Do you collect mostly so you can say, "Yes! I got it!!", in other words, the thrill of the hunt, or do you collect because you actually intend on listening to your collection? I am 47 and I have probably 2500 cds, which I realize pales in comparison to most on here. There is no way I will ever be able to listen to all of these cds in my lifetime. I'd have to listen to 7 every day over a year's time. As Don Henley wrote, "They don't make no hearses with luggage racks", i.e., you can't take it with you. Is your collection a legacy to be passed down? Do you turn around and resell them? I personally have pretty much reached the point of saturation in my collection. I sell a lot on amazon just basically to weed out my collection. I am just curious as to other's viewpoints on this collector's site. I recall a similar thread on the old Ice Board, so I apologize if this is redundant. I seem to remember that thread being more along the lines of discussing the sheer size of collections.

I mainly collect so I can play a favorite song or album any time I feel the need too.

Everything I buy is something I want to listen to many many times. I don't collect just to have something sit on a shelf.

Unfortunately the more you buy, the less you get to listen to all the stuff you own.

The invention of the IPOD helps as you can easily take much of your collection with you at all times.

I do like to physically own the music.

I have a somewhat obsessive and an addictive personality. Music is the least of all the evils for me.

I get a rush when I find/buy/or receive something I've been looking for. I like to hold it in my hands, open it, read the liners, listen, and select the worthy tracks to import into my iPod. I even treat that last step with attention and reverence: only the cream of the crop makes it in, all ID3 tag info is corrected and completed, and LAME is my encoder of choice. And I generally avoid downloading from iTunes or other services, though I do have a Rhapsody account which I use mostly to sample cuts in full and decide whether or not to physically purchase it.

I love music...any kind of music...

It's good to know we're not alone out there! I have a definite obsession with collecting CD's (probably 2,000?). I feel the compulsion to be a completist for the artists I really enjoy (sick when you consider I probably have at least 40 Jethro Tull recordings including imports, compiliations, live stuff, a few boots, etc.), as well as the need to have the best, latest remastered version available -- also kinda sick when you're buying your 3rd remastered version of Steely Dan/Aja or Pink Floyd/Dark Side of the Moon. (Even though I understand many Hoffa's out there despise recent remasters, I can't say I prefer older mastering on hardly any I own. Yes, there are some that sound a bit too bright, but I usually prefer that to the muddy, flat tones of some of the first analog-transferred cd's).

I only listen at home & in the car, so CD's suit me fine. I'm not into the sound quality of my PC or my son's Ipod, so downloading just wouldn't work for me, & I prefer the physical product anyhow.

Guess I'm also somewhat of a purist when it comes to packaging/contents. I wish all remastered cd's were available as mini-LP sleeves with no bonus tracks, original stereo (or mono) mixes only - just miniature duplications that sound great of the original albums I loved from '62 to when I bought my first CD player in '85.

Yes, I buy new music & newer artists (sometimes!), and don't really care about packaging, etc. on them since I never had an original LP of the album. But I can do without the ECD's, DVD extras, etc. I mainly just want the music at a decent price!

So much above rings true here. Have 5000+ cds, and only just recently got back into vinyl after twenty years or so of cds only (I probably bought fifty albums just this past week on EBay). I'm a jazzbo and have recently realized how much is not yet on cd. I have an iPod but never use it - in fact don't really care for it. I use iTunes at work for listening and the occasional download. But I want my grubby hands on something - lp or cd. :ohyes:

To be honest, it's some of both. Though I'm pretty good about listening to everything I buy. My unwatched film collection is another story, though. I have at least 300 unwatched dvd's. Probably more.

I always have mixed feelings when an artist I collect hardcore comes out with a b-sides set. On the one hand, I like having all the songs in one place with (usually) improved sound. On the other hand, I spent a lot of time collecting them b-sides! 2 examples of that for me are the old Bowie Ryko bonus tracks which replaced tons of rare vinyl, & the first Prince 3 cd best of which also replaced a lot of previously rare vinyl singles.

My music collection is nowhere near as large as most in our little "community." I'm a completist only when it comes to my very favorite artists. In most cases, I only buy music which I know I'll listen to over and over - avoiding what I consider to be spotty albums. And of course (like most of you) I prefer having my grubby paws on the physical product.

I don't yet own an iPod, but it's a great concept in principle. Obviously, you cannot take your CD collection along when you're traveling, and having it downloaded on a portable format comes in handy.

