I'll be leaving in an hour or so for a weekend trip to New England. Staying with my ol' college buddy Joe and his family. On Saturday, we'll be meeting up with Chris for a day of CD shopping and related shenanigans in Beantown--where, of course, we plan to test out that old bromide "Banned in Boston." Due to family commitments, Walter won't be able to join us this time. :(

Anyway, inspired by the trip, this Friday List topic is New England. Places, people, anything that applies.

Weekend in New England--Barry Manilow
New England--Jonathan Richman
Please Come to Boston--Dave Loggins
Moonlight in Vermont--Frank Sinatra
Massachusetts--Bee Gees

How about a California garage band's tribute to Boston, Dirty Water by the Standells

Or a country song, Whoever's in New England by Reba McEntire

James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James" has a particularly nice passage:

Now the first of December was covered with snow
And so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston
Lord, the Berkshires seemed dreamlike on account of that frosting
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go

M.T.A. Song--Kingston Trio

In fact, today I learned that the Boston M.T.A. pass is dubbed the "Charlie Ticket" after the lyrics of the song!

"Well, did he ever return?
No, he never returned,
and his fate is still unlearned.
He may ride forever 'neath the streets of Boston,
he's the man that never returned."

Not on topic, but I just walked past the actual Memory Motel during my vacation last week in Montauk. (Spent most of my time boogie-boarding at Nick's Beach.)
