Have you ever had a friend or relative gushingly recommend something to you (book, movie, comic, CD, or TV show), then you saw it and wondered how much crack they'd been smoking?

Might have, I can't recall. I have DONE this to someone once though, to hilarious effect. I was reading the Illuminatus trilogy, and wasn't digging it at all, but it had all this stuff in it that a friend of mine has always been fascinated with, Illuminati, the Masons, etc, etc...gave it to him thinking he'd absolutely love it, even the writing style seemed like something he'd enjoy. He took it with him on his job, came back a month later and told me it was the worst dreck he'd ever read, and would I mind if he burned it! I didn't, and he did. :)

I object!

This is obviously a thinly veiled attack on me!

A close friend of mine is like my personal Rob Steinbrenner. He suggests I see something, I know I will hate it. If he didn't like something, I'm likely to enjoy it. I mean, this is a guy who really, really wanted to go see Street Fighter.

To this day, it remains the only film I've ever walked out on. Me and four other friends. We left the guy inside to watch the rest while we played arcade machines in the lobby.

So there is that.

I think you must have watched it wrong. When I watched it (the correct way) it was great.

I have a friend who's personal taste suggests not only a healthy crack habit, but also a powerful dependence on opium and various psychedelic drugs.

His favorite superhero film is Daredevil, he watches shows like American Idol and One Tree Hill, and has used my iTunes to purchase songs from Justin Timberlake, Kelly Clarkson, and Avril Lavigne. He thought Watchmen and Dark Knight were just alright, but then recently handed back a Superman/Batman: Public Enemies TPB and told me it was "one of the best comics he had ever read".

Not only that, he also reads classic works of literature in an effort to seem cultured, and always tells me how he appreciates symbolism. I have a suspicion that he doesn't know what the hell he's even talking about and just reads Cliff Notes or something and then pretends like he gets it.

Jesus.

Yep. My sister gave me some zombie DVD for Christmas of all things. Knew I'd just love it. It's an amateur zombie moobie written and directed by some middle-school girl.

I can say it's not as bad as you imagine it could be. But shee....

I hate zombie movies, but out of family loyalty, I did watch it.

Yes, I had the same answer, Prof! Someone thought *I* would like zombie stuff and I can't see why people follow it AT ALL.

Every single one of my coworkers under the age of 30 seems to think that "Boondock Saints" is the shiznit.

I can not disagree more ferociously.

But it's happened in reverse. I once recommended the movie "Ravenous" to someone, and they were quite upset by it.