Interesting responses and all that I can readily identify with. I, too, am a completist, I think we all are. And I too like to have that favorite song right there at my fingertips anytime I want to hear it. What sometimes happens is maybe 2 years later I'm not into that song as much and that's when I'll unload it. I don't ever download music nor do I own an iPod. Hey, I'm on an iMac and I don't even use the iTunes. I remember when cds first came out that the worry was the size of the medium would detract from the artistic levels achieved by LP covers, sleeves and such, but I like to hold the physical cd in my hand, too. Lastly, Geff, I used to have a ton of unwatched DVD's too and I sold all but my top favorites. You get $5-$10 a pop for them on amazon and then you can turn around and use that to buy some music...:)

I collect CD's because radio doesn't satisfy my needs. A random hour of random music on radio may only feature two or three songs that I really like. By the same token, I don't watch TV news, but prefer to read newspapers instead. So I choose my playlist and I choose what news I want to read. I consider myself a music historian and custodian, it is my mission to keep the music of 1954-1980 alive - at least in my room!

You guys are a kindred spirit. This is why these pages are required reading for me. I too have a large LP, CD & 45 collection. Probably 2000 LP's, 1000 45's and 2500 CD's. There is a lot of crossover between the LP & CD titles. I'm in no hurry to sell the LP's as the amount of money I would get for them would hardly be worth the effort. Besides, I like them. If I find I need the money down the road, I'll revisit the concept.

My collecting used to be about the music, acquiring it as much as playing it. Right now, however, my collection is more about enjoying the discs I have, to the extent that many of them are now mementos. My tastes are eclectic, and my collecting pattern is to move from artist to artist, going back and listening to the discs that I have from a particular artist, and looking up any CD's that can fill any holes in my collection. I'm afraid I don't seek out a lot of new artists for my collection anymore...but I do initially listen to the CD's that I buy several times--the question is whether I will keep playing them after two or three weeks.

To paraphrase Courtney Love: "I want to be the one with the most cake."

It's a disease. I became infatuated with pop music at a young age. I always had more records than anyone I knew, and by the advent of CDs, the idea of owning every song that I remember hearing on the radio became a driving ambition. But it's even gone way beyond that. When I read about a super-deluxe reissue of a classic album, not buying it just isn't an option.

I really think that the day will come when the majors, at least, stop releasing CDs. So my plan is to buy as many as possible now--oh wait, I do that anyway.

If there's a cure for this, I don't want it...

Oh great. I get to follow Jimbo  . Basically, I want every song that I ever liked to be at my fingertips, and in better- than -download quality. However, once I attain that - I feel the need to own everything by each of those artists. Jimbo mentioned those "Deluxe Editions" - I eat 'em up as well. Looking forward to the upcoming Paul Weller "Wild Wood" Deluxe import!

My collection pales in comparison to some of the folks on this board, although it is way bigger than what most of my relatives, friends, etc. have. I never understood why someone would go to the trouble of buying a CD player and then years later, still only have 10 - 20 discs to play on it, but you would be surprised how often I've seen this.

For me, one of the nice things about having a decent-sized collection is the fun of pulling out an older CD, playing it for the first time in a few years and saying, "Wow, I had forgotten how great this was!"

I don't think I have anything to add -- not surprisingly, my motivations are pretty much the same as y'all's. (I can't believe I just said "y'all's." Darn you, Linda!) My current quest is to obtain every charted pop hit on CD, or in CD-quality digital format, from 1890 through 1999...which should keep me going for the rest of my life.

As for what will happen to my collection when I expire, I guess that'll be up to my kids. I can only hope they'll grow to appreciate its value, both in terms of the music and what it meant to me. If it were up to my wife, she'd put the whole thing up on eBay right after my funeral.

My teenage sister is currently in my will to get my collection. I think she'll appreciate much of it, but she's never taught herself how to handle the actual disc without scratching (I don't think she cares).

I found on ebay an autographed poster signed by Ray Davies for a concert that he had in San Francisco a few years ago. What made me have to have it is that it was signed "To Steve". It's being delivered today. $65

I want the best versions of my favorite music so I end up buying many titles over and over again (old and new versions). It is hard to get it right the first time.

I do draw the line at the $$ grabbing releases that serve no purpose whatsoever for me (new Dylan, Floyd sets are good examples).

Do I turn around and sell?? I will if and only if I get something in better condition or find a better sounding version. Mind you it is getting awfully tempting when I see what certain discs are going for these days on auction sites.

In 1970 I got a brand new copy of FRESH CREAM for my birthday. It was on the new all yellow ATCO lable. I then traded it to my best friends older sister for her copy because it was on the old brown and pink Atco label. It was beat up but still played. I NEEDED the orignal label. At the moment I knew I had a life long sickness.
