So do I. While the 1990s gave us great stuff like Bone, Sandman and Preacher, titles sure to withstand the test of time, the sheer volume of quality titles now seems greater than during the dank days of the 1990s. I left comics in the early 1990s and came back to discover I hadn't really missed much when it came to mainstream books.

What Taft said. And for what it's worth, I'm reading more titles now than I was then.

The 1990s. The 2000s made me give up reading comics.
The 90's had better general plots, ideas, and characters, while the 2000's had better production techniques and coloring.

the 90s almost made me quit comics..Marvel, DC and Image were churning out CRAP...Vertigo and Dark Horse saved me as a fan in the 90s: Grendel, Next Men, DU, Sin City, 300, Preacher, Hellblazer, Sandman, etc were great but the bulk from the big 3 were garbage...
Comics today win by a mile for me...so many great books out today: Criminal, Fell, Green Arrow Yr1, Cap, DD, Iron Fist, Punisher, Black Summer, etc..

2000s. I buy way more than I ever did in the 90s.
I'm a Marvel guy, so I can only speak about that company, but I think my love for the medium turned around when Joe Quesada came on board as EIC.
Prior to him, it seemed every Marvel title was in it's own universe for a while. Nowadays, everything seems a bit more connected and congruent.
I love it!

The 90s, I guess, because I buy a fraction of titles now compared to what I was buying then.

Good question...I am going to have to vote 90s because that's my "Golden Era"; i.e. when I discovered comics.
Gruenwald on Captain America 4-LIFE!!!
And that wasn't meant to be a joke about Gruenwand being dead. Or Cap being dead, either.

The now. I wasn't reading comics in the 90's, and they don't look good to me now.

I'm not sure, really. I voted for 2000's, but upon further reflection, Madman, Sin City, Preacher, Hellboy...I dunno. i think I might have voted wrong.

The 90s are when I got back into comics, and I was buying all kinds of different things, far more than today. Now, I'm buying trades of 60s and 70s stuff more than I'm buying current books. Still, things like Fables, Y the Last Man, early Superman/Batman by Loeb, Brave and the Bold, etc, etc, there's a lot to like out there today. I'm not voting. I think nostalgia makes me lean 90s when that's not really correct. Liefeld came out of the 90s. That alone should disqualify the decade, and we have the Clone Saga on top of that!

Can I just say, that when ever I say "comics" or read "comics" in any question, my default definition is "Marvel and DC superhero comics."

For me, it's the opposite of that, more and more as the years go by.

I have more "favorite" comics now than I did in the 90s. To me, the best of the 90s showed how good comics could be, and now we're seeing the fruits of that.

I guess the 90s.
Hard to say. I enjoyed 1990-1996 (yes I know) far more than now. and 1996ish to 1998 or 1999 less.

You all are missing out on a lot of great stuff outside of superhero books. It's mind-boggling how much choice we have today and how much that stuff is ignored because it's not spandex.

I left comics with my kid's birth in 89. I bopped into shops and always stopped to browse the supermarket and drugstore stashes, but nothing... nothing made me want to return to comics.
Then in the late 90's I discovered Alex Ross. Then Kingdom Come, Astro City, Moore's ABC books... compared to the McFarlan influenced 90's, this stuff was gold.
But even with these fantastic 90's series... we have equally fantastic series in this decade, PLUS it seems that DC and Marvel have stepped it up. Even with the Secret Civil Infinity Countdowns, I think they're putting out much better books than in the previous decade.
I have to go with the 2000's.

I didn't mean I won't or don't read non-superhero. I meant that I still reflexively think "Marvel or DC superhero" whenever there's a discussion about the state of comics, the decline of comics, comparisons of comics, etc. I have to be reminded -- it's as if the word comics itself defaults to the mainstream superhero stuff for me.

Nah, I don't ignore it Steve, I just don't have any interest in it. I've sampled things here and there. When it grabs me, I pick it up (for instance Y, Fables - the latter strictly in trades from the library, but still I read it).

What Twitch said.
The 90's sucked the dead, rotting ass out of a plague-ridden ox as far as comics on the whole were concerned. Yes, we had SANDMAN and PREACHER and STARMAN and a few other gems, but they were the exception, not the rule.
Oh, and fuck Image. A lot. In the ass.
Sans lube.
