Welcome To The Minority

RELEASE DATE: August 10, 2007
CD Edition limited to 5000 non-numbered copies.

Soul Asylum’s classic A&M output reissued with previously unreleased live material on Welcome To The Minority – The A&M Years 1988-1991

With a title taken from the lyrics of the first song on 1988’s Hang Time, Welcome To The Minority – The A&M Years 1988-1991 features both of Soul Asylum’s A&M albums in their entirety with rare and remixed tracks plus live material – most of which has never been released. This three-CD set examines one of alt-rock’s seminal bands in the most important and creative period of their career.

Disc one of Welcome To The Minority features their first A&M release, Hang Time. Produced by music legends Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith, the Nuggets compilation) and Ed Stasium (the Ramones, Talking Heads), Hang Timefinds the group finally connecting the hard-rocking dots of their Twin/Tone releases. The power and freshness of the album belies its age and the band tears through singles like “Sometime To Return” and “Standing In The Doorway.” The first disc also features tracks from the Lost Angels soundtrack and Free To Be…A Family – a sequel to Marlo Thomas’ classic Free To Be…You & Me.

Disc two contains the band’s 1990 follow-up, And The Horse They Rode In On. This time, Keith Richards’ drummer and producer Steve Jordan is assisted by engineer Joe Blaney in the production department. The album shows serious growth and acoustic experimentation – foreshadowing the success they would have later with tracks like “Runaway Train” – and even features a cameo from Parliament/Funkadelic’s Bernie Worrell. The material is fresh and mature and shows why VH-1 Classic’s Eddie Trunk thinks Dave Pirner is “one the best singer-songwriters on the planet.” A fan favorite, the disc features a remix of the album’s “Something Out Of Nothing” as an added treat.

Disc three is a treasure trove for Soul Asylum fans – 14 songs recorded on their 1990 tour in Ann Arbor, MI and Chicago, IL. This live material (11 previously unreleased tracks) includes their takes on “I Put A Spell On You,” “The Tracks Of My Tears” and “To Sir, With Love” in addition to classics from the band’s early catalog like “Made To Be Broken” and “Closer To The Stars.” A document of their fantastic live shows, for the first time these performances see the light of day on this incredible package.

Welcome To The Minority – The A&M Years 1988-1991 is a revelatory look into a transitional period between Soul Asylum’s hardcore beginnings in Minneapolis and their ultimate mainstream success, housed in more of the award-winning packaging that Hip-O Select is known for. Daringly original, nearly 20 years after their original release, these recordings showcase every aspect of Soul Asylum – strong albums, fantastic songwriting and amazing power on stage. An essential addition to any rock & roll collection.

Has anyone picked this up yet? The third disc looks quite interesting, but I am reluctant to shell out forty bucks for non-remastered re-releases of Hang Time, and ATHTRIO. The least Hip-O could have done was include the three unreleased bonus tracks, "One Way Conversation", "Little House on the Edge", and "Village Idiot", from the promo picture disc CD of And the Horse They Rode In On.

Truthfully...I ordered this online because someone had it listed for $5.00!!! I haven't listed to it yet though. I was kind of on the fence about it and wouldn't have shelled out the full price. For $5.00 though...I wasn't going to pass it up.
