hmm I don't have that one I should get it sometime. Unfortunately I have had bad luck with buying their music. I got a couple of compilations. One seemed to have good songs, but they picked the worst versions of all of the songs! The other was okay but it had a lot of their really early work. Generally I like that but with them they...weren't great in their first year or so. I still love alot of their early work just not as early as that.

Sounds like you prefer the '70s Kinks, which was probably the most successful part of their career in North America. There are two compilations:

This covers from 1971-76:

This one covers 1977 through 1986:

The above links are to Amazon Canada so Ian has no excuse not to buy these for you as presents. ;) :ohyes: Check the audio samples and see if those are the Kinks eras you prefer.

Victoria,

Would you please elaborate on this point? Which compilations are you referring to and what songs have you encountered that are inferior versions? Other than live recordings, I've never encountered any alternate versions of any of their songs.

Thanks for the research. :)

I like the 60'e Kinks too. Actually I might even prefer them a bit, just not the very early stuff. Them and The Who had the same producer at first. The Who broke from him more quickly I believe. He got them both singing the same song that he wrote; It sucked. The Who's version was slightly better I think, the song just matched their style a bit more.

I think once they got a different producer they were fine. The compilation I was speaking of is not there. I got it from a used CD store. I will pick up more some day I'm just cheap. I do have old tapes of theirs that I love.

Off the top of my head I like Autumn Almanac, Well Respected Man,You Really Got me Girl,Lola and there's this song that was written about Noel Coward that I can't find the name of. There are lots more but I haven't heard them in awhile, because my tape player doesn't work very well.

I picked up "The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society" awhile ago, inspired by the really cool HP ad with the guy singing along to "Picture Book."

That's a really awesome album. And I just found a cool Matthew Sweet cover of "Big Sky" which was on that album, too.

Sorry I must have been posting my response when you were posting.I missed this the first time. I'm not sure where that Kinks CD is and will have to go look for it. I was exaggerating a bit, but I know that the version of Come Dancing on that album sounded quite out of tune...it could have been live. It's been 4 or 5 years sine I listened to it.

Great album, Hank. Did you get the 3-disc version?

Now that you've said that, I seem to recall once hearing a recording of that song that seemed off-key. I'll have to dig through my Kinks collection and see if I find it.

No, the Reprise single-disc one. It was $8. I'm rapidly becoming anti-bonus track.
