Monday, August 6th, my children begin another year of education and I go back to rising at 6:00 AM instead of 7:30..... :sigh:

Personally, I think we should just make all children memorize every "Schoolhouse Rock" song, then set them loose on an unsuspecting world.

They go back then? That's BRUTAL! We've got another month. They'll barely have time to be bored, Kevin!

We start pretty early in the American South, Dan. However, they're usually finished around May 20th, so the number of school days is the same. Up North and out West, the school calendar is probably more in line with the way y'all do it over there.

I still have no idea why NBC allowed this bit to air on SNL.

Not that I mind, of course.

Early school days are stupid, districts with later school days have higher test scores, it just makes no sense.

That major sucks, I won't be starting school until late September.

Not really, Jacob. All that matters is the amount of days in school. Not when the start date is. Personally, I've loved teaching in August so I can get out of the heat of summer. When I'm home in May, and relaxing, it's never 100 degrees outside.

Best world for me. And my students tend to go up 1.2 annual year's progress every year.

Air conditioning doesn't exist in most British schools. I have a south-facing classroom and sometimes children just spontaneously burst into flames. It's a serious problem over here.

The new school they're building better have air con, for da sake of da kidz!

Should have been clear, I was referring to his complaint of getting up at 6 am, referring to the time a school day starts, not the date it begins.

If I had my will there would be no summer vacations and we'd move to a year around schedule rather than this agrarian bullshit.

Ah. Good point. My students don't arrive until 8:50am, so, yes, I'd agree with you, Jacob. My apologies.

The high school starts at 7:30, the middle school starts at 7:50, and the elementary school at 8:30. Luckily, the high school and middle school are next door to each other. I get up at 6:00 and get the kids up by 6:15. We leave by 7:00 and I drop off the first two by 7:15. I head back home and wait for my youngest kid's bus, which arrives at 7:40. Then I'm at work by 8:00. Home between 4:30 and 5:00, by which time all three kids have arrived home via bus.

Yeah, it sucks, but there's no way around it. My county just doesn't have enough buses or drivers. All the older kids are delivered first, then each bus also runs an elementary school route, hence the staggered start times. It could be worse. If my older kids had to ride the bus to school, then I'd be getting up about 5:00 because their bus arrives in our neighborhood at 6:05 AM. :ohno:

Both my kids are extremely happy to go back to school. Our neighborhood doesn't have any kids their age, and they've missed their friends.
