Mine was a 1983 Mustang, blue, somewhat beaten up but certainly not a junker. NOT a real Mustang; it was a 6 cyl. Still, it was mine, damnit.
I sold my childhood comic collection to get it. Had a lot of fun in that car. I don't recall why I got rid of it; I think it died. I'll have to see if I have some pics.
What was your first car?

1986 Mitsibishi Galant.
Problem was, I owned it in 1995!

86 Mustang LX White
Again not a real mustang as Taft states above
Eventually the turn signal broke off, so I tried rubber banding it back on, when that didn't work anymore I used the nub.
The brakes went for a while, so I got used to stopping with an emergency brake.
And my favorite, if I took my foot off the gas, it would stall. I got really good at turns. Throw the car in Nuetral restart the engine, accelerate out of the turn.
When I finally traded it in, I got $100, which they told me was being genrous
BTW if I ever catch my kids, driving with such a dangerous conditions, I'd kill em myself (or at least take their driving privileges away)

1984 Subaru Standard hatchback. TOTAL junker. It ran OK, but my brother was hot-wiring it when he sold it to me for $50, because he'd broken the steering lock/ignition switch when he lost his keys once. We wired it up with a toggle switch and a push-button, so I had to lock my doors no matter what. I drove it from '95-'97, when I replaced it with a pretty nice '89 Justy that I still miss, 'cause it got 40mpg.

I had that with two vehicles. If I was stopped at a light, I had to push on the brake and gas at the same time.
That was the 86 Galant, for a time, and the 87 Mistibishi Tredia which i got in 1998. That last a very expensive year
I was so happy to get a 1990 Toyota Tercel in 1999! A 90s car! It smoked terribly due to oil leaks though. I had to put a quart in a week.
Since then, it's been all new. 2004 Chevy Cavalier, and 2007 Chevy Impala.

The first car I ever bought, was bought for my new family, a 1996 Isuzu Rodeo SUV.
The first car I ever bought for myself (and still driving, BTW) is a 2001 Ford F-150 Extended cab.
I love my truck.

Same here with an Impala I had. Used the same method as you and Rob when it came to stop lights. The fact that the gas pedal stuck made matters worse. I once had to drop it into Park at 35-40 mph because I was heading a red light with heavy traffic and the gas was stuck.
Shortly before that car finally up and died, the carburetor was messed up, so a friend jury rigged it on with cotter pins. I drove it to Buffalo, NY from New Jersey. At one point, it came a tad loose and caught fire. There I was, dead of winter, on the side of the New York Expressway or whatever the hell it was throwing snow on my engine to douse the flames. Set for a bit, let it cool down, made sure it was snug again, and kept driving.
Amazing I wasn't killed in that car.

Wow, Scott, you had your first car for nine years? That's awesome. Must have been heartbreaking to junk it. I think the longest I've owned a car is .... now that I think about it, my current car recently passed my last one. I think I've had it for five or six years now. Only 80,000 miles in that time, so yay!

1980 AMC Spirit. I'd never seen or heard of one before I got it. I also had to do the brake/gas thing at stop lights, at one point. I was in Bo Duke mode one day, so I jumped some railroad tracks that were on a hill. The oil light came on immediately, as I had cracked the oil pan when I landed. Fortunately, I was only a couple of miles from home. Dumbass.

Yeah I serviced it regularly and never had any major engine problems. A crippling blow came during a 1986 comic convention I was running. Steve Englehart wanted to be driven to the Mexican border to go shopping. I was tied up at the show so I had a friend use my car. The friend drove the left fender into the hotel garage wall (it was one of those spiral ramps). He and his father got it repaired cheap and it had an ugly flat red primer fender. Within two years I was hit from behind and that was that.
Think of all the stuff you did in cars between the age of 16 and 25. I did it all, too, but with one car with a V-8 engine. Lots of fun stuff. Lots of stupid stuff, too. We survived it all for nine years! Then I had to let it go. It still ran okay, but it made no sense to spend more money fixing it than the insurance company paid me. I had a long talk with it at the junkyard before I got out and walked away forever.

AMC had some serious 240ZX envy.

A blue 1969 Chevelle. Got it in 1988. Thing was a tank and got 15 miles to the gallon! Then one by one I had to replace most of the systems. When the first Gulf War started and drove up gas prices I yelled "Uncle" and got a nifty 1983 Honda Accord, two-door hatchback.

Har! My wife loathes driving my truck. She likes riding in it, though. I have a hell of a time trying to get her to take it anywhere.
She likes small sporty cars.

1979 Chevy Malibu Classic, still in good shape when I bought it from my grandparents in 1988. It was stolen less than a month after I got it, from outside my work at the time. Hot-wired then gutted and stripped, found on the side of the road somewhere near Louisville, KY. No theft insurance.

There is something about cars when you're 16-22 that is almost impossible to recapture. They are so much a part of that first major taste of freedom you have that the cars are woven into your memories of that time just as much as the actual events you lived through. When you remember Incident X, it's attached to Car B.
The cars had personalities. Names. All my friends first cars, I remember them all. Big Blue. The Mustard. The Chrysler. The Dart. The Vista. Mention any one of the cars now and we'd all burst out with familiar stories brought to mind from the car alone.
Cars. Yeh, c'mon. Bizness.

1972 Chrysler New Yorker handed down from my brother, who had it handed down to him from my dad. Enormous car.
That didn't last long, so I got a 71 Datsun 510 that ran like a top.
