday, sounds better than ever! It smokes and is the highlight of the set.

Disc Two

The Punk And The Godfather (4:52m), 5.15 (6:02m), Won't Get Fooled Again (8:53m) at The Capital Centre, Largo, Maryland, December 6th 1973
-Listed as Largo, aka Landover, and/or Washington DC. Punk is from DC, matching the version streaming on Wolfgangs Vault. There is a small edit where the band muff the very end of the song. 5:15 likewise is from DC, the intro is not the one from the KBFH which mentions Philly by name. Now it gets interesting, WGFA is the KBFH version from Philly (12/4/73) not DC as listed! I can't find any part of the song that doesn't match the well known KBFH version. I also compared it to the Philly audience recording. Pete yells "Woo!" right when Roger starts the line "I know that the hypnotized never lie." This is clearly heard on the audience recording from Philly. There is also a small edit just before the song starts where the synth tape starts and restarts quickly, this was also edited out for KBFH broadcast.

Also, the acoustic guitar which is on the synth track, thus can't be removed is louder than before. This maybe be a case where the recording is so clear you can hear more. The acoustic may be more enhanced as it is on the left channel while Pete's electric is on the right channel. The acoustic is on every live WGFA ever played but most of the time can't be heard. It should be noted these tracks sound great, much better than the KBFH broadcast and someday a complete Quad '73 show needs to be released.

Young Man Blues (5:57m), Tattoo (3:21m), Boris The Spider (3:14m), Naked Eye/Let's See Action/My Generation Blues (14:40m) Charlton Athletic Football Club, South London, May 18th 1974
-Dry mix, no echo or delay like the BBC TV broadcast. I think it sounds better this way.

Squeeze Box (3:17m), Dreaming From The Waist (4:54m), Fiddle About (1:45m), Pinball Wizard (2:48m), I'm Free (2:17m), Tommy's Holiday Camp (0.51m), We're Not Gonna Take It (3:32m), See Me, Feel Me/Listening To You (4:39m), Vetch Field, Swansea, Wales, June 12th 1976
-All previously released tracks complete.
Squeeze Box - 3:13m By #'s CD/3:17m VFABP
Dreaming From The Waist - 4:57m By #'s CD/4:54m VFABP

Cardboard sleeves and booklet in a slipcase. Booklet is mainly photos, some taken from the gigs on the CD. The booklet cover photo is from Swansea.
Produced by Bob Pridden
Compiled and Mastered by Jon Astley
Mixed by Bob Pridden and Sean Witt

Well, that's my take on it. If you live in the US I would say you should get the CDs this week if you haven't already.
