Not a bad collection for those without any ELP albums.

I may pick this up for the car as it is a nice overview and contains one of my fav ELP tunes "The Endless Enigma"

Slowly but surely I am rebuilding my ELP catlg with the purchases of the new mini-sleeve JVC Japanese 2006 issued series. These are the best sounding yet, even surpassing the previous K2 masters afew years back.

I'm glad ELP will be reissued for U.S. consumers but with my expectation that the bonus tracks will be redundant I decided to do the reissues noted above.

This looks quite good-not sure how it compares to the UK release The Ultimate ELP from 2004 which had this track listing:

1. Fanfare For The Common Man - (studio)
2. Still You Turn Me On - (studio)
3. Hoedown - (studio)
4. Black Moon - (studio)
5. Tarkus - (studio)
6. Eruption - (studio)
7. Stones Of Years - (studio)
8. Iconoclast - (studio)
9. Mass - (studio)
10. Manticore - (studio)
11. Battlefield - (studio)
12. Aquatarkus - (studio)
13. Jerusalem - (studio)
14. Tiger In A Spotlight - (studio)
15. Better Days - (studio)
16. I Believe In Father Christmas - (studio)
17. From The Beginning - (studio)
18. Knife-Edge - (studio)
19. Karn Evil Part 1 1st Impression - (studio)
20. Karn Evil Part 1 2nd Impression - (studio)
21. Nutrocker - (studio)
22. Peter Gunn Theme - (studio)
23. All I Want Is You - (studio)
24. Brain Salad Surgery - (studio)
25. Take A Pebble - (studio)
26. C'est La Vie - (studio)
27. Lucky Man - (studio)
28. Affairs Of The Heart - (studio)
29. Canario - (studio)
30. Pirates - (studio)
31. Great Gates Of Kiev - (studio)

I'd have most definitely found a way to get Pirates on the US one and at least one track from the awful "In The Hot Seat" which did have a good song or two. Is this I Believe In Father Christmas the Greg Lake (the better one) or the ELP version?

You would think "Pirates" would be a natural with the recent success of a certain movie franchise. I always thought it was one of their best tracks anyway.

I believe the first batch of these comes out April 24. In an interview in Goldmine, Carl Palmer said these were the best sounding yet though the band did not have anything to do with the remastering.
He also said no bonus tracks which brings me to a question-the recent (very recent) UK remasters from Sanctuary did have bonus tracks-did they sound good and where they nicely packaged? I'd rather get those than these as I can't imagine the sound being drastically better.

I could've bought advance copies of the first album and Tarkus at 'Rama, but I think even I'm maxed out on ELP reissues.

The ELP box set had a studio version of "Pirates" that I believe surpasses the Works release. They didn't use it originally due to a tape drop out which of course now can be remedied by todays technology.

That would be a nice bonus track especially with todays remastering.

I agree with JohnG, I did end of getting the two cd comp for the car. Nice set list.

Instead of re-releasing the albums once again (this is another group where I have multiple copies of each album) they could have finally come out with 5.1 versions.

The DVDA of Brain Salad Surgery is awesome. We need more!:)

I actually have a bootleg DTS cd of "Trilogy" which isn't half bad but oh how I would love an official DTS release of that album.

Just picked up the Essential today - believe it or not, the first ELP CD I've ever bought - and I'm very pleased with this collection. Decent cross-section of songs and sound quality is great!

I picked up this Shout!Factory ELP comp when it was first released. I like it but... much online discussion has revealed that the Brain Salad Surgery tracks have been noticeably *remixed*... with some claiming the vocals for "Jerusalem" being totally different. (I haven't had the time to compare these tracks with any previous Rhino or Victory ELP remasters.) I'll leave it for the more-knowledgeable ELP fans to chime in on the controversy and their findings here.
It's baffling to hear *why* Shout!Factory (or ELP?) may have done this... and if any more "tampering" will occur with the yet-to-be-released ELP Shout!Factory remasters.

