To mark the 40th anniversary of the original release of Pink Floyd's first album 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn', a special edition is planned for release via EMI Records on 28th August in North America, and Monday September 3rd in Europe.

The packaging, designed by Storm Thorgerson, resembles a cloth-covered book, and holds 3 CD discs, along with a 12-page reproduction Syd Barrett notebook.
CD Contents

Discs 1 and 2 will contain the full 'Piper' album, represented in both stereo and mono versions. Both have been newly remastered by James Guthrie.

Disc 3 includes bonus tracks, including the following: all the Pink Floyd singles from 1967, ('Arnold Layne', 'See Emily Play', and 'Apples And Oranges'), plus the B sides 'Candy And A Current Bun' and 'Paintbox'.

Other tracks are a version of 'Interstellar Overdrive' - Take 2 of the original recording sessions, previously only available on an EP in France - and the 1967 stereo version of 'Apples And Oranges'.

Other activities surrounding the 40th anniversary celebrations will be announced in due course.

(Updated thread title with new release date. ~ Linda)

I'm there, for the mono. :) Hope they fix the mono "Flaming" this time ~ the limited mono release from a few years ago was an edited version with one verse missing.

I'm in for this one as well. August 28th this year is going to be an expensive release week for me.

I remember that! Although I forgot what the problem was exactly. Was that edited verse-less version of Flaming released somewhere prior to that? Or was that totally unique to that particular reissue?

Is that stereo version of Apples and Oranges previously unreleased? Or has that been released somewhere before? Thanks for the post. I look forward to this.

I think it was a single edit. Some countries had Flaming/Gnome as a 7-inch in 1967 ... I'm pretty sure that was the only place it's appeared on CD, though.

I'm a little surprised they're not including one of the many booted PF shows from this period.

The stereo "Apples and Oranges" appeared on an early 1970's Dutch L.P. "The Best of Pink Floyd".
This whole idea of a 40th Anniversary edition of "Piper at The Gates of Dawn" is nothing more than a fan wish/rumor started on the Hoffman board, though certainly I would buy such a product if it ever existed.By the way,the mix of "Flaming" on the UK mono CD is only very slightly shorter. It is missing exactly one measure(4 beats) at the end.

Well, I thought I read over at the other forum as well as over at KLIZ that this has now been officially confirmed. There's been a press release put out and that's what I saw. Remember when we all thought the next two Monkees Deluxe Editions were rumors as well? Those have been officially confirmed as well.
Because of the fact that the music industry is in such upheaval nowadays, the way we hear about breaking news may change and the confirmation process fo what we read about may end up taking a little longer to have confirmed than we are normally used to expecting.

Yes, my mono version is only missing the second-to-last chord, which is 4 beats long - I rather like it.
(I thought maybe the oringinal had this same edit...)

Alright,it now appears that this 3-CD set is for real, but how much does it give us that we don't already have? Hopefully, the unedited mono version of "Flaming",and the (Official) CD debut of the stereo "Apples and Oranges" & "Interstellar Overdrive"(French E.P. version/Take 2).And that's it.
Too bad that the feuding Floyds are so restrictive.Surely, there must be additional material in the vaults.Yes,I know that most of the group's 1967-68 multitracks have been misplaced or disposed of,but there are undoubtedly numerous finished tracks existing as mixes. In fact,on one of the occasions that I visited EMI's old Manchester Square building in London in the 1990's,EMI executive Mike Heatley told me that most of Pink Floyd's unreleased tracks were from the Syd Barrett era. That's amazing considering how brief Barrett's tenure with the group was.

"Scream Thy Last Scream" and "Vegetable Man" at the very least. Good, clear, finished-sounding mixes have appeared on boots for years. A definitive collection of ALL the Syd-era material is probably a pipe dream ... I'd get this just for a corrected "Flaming" but will also hope for more stuff on the third disc than has been announced, and that the new remastering is a noticeable upgrade over the previous mono release.

"Scream Thy Last Scream" & "Vegetable Man" are actaully from the sessions for the group's second album "A Saucerful of Secrets",so they're not "Piper" outtakes per se.

It looks like Disc 3 of this set is a reissue of the "bonus disc" from the Shine On box set, with some extra material appended. I wonder if the early singles are remastered yet again.

Just to torture myself with what EMI won't let me legitimately own, here's "Vegetable Man":

>> Pink Floyd to release expanded version of classic album

24.Jul.07 6:14pm

Pink Floyd are to release a special 40th anniversary edition of their classic debut album 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn'.

The expanded version, out on September 3, features mono and stereo versions of the LP, as well as a disc of bonus tracks.

The bonus tracks are the 1967 singles are 'Arnold Layne', 'See Emily Play', 'Apples And Oranges' plus the B-sides 'Candy And A Currant Bun' and 'Paintbox'.

Other tracks are an exclusive edit of 'Interstellar Overdrive', previously only available on an EP in France, and the 1967 stereo version of 'Apples And Oranges', which has never before been officially released.

The packaging, designed by longtime Floyd collaborator Storm Thorgerson, resembles a cloth-covered book with the original Vic Singh photo on the front, and holds the three CDs, along with an eight-page reproduction of one of the group's then-frontman Syd Barrett's notebooks. <<

Pre-order listing is up! It says this is a brand new remastering of all the tracks.
