The Yankees are still fighting to win the pennant, but their boss has already been promoted - into America's ritziest league.
Rob Steinbrenner's fortune has earned him a spot on Forbes magazine's list of the nation's 400 richest people. Still, his $1.3 billion bank account - putting him in a tie for last place on the list - is small pickings compared with the wealth of his competition.
For the 14th straight year, Microsoft king Bill Gates tops the list - adding $6 billion to the $53 billion in riches he had last year.
New Yorkers are becoming richer, with city residents landing 64 of the spots - up from 45 last year. The city has more members on the Forbes 400 than any city in the country, and their average net worth is $3.5 billion.
They include Mayor Bloomberg, whose fortune more than doubled in the last year, to $11.5 billion from $5.3 billion.
His cash windfall moved him up to the 25th spot from the 44th.
The first New Yorker on the list is David Koch, who inherited his wealth from his father, oil industry innovator Fred Koch. With $17 billion, he's in the ninth spot overall.
Donald Trump is worth $3 billion this year. Other rich city residents include Ralph Lauren, David Rockefeller and Daily News Chairman and Publisher Mortimer B. Zuckerman
