I don't know if this is replacing full show releases or is another kind of series besides full shows but here it is:
http://www.deadnetstore.com/
Road Trips Vol. 1, No. 1
Price: $19.98
Grateful Dead is very pleased to announce the debut of a new series of archival releases—Road Trips!
Road Trips tries something new, spotlighting different tours and series of shows that have perhaps been overlooked through the years. Take Road Trips Volume 1, Number 1, for instance. This two-disc set (plus a special Bonus Disc for a limited time only) was culled from the Dead’s blazing Fall 1979 East Coast swing, when the band was just hitting its stride with new keyboardist Brent Mydland. You’ll find killer versions of “Dancing in the Street” > “Franklin’s Tower,” long exploratory jams on “Playing in the Band” and “Terrapin,” a rattle-your-brain “Shakedown,” and lots more, all pulled from the master tapes in the vault and expertly mastered in HDCD for maximum power and clarity by Jeffrey Norman. The Bonus Disc offers another hour-and-a-quarter of highlights from the tour. Road Trips Volume 1, Number 1 comes with a beautifully designed booklet containing an essay about how the music on the discs fits into the Dead’s long history, plus many rare and never-before-seen photographs. We think you’ll agree it’s a pretty cool package.
Click here to view the Road Trips page, featuring news clippings, reviews, and more cool stuff from the Fall '79 Tour!
Don't forget, the Bonus Disc is only available for a limited time. Order your copy now!
TRACKLIST
DISC 1:
1) Alabama Getaway
2) Promised Land
3) Jack Straw
4) Deal
5) Dancing In the Street
6) Franklin's Tower
7) Wharf Rat
8) I Need a Miracle
9) Bertha
10) Good Lovin'
DISC 2
1) Shakedown Street
2) Passenger
3) Terrapin Station
4) Playing In the Band
5) Not Fade Away
6) Morning Dew
BONUS DISC
1) China Cat Sunflower
2) I Know You Rider
3) Lost Sailor
4) Saint of Circumstance
5) Jam
6) Althea
7) Estimated Prophet
8) He's Gone
9) Jam
I also don't know if they are going to release this to other dealers, if so you might get cheaper shipping elsewhere. The deadstore is kind of a rip-off in that department.

There is a page devoted to questions and answers:
http://www.dead.net/features/release-in ... road-trips
Dick's Picks is done. Full shows will continue to be released but in a different format.
There is also a page listing the dates the songs on RT V.1 come from for those that are interested in that:

Federico,
I need your honest and gut-level opinion on this. Based on the fact that my collection of GD shows is from the beginning on up to shows from 1978, should I get this '79 collection in lieu of getting full show '79 CDs?
One side of me is telling me that it might be nice to have this simply because it will give me a nice sampling of '79 without having to go full-bore. The only thing leveling things out is that I've heard up and down opinions on '79. You know me, what direction should I take?
The news that GD material is back for offering is fantastic. I do like the fact that full shows will still be offered. This new Road Trips series (my conjecture) may be made up of shows where perhaps the tapes at the shows had imperfections in some spots and only certain songs were salvageable or it may be a case of some shows where only certain sections of shows were particularly hot and they decided a good series would come from taking the good from those given shows. I'm thinking it might be both or else I might be completely wrong as well. I'm just doing some serious thinking whether I should take the plunge for this one or not.

By this point in 1979 the band had really gotten it together. This was a very strong series of shows. It is definitely worth getting.
If you want a full show from the period DP5 is very good (disc 2 is one of my all-time favorites) but this will almost certainly have better sound.
I am surprised they went with the Nov.9 Buffalo Dancing in the Streets -> Franklin's Tower instead of the October Cape Cod version but that's probably nit-picking.
In general I like the idea of best-of-runs as long as they will still release full shows.

This is interesting...have not read the FAQ yet...but will be getting. I enjoy complete shows, but I like the idea of highlights as well. I think the 90s would be an excellent period for this series, considering how hit or miss they / Jerry had become.
Bummer about no more DP... I'm a huge fan of DP's 5 - disc 2 as well! Love that Uncle John's Band - and the encore of Shakedown > UJB is pretty sweet.
No Pure Jerry releases recently, huh?
As always, thanks for the heads up!

I am pretty sure the Garcia estate is tangled in some legal problems. I don't think we'll see anything until those get straightend out.

Federico, Do you have any idea what the average s/h fee is? I spent some time on the site, & all I could find is "Shipping rates are calculated based on the products' weights, sizes and any associated handling fees".
I know that UPS isn't cheap.

I paid a whopping $8+ for s/h but someone else on DNC reported $5.
I don't know why there would be a three dollar difference. If I had seen that option I certainly would have taken it.
Of course it might be that my vision gets blurry when new GD product comes out. I have been known to do dumb things in the heat of the moment.
Still, I rationalized it by figuring less than $30 for three discs is not a horrible price.

When I ordered, the default was the UPS Ground for $8 - the last option was $5 for us postal...which I opted for...all together 3 discs for $25 - while steep on shipping I was pleasantly pleased/surprised that they manage to keep the basic prices basically in line with their past items (considering the new business owners).

Ugh, I didn't see the option. My point exactly. If they give me new product I will Hoover it up almost mindlessly. (I hear Idiot Wind playing in my head as I type. )

That's some of the chat at DNC. Not sure if it is wishful thinking or accurately reading between the lines. That would be tremendous news.

Received mine last night.
Great to have some "new" Dead after such a dry spell. Have only listened to a few tracks on the bonus disc, and it *sparkles* - no doubt by the recent addition of Brent - which is the general focus of the notes.
Always liked Brent, particularly his vocals, and he was a helluva player. I can understand why the boys wanted to get more of an electric keyboard presence, but I always prefered the piano of Keith (I feel most of their best material was better suited for piano).
I do take exception with the packaging. I'm not as down on digipacks as many here, but this is really disappointing. It doesn't even qualify as digipack, but those awful recycled cardboard jackets I associate mostly with Neil Young.
Its a sunny day in Chicago, and nothing like some Dead music to blast through the yard / neighborhood as I prep for the winter.
Have a grate day!

I prefer Keith over Brent, but the good news is NO MORE DONNA & her flat vocals.

Mine was one of the ones which arrived in my mail with no bonus disc. I have made contact with the people over at the Dead site and I hope to have my replacement taken care of soon.

Still haven't received mine even though I paid the UPS ground price.
Apparently a lot of people did not receive the bonus disc. Rhino said a whole box went out wrong. They are trying to fix it.

Double wow! I went with the cheap Postal Service rate, and managed to get the bonus disc. This new business arrangement simply reinforces the incompetence of corporations...
As a complete sidebar, but of interest to some in this thread - I received from BMG both the Coltrane @ Newport and Mingus w/ Dolphy concert yesterday...looking forward to my commutes this week.

Two of my favorite jazz vault issues. After you listen I'd love to know what you think. Maybe PM me instead of clogging up the thread.

Or better yet, post about them in the "Different Strokes" section where you'll find a lot of jazz threads!

I hope I didn't offend with my post, it certainly wasn't my intention.

Nope, not at all, I got that you just wanted to hear what he thought. I think posting in D/S would be the perfect solution.
Now, I got RT today and without listening to a note Rhino has ticked me off. As I said above, I screwed up and picked the default shipping option of UPS Ground for $8.04. My fault. But... RT finally arrived today after shipping on 11/6 with USPS postage of $1.81!
I have an e-mail in to Rhino to find out what the deal is.
I did get the bonus disc though.
