That's some line-up of talent! Good to see that Johnny gave screen time to country artists and rockers both!

I want the whole show released on DVD. Surely there is enough demand, in this day and age of TV on DVD overkill? On the chance that it is coming, I will skip buying this. :)

Seeing Derek & the Dominos is the big clincher for me (as if I needed one when it comes to Johnny).

Below, I have listed who the performers are, not on the new one, from my 6 disc boot of the show. I will not list the fourteen artists on the official set.

So Jeff, you might want to get this as they will probably keep releasing sets like this (as mini comps) and not entire shows; as a lot of us want.

The boot box I have has entire shows on it. Very cool. Even though it is a copy from a Japanese VHS set.(No subs, straight release there in American)

Some of these people I have never heard of and some are either actors or "general performers" doing comedy or sketch routines with Johnny And the obvious ones are singing solo or with JC:

Eddie Albert
Joe Tex
Jeannie C. Riley
Glen Campbell
Massey Williams
Ramblin' Jack Elliot
Cass Elliot
Tommy Cash
The Staple Singers
Bobby Martin
Bill Harris
Ed Ames
The Monkees
Fannie Flag
Lulu
Charlie Callas
Roger Miller
Odetta
Roy Akem
Tex Ritter
Hank Snow
Lynn Anderson
David Houston
Gordon Lightfoot
Minnie Pearl
BJ Thomas
The Ringling Brothers Circus Performers

I definitely won't be trading this in, EVER!
Hope this list helps someone; even just to know what is still out there and needs an official release

Rich

I wonder if they really will eventually release the whole series or if there were any licensing/rights problems involved with the others. BTW, was the version of The Monkees who appeared on Johnny's show the one which only had Mickey & Davey with Boyce & Hart? Too bad Mike Nesmith never appeared on his show. The stuff he was doing back then as a solo artist would have fit quite nicely.

I can't remember off the top, so I will check it out Monday and let you know.

I think Peter had left the Monkees by the time they appeared on the show, so it's probably just Davey, Mickey, and Mike.

I remember seeing Mickey & Davey with Boyce & Hart on some shows, but I think that came later.

I would still like to see Rich's answer to be sure.

So The Monkees appearance might be from right around the time of Instant Replay? It was after that album that Nez split, correct?

Steve,

I think The Monkees appearance is from around that time after Peter quit and before Michael quit.

AMG lists "The Monkees Present" after "Instant Replay", both in 1969. I believe those are the only two releases with the Davy, Micky, and Michael trio. Was "Present" released after Michael quit even though he is on it? Maybe someone else that knows can pipe in. I had quit listening to the Monkees by that time. I'm one of those people that dismissed the band as I got older, and then years later realized they actually did release some great music.

Back to Johnny Cash, that is one show that my family used to always watch as long as we were home. I can remember seeing a lot of those guests listed above. I remember seeing Dylan, Joni (my first exposure to her), Neil Young, James Taylor, The Monkees (not on this tracklist), and many of the others. I don't remember Derek & the Dominoes. Maybe we were out that night.

I would like a volume 2 that would include The Monkees and others not on this one. It would also be nice to have some other performances from the same artists that were not included. For example, I think Joni Mitchell also performed "Mr Tambourine Man" on The Johnny Cash show. I could be wrong, that might have been on another show. Maybe Rich can let us know?

I would like for them to release the complete shows, but I don't know if I would make it through all of them. Compilations like this might make it more manageable for someone like me.

This is GREAT news! I remember both the Dylan show and the Eric Clapton show. At the time I was really into Carl Perkins. Before playing Blue Suede Shoes Eric said something like Carl has always been one of HIS idols and he was looking forward to playing with him. The Dylan/Cash duet was great! I'm in for both the DVD and CD.

RE: The Monkees. The liner notes to the Monkees season 2 DVD box set mention that, during 1969, they made TV appearances (as a trio of Mike, Mickey, and Davy) on The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, Laugh-In, Tonight Show, Joey Bishop Show, Johnny Cash Show, and Happening '69. The appearance on the Glen Campbell show is includes as a bonus on the box. They don't sing.

My local PBS station is having one of their quarterly fund raising festivals and right now they are featuring this dvd set and are showing many musical segments. I'm definitely buying this set when its released.

Also......on PBS they are offering the dvd set plus other premiums for certain pledge amounts. The one that has caught my eye is a bonus cd that is included. They offer the bonus cd of audio performances from the tv show mentioned earlier, but also they are offering a bonus cd called "More Songs From The Personal File"........ten songs recorded acoustically, and I heard the tracklist and these songs are definitely not on the "Personal File" collection. So of course I'd like to have this cd, but I'm not about to shell out $200 to get the dvd set plus the 2 bonus cds. Hopefully this cd will get released somehow in another form.

This was my grandmother's favorite TV show. She thought highly of Cash (I doubt she knew much of his personal problems) and demanded to watch each week.

Funny to think of her sitting through Derek and the Dominos, CCR, etc.

I remember my parents watching this, and I know I watched it with them sometimes. I must have been a bit too young to realize how cool some of the musical guests were.

Zane and Steve T,

Sorry for not getting back to you guys on this. I have been swamped with my new job, school starting back this week for both of my kids and football league for my son.

So I have neglated my posts. Hell, I am so far behind on just reading everyone else's, posts most sections go two pages of new items "not read".

I think Jimbo is correct, (as usual right?) on the Monkees question but will try and confirm that this weekend. (gotta watch something, so it might as well be good)

On the disc that has Joni, which is one I have not watched yet, (8/30/69)the other guests are Ed Ames, Roy Clark and The Monkees. Here are the songs listed but it does not give who does what either solo or with JC.

You find out as you watch. But for those who are curious the songs are: (and as I am not a massive Monkee's fan, I can't begin to guess which one they sing; not until I watch it. But I'll bet one of you guesses it correctly)

--Ring of Fire
--Long Black Veil ( I think the previously mentioned one with Joni)
--Come Along & Ride This Train
--As Long as the Grass Shall Grow
--Ballad of Ira Hayes
--Love of YJE Common People (the yje is typed as is so not sure what)
--Everybody Loves a Nut
--Frankie's Man Johnny Sing
--Pretty Sue
--Johnny Yuma
--Lead Me Father

BTW, I know this will suprise many of you, as it did me, but I only paid $31.99 for this great 6 disc boot set. I stole it as IMO it is worth 3x that.

It's been awhile since I've seen it but as I recall, The Monkees (minus Peter) opened their appearance on the Johnny Cash Show with a quick version of "Last Train To Clarksville" that only lasted one verse before going into an acoustic "Nine Times Blue" in beautiful three-part harmony. Johnny then joined the boys on "Everybody Loves A Nut", the title cut from Johnny's album of novelty-type songs. This song included quite a bit of hamming-it-up. It's actually pretty embarrassing. I wonder if this one will make the final cut of the box.
