I was actually going through a quick run-through over at Pause and Play checking out to see if there was a release date change for the upcoming Elton John: 60 when I came across something which I can't recall has been mentioned here or not. Reelin' In The Years/Stax/Concord is releasing a DVD of Various Artists called Stax/Volt Review-Live In Norway 1967. It features the sets from Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T. & the MGs, Arthur Conely, Eddie Floyd and the Mar-Keys. Extra footage was found. There are also extras with commentary on the show. We'll be able to see much more than what we saw on the Stax special which ran on PBS a little while back. I'm definitely picking this up.

Stax/Volt Revue - Live in Norway 1967 marks the first-ever official release of this historic concert. Considered by soul music fans to be one of the greatest lineups of artists ever to grace the concert stage, this DVD features stunning performances by Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Eddie Floyd, Arthur Conley, The Mar-Keys and the legendary Booker T. & The MGs.

This DVD captures the April 7, 1967 concert in Oslo, Norway near the end of the three-week tour, when all the artists were at their very peak.

The 75-minute concert was restored from the original master tapes and includes 20 minutes of recently discovered performances lost in the vaults for 40 years.

I have a poorly recorded grainy DVD bootleg copy of this. It's still brilliant! I can't wait to see and hear the cleaned up footage and sound.

But how did they ever find their way to Norway in 1967? Just curious about that.

Hey Jimbo,
As long as they didn't say "I knew we should have taken a left turn (toin) at Albequerque". LOL!
The European audiences really took a great appreciation for that tour. It was the usual thing with them at the time. They always appreciated Soul, Blues, R & B, Jazz and any kind of U.S. roots artists more than we did with what was in our own backyard.

The same was true for American country artists. England and Germany were big audiences for 60's artists Skeeter Davis and Connie Smith, even into the 1980's. They had releases unique to those countries, such as different compilations with different covers.

It's is if our music is qucikly forgotten here, but valued elsewhere.

Natalie Merchant did a fairly big concert in the Detroit area several years ago. For an encore, she chose to do the Supremes "Back in my Arms Again". Hardly anyone in the audience knew the song! Afterwards Natalie said how the lack of audience response shocked and disappointed her. It's disconcerting, no?
