New studio album released on their own label: With young, British, soul stars like Amy Winehouse, Paolo Nutini, and Joss Stone crashing the American charts, what better time to celebrate the return of one of the original great blue-eyed soul singers, Simply Red's curly-mopped Mick Hucknall? Despite being dropped by its label in 2002, his band has flourished on its own, both artistically and commercially. [title]Stay[/title], Simply Red's third independent release, loses none of the crisp soul-jazz beauty that marked the group's late '80s heyday. It has a younger, fresher feel than 2003's elegant Home, but that does lead to more of a mixed bag. A pair of bite-the-hand-that-feeds protest tunes, "Money TV" and "The Death of the Cool," fall wide of the mark, but Hucknall makes up for it when he lets his shimmering voice rise above the electronic fanfare, delivering the classic love song "So Not Over You." Meanwhile, "They Don't Know" and the lively "Oh! What A Girl" prove that he can still give the new generation of soul singers a run for their money. 1. The World And You Tonight 3:33 2. So Not Over You 3:50 3. Stay 3:04 4. They Don't Know 3:39 5. Oh! What A Girl! 4:19 6. Good Times Have Done Me Wrong 5:20 7. Debris 4:52 8. Lady 5:00 9. Money TV 4:05 10. Simply Red to split
Oct 25, 2007
Simply Red are set to split in 2009, it has been announced.
Lead singer Mick Hucknall has said that their current album 'Stay' will be their last and that they will disband after their tour, due to end in two years time.
He said: "I've kind of decided that the 25 years is going to be enough."
Hucknall revealed that he wants to concentrate on an album of his own.
He said: "I've just recorded an album that is a tribute to Bobby Bland, a blues and R&B artist. It's a solo project and I've really enjoyed it - so much that I feel the time has come now to just put a book-end to the [Simply Red] story."
The singer added that he planned to "invent a new form of music," which was influenced by R&B tracks from the 1960s.
He told Gold radio network: "It's a big challenge, but I can't do it under the name of Simply Red."

I imagine that, at this stage of the game, it would be quite a chore to "invent a new form of music." Who can blame Huncknall for ridding himself of distractions?
Of course, if it doesn't work out (influenced by 60s R&B? Yeah, like nobody's tried that before), Simply Red can always do a reunion album and tour 3 or 4 years down the line.
