Cowboy Junkies-Whites Off Earth Now-MOFI Dec. 6th Release

This has just been announced over at the message board area of the official Cowboy Junkies site. Since I'm a huge fan of the band, I couldn't be more pleased with this news. :yay:
P.S.-Linda? When you get a chance, could you PM me the directions to how I can use the emoticons when it's not a new thread? On my other posts, I've been wanting to use them. I feel sheepish for bringing this up.

Songwritng styles vary from the Memphis/Elvis/Graceland mythic imagery of the hit single to the seemingly Springsteen inspired writing of "Silver Thunderbird".

In 1992 Marc Cohn won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist
In 1993 Marc Cohn won an achievement award from VH1.

Noooooo, mini LP sleeves are good, Jay! That's the good kind of cardboard. :) You know, like there's bad cholesterol and good cholesterol ...

Mini LP sleeves and digipaks are just variants of the same thing IMHO.
And both are evil.

That's why, despite being a MoFi fan, I am boycotting any releases packaged this way.
There are a couple of threads about this on the Hoffman Forum and the sentiment is definitely against it.

i don't care how you configure it, mini-lp, glued in plastic tray, foam knobs, etc etc etc. paper will wear out eventually, and jewel boxes will not.

Never have been able to understand why vinyl lovers wouldn't adore the mini LP sleeve replicas. The classic style. It's simple as pie to store the discs in separate jewel cases for protection but you get the aesthetically pleasing vinyl-y look from the package. And in miniature, which is even cuter. :) I wish that all discs were issued this way rather than having to import them at high prices from Japan. They give me warm fuzzies.

Thanks for reminding people of this one, Linda. I dearly love this band. I just hope KOCH/MoFi will get a chance to do the same for the rest of the RCA/BMG section of their career as well. Actually, I'd like to see their entire catalog done in surround.

Long time ICE subscriber, occasional lurker, first time poster...

I just ordered a copy of the SACD from Maple Music, but I ordered At The End of Paths Taken at the same time, so I won't get them until next month.

I'm curious - how exactly did they create a 5.1 surround mix for Whites Off Earth Now!!, since the original recording was two tracks only? Any ideas?

[bigred]The Pixies - Surfer Rosa (Hybrid SACD Stereo)[/bigred]
[lilred]May 22, 2007[/lilred]

Image

New Numbered Limited Edition Mini LP Style Packaging!

Originally titled "Gigantic", this 1988 release was the Boston quartet's first full-length recording. It established the Pixies almost instantly as an exciting and essential band on the national indie scene and a distinct place in the history of Punk. Producer/Engineer Steve Albini created both a compulsive and hypnotic 'in your face' rush in the economy of each song, while still retaining the band's cryptic quirkiness. The late Kurt Cobain frequently cited Surfer Rosa as one of his major musical influences.

Surfer Rosa has been re-mastered by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab from recently discovered, first-generation analog original master tapes.

1. Bone Machine
2. Break My Body
3. Something Against You
4. Broken Face
5. Gigantic
6. River Euphrates
7. Where Is My Mind?
8. Cactus
9. Tony's Theme
10. Oh My Golly!
11. Vamos
12. I'm Amazed
13. Brick Is Red

[bigred]Linda Ronstadt - Don't Cry Now[/bigred]
[lilred]July 17, 2007[/lilred]

Image

After her breakthrough on Capitol Records with The Stone Poneys ("Different Drum") plus some acclaimed solo releases, Linda Ronstadt jumped to David Geffen’s bourgeoning Asylum roster, joining The Eagles and Jackson Browne to form the genesis of the "California Country-Rock" sound.

Don’t Cry Now, her first for Asylum was released in 1973 and would help solidify Ronstadt as one of the premiere female pop vocalists for the next two decades. This is one of the most exceptional sounding female vocalist recordings of the 1970's.

Various tracks were produced by John Boylan, J.D. Souther; and, for the first time in what would be a long and highly successful relationship, British musician (Peter & Gordon) Peter Asher. The album spent more than a year on the Billboard chart and peaked at No. 45. Featured hit singles are the Eagles' "Desperado," Bonnie Raitt’s "Love Has No Pride," Randy Newman’s sly observation on slavery and southern culture "Sail Away" plus a nod to both Dusty Springfield and the Grand Ole Opry with "Silver Threads and Golden Needles."

Guest appereances include guitar work by both the Eagles’ Glenn Frey and super-sessionman Larry Carlton, plus harmonica by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Jimmy Fadden, bass and drums by L.A."A-teamers" Lee Sklar and Russ Kunkel respectively, plus last but certainly not least, the legendary Sneaky Pete adding his tasteful pedal steel throughout.

1. I Can Almost See It
2. Love Has No Pride
3. Silver Threads & Golden Needles
4. Desperado
5. Don't Cry Now
6. Sail Away
7. Colorado
8. Fast One
9. Everybody Loves A Winner
10. I Believe In You

Will it come in the same crappy cardboard packaging as the Cowboy Junkies disc?

If so I'll pass :(

My favorite band and one of their absolute finest masterpieces are getting the ultimate treatment it seems. Can anyone tell me just how good the quality is on these things and is it worth the price? I worship this album! Also, I'm not clear if this a US release because at the end it mentions a Japanese release as well. Maybe they're two seperate things I don't know.

