>> Scott Walker reveals new album details

Singing legend Scott Walker has revealed details of his forthcoming instrumental album, which will be titled, 'And Who Shall Go To The Ball? And What Shall Go To The Ball?'

The album, being released on 4AD Records, will hit the shelves on September 24.

'And Who...' is a wholly instrumental, 25-minute album broken down into four movements.

The record is the result of Walker being commissioned to write music for a contemporary dance piece by London's South Bank Centre. <<

>> SCOTT WALKER UNVEILS NEW INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM

Scott Walker is to follow up last year’s “The Drift” with a new instrumental album this September.

“And Who Shall Go To The Ball? And What Shall Go To The Ball?” is Walker’s soundtrack for a contemporary dance piece commissioned by the South Bank Centre.

The piece was choreographed by Rafael Bonachela and performed by dance group Candoco in Manchester last April.

“And Who Shall Go The The Ball? And What Shall Go To The Ball?” consists of four movements lasting a total of 25 minutes, and, according to Walker, "is full of edgy and staccato shapes or cuts, reflecting how we cut up the world around us as a consequence of the shape of our bodies."

According to Walker’s label, 4AD, the album will be released as a limited edition pressing featuring deluxe packaging, and will never be pressed again.

The dance piece will be performed at the following shows:

London Queen Elizabeth Hall (September 25, 26)
Poole Lighthouse (October 16, 17)
Sheffield Crucible (23)
Hatfield University Of Hertfordshire (26)
Leicester Peepul Centre (November 8)
Malvern Theatre (15)
Newcastle Dance City (24) <<

I'm sure the music will be interesting, but why would one of pop's greatest vocalists want to record an instrumental album?

FRom what I have read Scott feels as a songwriter/musician gets older they should not just bang out the same old pop tunes. There should be a progression as in jazz and classical. He is trying to mature, and become a composer, not just a singer and songwriter.

I guess he is trying to find the steps to keep interested and be interesting in essentially a youth oriented music form that really does not confer status to its older players ( unlike jazz, blues, classical, bluegrass, country, etc).

I can respect that, but he's really got the voice, so he should use it.

Have you heard "The Drift" at all? I did, and frankly, after that experience, the only way you could get me to buy another new Scott Walker release is if he doesn't sing on it. It was a deplorable record.
