Just found out that CD Universe is taking pre-orders for the import (England) version of 'Genesis 1983-1998'. The new box set is set for a Sept. 3 release. The individual albums from the period ('Genesis', 'Invisible Touch', 'We Can't Dance' & 'Calling All Stations') are also available and will release in England on the same date. As on the previous box set (and the individual discs), these will be SACD hybirds. No word on USA release as yet however, Rhino should follow suit within months of the British release.

Thanks for the info. I'm still not sure if I will buy these as the last lot left alot to be desired sound-wise.

Ooooh. Then, oh. Maybe not a good choice.

Me too John, the material on this set and the sound of the past release does not make it too tempting to order this one.

Oh well-I love all Genesis and Calling All Stations was a great album. There's excellent material on every one of these releases and I'm not sure what was wrong sound or production-wise on any of those albums, but to each his own.
There was plenty of pop stuff on each album, but they were well crafted songs and progressive tracks from this era like "Home By The Sea", "Driving The Last Spike", "The Last Domino" and "Fading LIghts" are amazing IMO. I'll definitely get this as the previous box was incredible.

The difference with this round of releases is that "Genesis" and "Invisible Touch" were never included in the 1994 remaster campaign....a move that the record company never explained and which I still don't understand.

Maybe because at that time, they didn't feel they needed remastering. Both those albums were released initially on the CD format, I believe, and they probably wanted to focus their attention on the older stuff.

I expect a more favorable fan response to the mixes in the next box set, because, for 3 of these 4 abums,Nick Davis was the original engineer/co-producer.He therefore has a full understanding of how 3 of these 4 albums were recorded.I suspect for the David Hentschel-produced albums in 1976-82,that Hentschel used quite a bit of compression on the multitracks. This doesn't excuse the excessive reverb that Davis added to the "A Trick of The Tail" album.

I don't get it-the remaster of "A Trick Of The Tail" sounds beautiful to me-nothing sounds compressed (a word everyone seems to throw around-not accusing you, Phil, I mean a lot of people) without really knowing what it means.
It's one of the best sounding remasters I've ever heard and I listened to it with 3 other Genesis die-hards. Now, I don't have a huge stereo system and no 5.1, but to my ears and my friends it sounds fantastic.
I will agree-there is a bit of reverb, and I noticed it in "Squonk", but it wasn't enough to bother me much at all.
I just wanted to state that we all hear different things I suppose, but I think these remasters are awesome.

All Rock record producers use compressor/limiters during the recording process, but David Hentschel produced a thinner, more dynamicly squashed, less aggresive drum sound versus the harder-hitting Hugh Padgham produced drum sound.Padgham used compressors too,but less agressively,as the group wanted a harder drum sound, and more aggressive overall sound,in the wake of Punk & New Wave.

I mean that much of what listeners have criticised in the new mixes of the Hentschel-produced materal,is inherent in the way Hentschel recorded the multitracks.

I once had a home studio, and had compressor/limiters,so I know what I'm talking about.I tended to use them on vocals to even out inconsistencies in a vocalist's singing and proximity to the microphone,so that the vocals would always "cut through" the instruments in a mix(Particularly useful,as I was often asked to record heavy metal!)

When other people on forums such as this speak of "compression",they're actually refering to the mastering practice "Maximizing",which refers to making the sound constantly loud and maxed out,so there's no dynamics(I.E. contrast between loud and soft passages).Example "The Rolling Stones-A Bigger Bang")

You know what...I would get flamed on the *other* forum...but I actually prefer the new remixes/remasters to the originals.

If you like them, that's all that matters.

>> Genesis to release expanded versions of classic albums

Genesis are to release expanded versions of their biggest-selling albums later this year.

Between them, 'Genesis' (1983), 'Invisible Touch' (1986), 'We Can't Dance' (1991) and 'Calling All Stations' (1997) sold over 40 million copies on CD alone.

The albums will be all be re-released in 5.1 surround sound and stereo mixes and will be on SACD/CD hybrid and DVD dual disc sets containing bonus material exclusive to each release.

Among the DVD extra are videos, tour documentaries and interviews.

A box set containing all of the expanded albums and an extra CD featuring rarities called 'Extra Tracks 1983-1997' is released on the same day.

Genesis recently completed a sold-out reunion tour of Europe, where they played to over a million people, and will perform dates in North America later this year. <<
