The Killers to release new records this year

The Killers are releasing a new album this year frontman Brandon Flowers has told NME.COM.

Despite having said goodbye to the UK with headlining shows at the V Festival last weekend (August 19,19) with plans to finishing touring and begin work on their third album, frontman Flowers told us backstage at the festival that his band plan to squeeze in one more record this year.

"We're going to release a b-sides album in November, that's a new thing to talk about," he explained. "There are some good songs that we've released and so it will be good to have the out there for people."

The singer wasn't sure of the exact tracklisting for the album yet, but the band have build up a host of extra songs during their two albums with the likes of 'Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town' which backed 'Andy You're A Star' and 'All These Things That I've Done' b-side 'Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself' are in consideration for the record.

Flowers confirmed that the album will include some of the remixes that the band have had done of their songs, but joked "only the good ones".

The singer confirmed that the album will include some of the remixes that the band have had done of their songs, but joked "only the good ones", singling out the Jacques Lu Cont's Thin White Duke Mix of 'Mr Brightside' in particular for its influence on the band's songwriting.

"We actually started changing things around [when recording 'Sam's Town'] because of a remix of 'Mr Brightside' done by the Thin White Duke. We never thought to do this, which is ridiculous but now we're learning, but he took off all the chords, changed them and just kept my vocal melody going through the song," explained Flowers. "It gave you a whole new emotion to 'Mr Bightside' and it was beautiful. That made us look at the way we write things differently."

Although the band are only two albums in, The Killers frontman said he didn't think a b-sides release was too soon.

"We've just got a lot of good songs, so we're just slowly going to grind everyone down until they admit we can do pop better than anyone else," said the singer, he added that the collection is also likely to feature new material for the band. "I think we're going to do some new songs to go on there."

Flowers added that the band had already recorded another Christmas single for AIDs charity RED following last year's 'A Great Big Sled'.

"It's called 'Don't Shoot Me Santa'," explained Flowers. "I really liked doing one last year, so we've done another. Maybe we could do one every year and in ten years' time we'll have an album of them."

I stopped trying to chase down all of their b-sides, when bands like this started releasing their new singles as three-parters (one CD-single and two 7" vinyl singles, for example, all with a diffrerent b-side), or the equally hideous practice of exclusive songs for various foreign markets (can anyone say Ryan Adams?) !!

I still use and love my turntable as much as anybody, but enough is enough sometimes.

This is ridiculous. They have 2 albums, right?

By the way, I'll be releasing my debut album "Steve In Louisville's B-Sides" next week. Why wait until my second album to compile the songs when I can just throw some together now?

If they donate the proceeds to a worthy charity, I can excuse this move. Outside of that, it looks like somebody is trying to capitalize on their 15 minutes.

>> Exclusive: The Killers team up with Lou Reed on new track

The Killers have recruited Lou Reed to sing on a track set to appear on the Las Vegas band's forthcoming B-sides and rarities album.

Frontman Brandon Flowers exclusively told NME.COM that they've been hard at work in a New York studio this week recording 'Tranquilize' with 'Sam's Town' producers Flood and Alan Moulder.

"We were thrilled with being able to work with Lou Reed," Flowers said of the former Velvet Underground singer and rock elder statesman.

"The song was calling for a duet and his voice was just right. The sentiment of the song is very him," Flowers said.

Describing 'Tranquilize' as a "rollercoaster", he added, "There's a desperation to it. It's one of our more depressing songs, but there's always a light at the end of the tunnel."

Flowers explained that although the song will be part of a B-sides compilation, he believes it's one of the band's strongest tracks. "It's a song that really should've been on 'Sam's Town'," he said.

The compilation is due out before the end of the year, and will feature material that may be new to many US listeners. "A lot of our American fans may not even know about these songs because they're B-sides to singles in England," he said.

Flowers explained that the idea for the compilation was inspired by two of his favourite bands that did something similar.

"I'm a big fan of 'The Masterplan' by Oasis and 'Hatful Of Hollow' by The Smiths. It's for our fans who want the whole collection in one package." <<

NME has reviewed the track "Tranquilize" on which The Killers collaborated with Lou Reed:

>> From it's opening chords, its clear that this is a swaggering, twisting epic that subtly moves on from everything that made ‘Sam’s Town’ and makes it even grander.

Packing in everything that makes an 'event' song (a string section, a children’s choir and an end of track tempo change) there's more than a passing nod to My Chemical Romance's 'Welcome To The Black Parade’.

“Was it love or was it just easy?” Lou sings in semi - sleazy style as the pomp of the music recalls the likes of Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper and Reed’s own ‘Berlin’.

With its classic rock stylings and no-nonsense production it feels like a potential Number One. <<

That's the same timeline in which Nirvana put out Incesticide. Guess that turned out to be an astute move...

That was to appease a Sub Pop contract obligation. I don't think that is the case here...

Missing part of The Killers' 'murder trilogy' appears online

A rare song by The Killers, 'Leave The Bourbon On The Shelf', has appeared online as a live video recording. You can hear the song now by clicking on the video below.

The band played the track live, for what is believed to be the first time since they signed a record deal, on their recent US tour.

The song has so far not been released, but is due to appear on the band's forthcoming B-sides and rarities compilation, 'Sawdust', which is released in November.

The track is the first song in what the band have described as a "murder trilogy".

Played together with 'Midnight Show' and 'Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine' - two tracks from the band's debut 'Hot Fuss' - the three songs tell the fictional story of a woman being murdered by her jealous boyfriend.

Jaunty and bass-driven, the track features a typically dramatic vocal performance from frontman Brandon Flowers.

Hear a live version of the track posted up on October 14, by clicking on the video below.

Here's the video for "Tranquilize" from the Sawdust album. (This is a Windows Media video, it's not at YouTube yet.)

Also, Amazon has dropped the pre-order price for the album to $9.99:

I loved "Great Big Sled", and I like the new "Don't Shoot Me Santa". I'm a sucker for the Killers. I think the odds & ends "Sawdust" is better than most "proper" albums.
