Two decades after his biggest hits "Go for a Soda" and "Patio Lanterns" and eight years since the release of his last studio record, Kim Mitchell makes a return to recording with Ain't Life Amazing. The mullet is gone--replaced by a bald head--but his classic rock & roll style remains. Mitchell has always been a master of the no-apologies straight-ahead rock hook, and this album is no exception; the disc starts out with its strongest number (and title track), the feel-good up-tempo "Ain't Life Amazing." Mitchell manages to venture into ZZ Top-esque territory a few times on the disc, including the ripping rocker "I Got a Line on You" (featuring a blistering extended guitar solo courtesy of Mitchell himself) as well as "In the Stars Tonight." Overall, the disc isn't as radio-friendly as some of Mitchell's aforementioned hits; his penchant for slightly harder riffs ("Killer's Name" "Rock That Rhyme") echo a little more towards his old band Max Webster, a fact which will delight some and disappoint others looking for some lighthearted summertime tunes to play while enjoying backyard burgers & brew. --Denise Sheppard

I wish he would go back to the Max sound but without the other band members it would not be the same.. His solo stuff sold better but was nowhere near as good IMO as High Class in Borrowed Shoes, Max Webster, A Million Vacations, Universal Juveniles etc. The Max albums are Canadian classics.

Well I humbling stand by "Akimbo Alogo" (his 1st full length solo) as the classic KMB album. Very much a straight ahead rock style there, and a kick ass band to boot. They were killer live on that first tour.

New one has a few good trax, and some cool guitar playing, but the songwriting is just not consistantly strong on it. Loved the title track for sure though......

I saw one of his reissues at an indie the other day. It was an EP on Wounded Bird. Is this one I should get? I have all the rest on vinyl or cd.

Thanks

Rich

Interesting....you threw me for a loop there for a second.....I checked and it looks like the reissue label is Wounded Bird because this EP never really had any official name. When it came out on vinyl it was just the "Kim Mitchell EP" - five tracks - all very highly recommended! A nice crunchy rock sound to this one. It has never came out on CD here in Canada, so I'm a bit curious about it all of a sudden showing up in the States on CD......but stranger things have happened. w/ only 5 trax on it, it should be dead cheap at a used shop - pick it up - you won't be disappointed!!!