In any case, one may want to seek out the current Rhino Deluxe edition of Brain Salad Surgery (with the holographic cover art)... as it's likely to go OOP. (Borders has them cheap right now with the current BR 30% off coupon.)

I happen to like the overall track selection and the sound quality of The Essential ELP but there has been much online discussion and disagreement here too.
It's also looking like the upcoming individual ELP remasters from Shout!Factory will not be including any bonus material.

I believe it was around the Victory remasters that someone used the wrong mixes for Brain Salad Surgery. Hard to believe its still happening. "Jerusalem" is totally different from the standard version.

Amen to that.

Once this reissue campaign is complete, I'd truly appreciate it if someone could give me an educated opinion on which are "the" remasters to get (original mixes, best sound, best packaging, etc.). I don't want to buy the new ones and then find out later they're inferior for one reason or another.

So far, these ShoutFactory remasters are the best sound-wise IMO. They are faithful to the original mixes, whereas on The Essential ELP comp, ShoutFactory (as I posted earlier) used some different mixes for some Brain Salad Surgery tracks.
It remains to be seen how ShoutFactory will treat the yet-to-be-released Brain Salad Surgery CD but... I can safely say one can't go wrong with the sound quality on these new remasters. IMO, they finally got it right.

With every upside, there is sometimes a downside... and the negative here is that ShoutFactory is lacking somewhat on the ELP artwork - they are definitely NOT as sharp and colorful as the Rhino CDs. For example, check out the first CD Emerson, Lake & Palmer - it's noticeably blurry and dull compared with the original artwork.
And... Rhino's holographic Brain Salad Surgery cover was really cool. I'd be surprised (judging by the inferior quality ShoutFactory has displayed thus far) to see the new BSS artwork surpass Rhino's excellent version.
But...what is more important... the artwork or the sound? My complaint on the artwork is subjective, and may be viewed by others as a minor quibble.

There have already been favorable reviews on these new ELP remasters posted on other boards. I haven't come across any complaints yet but it could be many folks aren't showing very much interest in buying yet another round of ELP remasters.
But I would recommend to anyone who is interested... to try buying one CD and then compare it with a past version, and listen for yourself.
Your own ears are the best judge! :)

BTW... I like Rhino's Deluxe BSS. But I prefer the MFSL for Trilogy. ShoutFactory has the best version of Emerson, Lake & Palmer that I have heard... but your mileage may vary.
Overall, I really like what ShoutFactory has released thus far.

Steve

This seems to be an unfortunate but common trend with reissues. I've noticed many instances of duller/blurrier cover art marring what is otherwise an excellent remaster. Another pet peeve of mine is intentional tampering with the original artwork (adding/deleting/changing elements, creating new cover art altogether, etc.).

Quote:

Certainly the sound is more important, but it still pisses me off when labels go through the trouble and expense of remastering and reissuing an album, yet muck up the artwork.

Many thanks for the ELP recommendation, Steve. I'll keep my fingers crossed that their BSS remaster offers a similar improvement (and the right mix!).

These remasters are beautiful. They sound so good it's truly great to see that ELP were treated so well finally. I thought the artwork was fine, but yes, a tad blurry. However, the original artwork is included in all respects and that's a cool thing.
I too was wondering why they went out of order here, and how far they will go (will the reunion albums from Black Moon on be covered? They were by Sanctuary but I didn't get any of those).
Anyway, between these remasters and the upcoming boxset I am truly enjoying ELP all over again!
P.S.
Ven-nice to see The Simpsons going to Alaska in the Simpsons Movie!

OK, so, despite my earlier protestations, I couldn't say no to a promo of the new Welcome Back... reissue from Shout!, so sue me. Anyway, there's a promotional insert that pictures the ELP titles available from Shout!, and Brain Salad Surgery is included. They've been releasing these in pairs, so I suspect BSS should hit the streets any time now.