From Blabbermouth.net:

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab is slated to release a 24 KT Gold Ultradisc II version of the 1980 RUSH classic "Permanent Waves". The disc will be priced at $24.99 and is tentatively set for release this November. Details on the album are as follows:

"By 1980, RUSH was experiencing the mid-point of what would be their golden period of recording (1976-1982). Released in January that year, 'Permanent Waves' was a transitional exercise that moved them further from the 'prog-rock' lump-labeling and pointed the way for their next masterpiece the following year, 'Moving Pictures'.

"Peaking at Number 4 on the Billboard's album chart, 'Permanent Waves' spawned such perennial concert staples as 'Freewill' and 'Spirit Of Radio'. Well-beyond the power-trio of old, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart each contributed equally, with multiple instrumentation and arranging approaches. With Terry Brown again producing, on board from their 1974 debut through 1982's 'Signals', each new album was a leap forward in mixing and production values, helping elevate the group to the upper echelons of rockdom. The combination of songwriting, arranging and production indeed renders it an undisputed rock classic."

The numbered limited edition Japanese mini-sleeve gatefold packaging (24 Karat Gold - Ultradisc II) features the following tracks:

01. The Spirit Of Radio
02. Freewill
03. Jacob's Ladder
04. Entre Nous
05. Different Strings
06. Natural Science

MFSL has been relasing their titles in cardboard mini-LP covers, not the lift lock jewel boxes they were known for. Japanese labels have done this for years. It is a domestic release and we should see it this November.

Other than their noise-reduced John Lennon releases, anyone know how good the sound quality of Mobile Fidelity's recent output has been?

The next two Mo-Fi releases are Ultradisc II 24-Karat Gold remastered CDs, and are due out on August 28, 2007:

[bigred]The Allman Brothers - Idlewild South[/bigred]

Image

Idlewild South, the sophomore release from America's sovereign Southern rock band the Allman Brothers, is easily their greatest studio album. Unlike the band's labyrinthine live shows, which are distinguished by their immense, walloping swamp rock, this album focuses on the considerable songwriting capabilities of Gregg Allman and Dicky Betts. Plus, it showcases the band’s original lineup, before multiple tragedies began taking their toll: The lightning slide guitar of Duane Allman, the vocals and Hammond B-3 of his brother Greg Allman, lead guitarist Dickey Betts, bassist Berry Oakley, and the thunderous drum tandem of Butch Trucks and Jaimoe Johanson. This album lays bare their talent for weaving disparate but distinctly Southern elements of rock, gospel, soul, jazz, and R&B into a cohesive and original whole. The renowned producer Tom Dowd oversaw these sessions, which resulted in the Bible-thumping "Revival," the smash hit "Midnight Rider," the dirty blues of "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'," the soul-soothing "Please Call Home," and the legendary "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," which would go on to become the penultimate Allman Brothers' concert war-horse.

1. Revival
2. Don't Keep Me Wonderin'
3. Midnight Rider
4. In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed
5. Hoochie Coochie Man
6. Please Call Home
7. Leave My Blues At Home

[bigred]Little Feat - Self Titled[/bigred]

Image

Description:
Little Feat was discovered and signed to the Warner Brothers label by legendary producer Russ Titelman. The band’s 1971 self-titled debut instantly established Little Feat as a fresh slice of musical Americana.

This eclectic group of talent formed for barely a year; were steeped in their love of rock, r&b, blues and country with just a pinch of New Orleans spice. After honing their unique blend in clubs and on the road, they were able to capture the magic of their live shows in the studio. The resulting release, tastefully assisted by guests Ry Cooder on bottleneck slide and Sneaky Pete’s pedal steel, was one of the most unpretentious and timeless recording debuts since Music From Big Pink.

Fortified with some very strong songwriting from both lead guitarist Lowell George and keyboardist Bill Payne, such future Feat classics as "Willing’", "Truck Stop Girl", "Snakes on Everything" and "Crazy Captain Gunboat Willie", plus a medley tribute to the Howlin' Wolf, help rank Little Feat along side Sailin’ Shoes, Dixie Chicken and Waiting for Columbus as one of their greatest albums.

Features:
New liner notes by legendary producer Russ Titelman. (Mofi exclusive)
Numbered Limited Edition “Japanese Mini Sleeve” gatefold packaging

Tracks:
Snakes on Everything
Strawberry Flats
Truck Stop Girl
Brides of Jesus
Willin’
Hamburger Midnight
Forty Four Blues/How Many More years
Crack in Your Door
I’ve been the One
Takin’ My Time
Crazy Captain Gunboat Willie

The Idlewild is out now (received it last week from Music Direct) and it is a winner - great sound and I do not mind the mini-lp packaging at all. Little Feat and Rush Permanent Waves are next - bring 'em on MFSL!!!

Idlewild South is a great CD which I have but........... the disappointing thing with this re-issue is the lack of any bonus material. The total time for Idlewild South is around 35 minutes.

From what I know Polygram hold a huge amount of out-takes and concerts from Capricorn records archives.
