Manilow May Revisit The '70s For Next Album

Image

October 06, 2006, 10:25 AM ET

Gary Graff, Detroit

As he prepares to unveil his musical trip through the '60s, Barry Manilow predicts that a similar visit to the '70s is inevitable. "Well, it seems like there should be one," says Manilow, who releases "The Greatest Songs of the Sixties," his sequel to last year's chart-topping "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties," on Oct. 31. "It all depends on whether [the new CD] is a hit record. And if it is, I would imagine Clive [Davis] and Arista would say, 'Let's go for the '70s.'"

The tricky part of that, Manilow acknowledges, is that the '70s was a decade when he enjoyed his greatest success as an artist, meaning that he'd likely be recording songs that were chart companions to his own hits. "I can't ignore that," he says, "but I do have an idea of how I would tackle that. But I have to talk to Clive about it."

On "...Sixties," Manilow covers 13 songs by the Beatles, Burt Bacharach, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Jackie DeShannon, the Righteous Brothers, Dean Martin and others. The set's first single is Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You," while Manilow recruited the Association to join him for a medley of its hits "Cherish" and "Windy."

Manilow has another Halloween treat for fans; "First & Farewell," a two-disc DVD that features footage from rehearsals for his first-ever headlining tour in 1974 and his 2004 farewell tour performance at the Pond in Anaheim. These days Manilow performs almost exclusively at the Las Vegas Hilton, but he's quietly returning to the road for select engagements rather than full-fledged tours.

"I'm not touring; I can't do that anymore, but we're doing bits and pieces," he explains. "We've put together an arena show, and every so often I will go out and do one night somewhere and then come right home. Our first night of doing that is in Atlantic City on Oct. 14, and then the following Saturday (Oct. 21) is in Chicago. And then that's it for four, five months; if we do another one, it won't be 'til January or February."

Revisiting the '70s? He actually likes witnessing people using his records for skeet shooting practice? I have this vision of the late John Entwistle using a sub-machine gun right now. Yep! Just like in The Kids Are Alright.
I don't know why I'm saying things like this today.

Because it makes about as much sense as Barry Manilow doing a '70s album??? :o

Great scene from one of the great rock movies of all time.

This is due out in September already.

Image

1. The Way We Were, 1974
2. It Never Rains In Southern California, 1972
3. My Eyes Adored You, 1975
4. You've Got A Friend (duet with Melissa Manchester), 1971
5. The Long And Winding Road, 1970
6. How Can You Mend A Broken Heart? 1971
7. Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word, 1976
8. (They Long To Be) Close To You, 1970
9. Don t Go Breaking My Heart (duet with Rosie O Donnell), 1976
10. Bridge Over Troubled Water, 1970
11. Sailing, 1979
12. He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, 1970
13. Could It Be Magic?, 1975

I guess that means it's time to start planning...
The Greatest Songs of the Eighties.

How about:

1. Lady (Kenny Rogers 1980)
2. Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Queen 1980)
3. Lost in Love (Air Supply 1980)
4. Love On the Rocks (Neil Diamond 1981)
5. Tell Her About It (Billy Joel 1983)
6. Against All Odds (Phil Collins 1984)
7. Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper 1984)
8. Drive (The Cars 1984)
9. The Way It Is (Bruce Hornsby & The Range 1986)
10. Holding Back the Years (Frantic Elevators 1982 / Simply Red 1986)
11. (I've Had) The Time of My Life [duet with Carly Simon] (Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes 1987)
12. Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car (Billy Ocean 1988)
13. Kokomo (The Beach Boys 1988)

Notice how much more difficult it is to find "Greatest" songs as the decades progress?

He's doing a duet with Rosie O' Donnell and covering one of his own songs??

Barry's not going to be happy until he's ruined every decade, is he??

I personally can't wait for his nineties cover album, where Manilow tackles "Black Hole Sun," "Baby Got Back" and his cover version of Michael Bolton's cover version of "When A Man Loves A Woman."

Clive Davis has to go!

That Manilow release is listed as a DualDisc, believe it or not. (Thought the companies had all given up on DualDiscs?) And there's going to be a special Deluxe Edition in addition to the standard one.

Standard Edition (one DualDisc):

Deluxe Two-Disc Edition:

>> The two-disc set contains a DualDisc with "Making of the Album" video plus a bonus CD of nine additional classic Barry Manilow tracks performed acoustically. <<

I heard him one day on XM. He was doing a cover of "Welcome To The Jungle." I thought it was great. With a name like that, his music is pretty much what you'd expect.

Luckily, I can avoid stressing out over this because I wasn't planning to buy it in the first place.

What's next, Rod Stewart does an album of Barry Manilow songs, Manilow does an album of Stewart songs and they go on tour together??

Now I'm scared. Very scared.

I'm starting to be of a mind that any new release by either Barry Manilow or Rod Stewart should be posted in "From The Vaults."

I think Stewart and Manilow should be placed in the vaults

For those interested, barrynet.com lists these as the 9 songs on the acoustic bonus disc. (And Lord knows how many other tracks will show up as retailer exclusives, UK-only tracks, etc. as has been Barry's wont on the 50s & 60s albums!)

+++

Mandy (1974)
Looks Like We Made It (1977)
Even Now (1978)
Weekend In New England (1976-1977)
Somewhere In The Night (1978-1979)
Can't Smile Without You (1978)
Copacabana (At The Copa) (1978)
This One's For You (1976)
I Write The Songs (1975)

Greatest songs of the 70s? Greatest in terms of creating stomach pain, yes. This soft rock nightmare will sell though-not as well as the last one however. I think Barry should go the Pat Boone route-only cover Death Metal from such charmers as Six Feet Under, Cannibal Corpse, Mayhem and Venom.
Sadly, I'd actually buy that just beacuse of the trainwreck factor. But at least that would be funnny-this is just plain sad.
And, yes, Clive Davis gave up knowing about music years and years ago. He actually battled Kelly Clarkson about musical integrity. Then again, he did ruin Santana too.

They can bill themselves as "BA-ROD."

Based on everything I've heard about this feud, Kelly Clarkson is the one with the musical integrity. Clive Davis wanted to force her to use his own hack songwriters (and only their songs). She wanted to write her own songs and let the chips fall where they may. I gotta give her credit - she's got guts!

Do I feel a sense of "deja vu" here? This is Mr. Manilow's second go round with an album of '70's covers -- remember "Summer Of '78" that was released in late 1996?

Image

1. Summer Of '78
2. Interlude: Love's Theme
3. Reminiscing
4. I Go Crazy
5. When I Need You
6. The Air That I Breathe
7. Bluer Than Blue
8. We've Got Tonite
9. I'd Really Love To See You Tonight
10. Sometimes When We Touch
11. Never My Love
12. Just Remember I Love You

That's what I meant! He battled her and she stood her ground. She's hot and she can sing, but I don't like her music. Still, good for her telling that doddering old fool where to stick his bad, aged advice.

Nothing will ever top when you called Rod "a sad, pathetic clown in Clive Davis' circus" in the old ICE forum. (I keep waiting for someone to use that as a signature in their posts. :))

I came across this guy a year ago...I heard a "duet" with "Stephen Hawking" on "The Girl Is Mine". I don't think I've ever come closer to actually pissing my pants from laughing.

Back in the seventies, Clive also battled with the Bay City Rollers. The group's guitarist, Eric Faulkner, wanted to write more of the group's songs, but being Clive, he forced some MOR songs on them. It didn't help that vocalist Les McKeown wanted to use outside songwriters as well.
