Neal/Denny Dark Knight or Dick Sprang rainbow guy? Same sort of question as the Superman topic I started.

I enjoyed Batman best from 1987 through the 90s. Until he got a bit too nutty. But he doesn't break into eras quite so easily as Superman in the time I've read him.

Actually the Kane/Finger stuff is decent. I like the art, simple as it is. Siegel's Superman writing is better though than Finger's Batman.

I've hardly read any Batman stories from 1942 through 1975 or so.

I also liked how michael Keaton played Batman/Bruce Wayne.

Neal Adams Batman vs Ras Ahl Ghul.

Accept no other.

Yes.

I think he was the most interesting Bruce in particular to date.

Borrow, rent, or Byrne-steal the Tales of the Demon TPB. If you don't like anything in there, you truly hate Ras.

I'll check it out. Not to say I hate him-but his popularity mystifies me :)

But I have very little knowledge of DC pre-crisis beyond what I've read about it so I will try and get it.

Rob, you should check out the Englehart/Rogers "Strange Apparitions" trade as well as the above mentioned Ras Al Ghul Demon collection. If you don't care for those, then Batman of that era is definitely not for you. I think it's terrific stuff. The first Batman book I ever read as a kid was an oversized collection of Ras stories (all of them in that book Kurt mentioned). The cover made it appear Robin was dead, and I had to have it to find out the story. Made my mom send away for it and everything! :)

Thumbs-up vote for the Englehart-Rogers run here as well. One of my absolute favorites.

There was some interesting stuff going on in the Batman titles in the late '80s and early '90s. The Alan Grant stuff, particularly. I didn't love it, per se, but I did read it.

I loved the Mike W. Barr run in the late '80s. Especially the Alan Davis issues.

I highly recommend any of the Don Newton and Gene Colan era stuff. And, of course, anytime Jim Aparo draws Batman.

The Denny O'Neal Adams stuff (heh) is great fun.

Some of the mid-'60s Infantino stuff is fun.

I like the really early stuff from the Kane/Finger/Robinson/Sprang era. The first Joker story from Batman #1 is still, to this day, my favorite Joker story.

Post-O'Neil/Adams all the way. Personal favorite is Batman Year One. I love the Grant/Breyfogle run on Detective.

Artists:
Adams
Aparo
Breyfogle
Mazzuchelli
Miller

I guess that would put me in the mid-80s to now camp.

Oh, and Batman: The Animated Series is still the best portrayal of the character I've seen.

World's Finest. The old series. Still my fave Batman.

..oh, and Kevin Smith writing him in Green Arrow. I liked that more than the rest of the writing in that series

I agree with Simon wholeheartedly. And for comics, it would be the Carmine Infantino "Caped Crusader" guy for me. I'm also partial to the Curt Swan Batman from the same era who appeared in World's Finest.

Curt Swan had some trouble with Batmans symbol, but otherwise was a pretty seamless transition from other artists at the time. He could emulate the "house style" when he needed to. Still my favorite Superman artist.
I like the 60s show for what it is (and would pick it up in a heartbeat if they ever finally release it on DVD!), but prefer the TAS-style Batman, darker, but still able to smile and have friends.

Michael Keaton was great. There was a good bit NOT to like about the Burton Batman, but it wasn't Keaton. The man's got yards of talent.

Artwise, gotta go with Neal Adams. Honorable mention to Miller/Janson for Batman: Dark Knight and David Mazzuchelli Batman: Year One, for standalone excellence.

NAILED the spelling on Mazzucchelli!

(as far as YOU know)

Batman: Year One was perfect in art, writing, and characterization.

Perfect, I tells ya.
