I wonder if there are any unreleased tracks to make up an expanded Folsom Prison?

Johnny Cash -- At San Quentin: Legacy Edition (Legacy/Columbia)

Two words that I like to see behind the name of any LP reissue are: Legacy Edition. And you’d be hard pressed to find a collection any more deserving of that honor than Johnny Cash's infamous At San Quentin (1969). Less than five months after the concert was held -- February 24, 1969 in San Quentin Prison -- the album climbed to the top of the charts and stayed there for a month.

Fast-forward to 2000 and an Expanded Edition is issued that ups the original running order to a stellar 18 songs. Still, in the vaults remained nearly a half-hour more from the concert -- including spots by the Statler Brothers and Carl Perkins. For the first time anywhere, the entire concert is being offered for those who dare to hear it. There are no overdubs and nothing has been sanitized. This is The Man In Black, live in front of several thousand inmates. Anything could have happened and -- if this three-disc set is any indication -- lots did.

The two audio CDs present every fret-pickin' note of the complete 90-plus minute set -- from Carl Perkins' hard-drivin' rockabilly licks on "Blue Suede Shoes" through to the full ensemble backing Cash on a reprised medley of "Folsom Prison Blues," "I Walk The Line," "Ring Of Fire" and a rousing rendition of "The Rebel -- Johnny Yuma." As anyone who has ever heard a note of these recordings will attest, there is a palpable edginess absorbed by the music as it chugs along. But what is probably most evident when listening to the entire show -- in proper context and sequence, the way it went down -- is the camaraderie and respect the inmates have for Cash. Almost, like a convict's prodigal son.

June Carter's razor-sharp wit is finely honed as she chides the prisoners to "sit back, relax and get yo' hands outta each others' pockets …" before launching the Carter Family into a spirited reading of Tom Paxton's folk standard "Last Thing On My Mind" and a high and lonesome take of their own trademark "Wildwood Flower." Of course at the core of the festivities is Johnny Cash. Whether it is the lack of drugs coursing through his veins, a recent religious revelation or simply being in good shape, Cash rides the audience's rowdy and often aggressive energy like a wild bronco.

His voice personifies both the prisoner and the angel in the listener during the newly-restored coupling of "Long Black Veil" and the prisoner-requested "Give My Love To Rose." Equally incendiary are the recently unearthed revisitations of "Orange Blossom Special," "Blistered," and joined by June for the audience suggested "Jackson". Also reinstated are the Statler Brothers' staples "Flowers On The Wall" and "Less Of Me," as well as the Carter Family's spot-on take of "Break My Mind," and Carl Perkins' own originals "Restless" and "The Outside Looking In."

The accompanying DVD contains the Johnny Cash In San Quentin documentary made at the concert by the British-based Granada-TV [aka ITV]. Interspersed are stark and, at times harrowing, interviews with the prisoners and guards. Actually, they don't have to say very much as their hollow eyes do most of the talking. Cash's on-stage persona is riveting to watch. The music is highlighted by footage of the aforementioned "Orange Blossom Special," with Cash showing off his multi-harmonica trickery. However, within moments he shifts from those lighthearted antics to the somber solitude of "San Quentin". He not only brings down the house in both extremes, but provides a context and insight that reiterates his artistic greatness.

Johnny Cash At San Quentin: Legacy Edition is a recommended -- if not required -- piece of musical Americana.

I agree, this does look enticing.

However, if I may digress, am I the only one who feels these days that expanding a classic can sometimes just mess it up? (The Who's Live At Leeds for example. The best version of that one out there, to me, is the original LP track listing. It was more concise, more powerful in it's original edit.) While it makes sense to reissue these live shows as such, you'd still need (or want) the original CD (or LP) no matter how poorly it might have been mastered in the first place. Too bad these new reissues couldn't take that into consideration somehow -- so one could toss out (sell on ebay) the old without losing anything in the new.

That's why usually if the remaster has a different track listing or is re-sequenced, I generally keep the original. While I like Cheap Trick's expanded two disc version of At Budokan, I still prefer the original single disc album because that's the one I grew up with. So I have both in my collection.

My copy arrived today from CD Universe as well as the new Neil Young. I was disappointed to see in a box set like this that one of my CDs had slipped out of the teeth and was running around loose in the packaging. I looked at the surface and I spotted a few scratches. So, I'm going to have to put this thing in the front of my rotation of things I need to listen to and watch amid the incredible pile of titles I need to still catch up on during the Fall and Winter and see if I've got any skips or not.

Steve Talia,
Even if your scratched CD plays fine now, it may oxidize in the future. CD's are only guaranteed to last a lifetime if they don't have deep scratches. Hair-fine, surface scratches should be OK, though, I've got some of those.

The critics went so crazy over the expanded Live at Leeds that I always thought I must be the only person on Earth who felt it was less powerful than the original. Glad to know I'm not alone! Having said that, though, I've always wanted to hear the San Quentin concert as it actually happened, and see the BBC documentary, so I'll have to put this one on my wish list.

