Elvis Costello on SNL in the mid 90s.

His backing band is the Beastie Boys.

No shit. The Beastie Boys.

Saw that when it originally aired. It is, indeed, awesome.

I never saw that before but very awesome. To add to it, the classic SNL clip of Radio Radio

Context for the young 'uns.

Quote:
Costello wanted to play "Radio Radio" on SNL. Columbia Records, Costello's US label, on the other hand, was interested in having an already-established song performed on SNL, to stoke the fires of interest in the band prior to the American release of My Aim Is True and This Year's Model. In the event, Costello began the SNL performance by playing "Less than Zero." However, after a few bars, he turned to the Attractions, waving his hand and yelling "Stop! Stop!," then said to the audience, "I'm sorry, ladies and gentlemen, there's no reason to do this song here," possibly referring to the obscure story behind "Less than Zero," which was written as a reply to British fascist Oswald Mosley. He then led the band in a performance of "Radio Radio." Costello was banned from Saturday Night Live for twelve years. This version of "Radio Radio" (fading into the "false start") can be found (in monaural) on Saturday Night Live: 25 Years of Musical Performances, Vol. 1 (track time - 3:08).

And I remember seeing that the first time it aired. Thought it was odd that they didn't let him come back and do a second number, later learned of the banning, but didn't know that Columbia Records wanted them to do "Less Than Zero". I remember thinking, "What's so controversial about 'Radio Radio' that they would ban him from being on SNL for playing it?"

Bannings: One too few . . .
Elvis Costello probably did other things we don't know about to deserve the banning.

I was told years ago they didn't want him to play a song about "radio" on television because of competition or something. Sounds silly, but I was young.

Back to Elvis Costello.

Elvis Costello is, for me, THE Elvis. Oh, I like Mr. Presley just fine, have a number of his records, totally recognize his impact on not only popular music, but pop culture in general.

But Elvis Costello is just awesome as hell, one of the great songwriters, full of energy, always trying to push his talents, always making music, taking chances. Great, great artist.

The interrupted Beastie Boys track is pretty awesome too- my favourite of theirs, as it goes: Sabotage.

edited for the most atrocious spelling this side of Stan.