Well, unfortunately, this still isn't the complete show. In fine print they tell you that there were a few other songs, but the tapes of those songs were incomplete, so I guess this is as complete as its going to be.

The dvd for me is a one time only viewing. I wanted badly to see it, but there is very little footage of the concert itself.....I think "Boy Named Sue" and "San Quentin" were the only complete performances shown. The rest is interviews with the prisoners. Its not bad, but probably something you would only watch once.

[bigred]Ultimate Gospel[/bigred]

Image

Gospel was what Johnny Cash, Luther Perkins, and Marshall Grant originally wanted to record when they auditioned for Sam Phillips in 1954. In 1958, Sun Records' refusal to let Cash record a gospel album--despite his track record of hits--led him to leave for Columbia. This well-chosen package delineates sacred music's ongoing role in Cash's career, beginning with two 1970 performances from his ABC variety show, one featuring longtime Cash friend Rev. Billy Graham. The 1957 Sun tunes include the searing "I Was There When It Happened" and Cash's original "Belshazzar." "He Turned the Water into Wine," "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," "That's Enough," and his 1969 gospel hit "Daddy Sang Bass," all from Columbia, are particularly passionate, as is "Far Side Banks of Jordan" (a duet with June Carter Cash) and three never-before-issued performances, 1974's "My Ship Will Sail" and "How Great Thou Art and "It Is No Secret" from 1981. Given that one can't truly understand Cash without knowing his gospel side, this is a fine introduction.

1. Here Was A Man (Live) 2:57
2. The Preacher Said, "Jesus Said" 3:40
3. I Was There When It Happened 2:16
4. Belshazzar 2:24 Album Only
5. That's Enough 2:42
6. It Was Jesus 2:05
7. The Old Account 2:23
8. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot 1:53
9. The Great Speckle Bird 2:08
10. He'll Understand And Say Well Done 2:27
11. How Great Thou Art 5:18
12. It Is No Secret (What God Can Do) 3:05
13. He Turned Water Into Wine 2:50
14. Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord) 3:55
15. Troublesome Waters 3:50
16. (There'll Be) Peace In The Valley (For Me) 2:50
17. When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder 2:05
18. In The Sweet By And By 2:47
19. My Ship Will Sail 2:47
20. Far Side Banks Of Jordan 2:41
21. Oh Come, Angel Band 2:44
22. Amazing Grace 2:28
23. Daddy Sang Bass 2:20
24. Children Go Where I Send Thee 2:42

I did exactly the same thing with both the Cheap Trick and Johnny Cash examples.

When a reissue comes out with bonus track tacked onto the end, I'll dump the old one immediately. But in these cases....I really have to hold onto the originals.

These albums have already been reissued by Sun, with the original album covers, as single cd entries. His entire Sun LP catalogue has been presented in this manner.

Three of the four bonus tracks were already released when the Sun's got the most recent remaster release on Varese Vintage. All seven had bonus tracks and were released in a nice box in 2002, that is now hard to find and very OOP.
Time Life put out a 3 disc box back in 2005 claiming its the complete Sun recordings but it ain't even close. But it has a nice booklet with good liners and photos. "Country Boy" is the only one not on those Varese releases. The original of it is on the Time Life Box.

[bigred]The Lowdown[/bigred]

Image

With one of the longest, most important and ultimately dignified careers in popular music to his name, Johnny Cash was everything that Rock n Roll promised but rarely delivered - ironically, a performer who was considered outside that genres often ridiculous parameters for so many years. [title]Johnny Cash - The Lowdown[/title] tells this great American's story from both sides of the coin, on a two CD set. Comprising a detailed audio- biography of Cashs always fascinating life, and a 60 minute interview disc with rare recordings of the Man In Black in discussion, at different times throughout his career, this package is all at once enlightening, informative and entertaining.

[bigred]Christmas With Johnny Cash[/bigred]

Image

A compilation of Christmas music recorded by Johnny Cash in the early 1960s, '70s, and '80s, [title]CHRISTMAS WITH...[/title] is a collection of homilies, carols, and hymns that reflect the singer's religious spirit and, particularly in "Christmas As I Knew It," his humble sharecropping upbringing. Though there's a little schmaltz, Cash's approach to the festive season is refreshingly non-materialistic, and his performance of familiar favorites, notably "Silent Night," is unaffected and moving.

Producers: Don Law, Frank Jones, Bill Walker, Larry Butler, Bob Jones
Compilation producer: Al Quaglieri

1. I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day
2. Christmas Guest, The
3. Hark, The Herald Angels Sing
4. Gifts They Gave, The
5. Blue Christmas
6. Merry Christmas Mary
7. Oh Come All Ye Faithful
8. Away In A Manger
9. Christmas Spirit, The
10. Joy To The World
11. Silent Night
12. Christmas As I Knew It - (previously unreleased, bonus track)
