Don't think anybody's posted yet about Sony's new Bob Dylan box set, a 3-disc affair simply entitled DYLAN:

http://www.dylan07.com

While a career-spanning box set of Bob material isn't a bad idea (the BIOGRAPH and BOOTLEG SERIES boxes are certainly geared towards the completist), I wish some unreleased gems could be included on this set. We all know Bob has enough of them...still, maybe it will turn it out to be a worthwhile package after all. Track info hasn't been released yet. Check it out!

On newswires this afternoon:

Fan input to shape fall Dylan retrospective
By JESSICA LETKEMANN
Billboard.com
NEW YORK — Fan input will help shape the songs that will make the
cut for “Dylan,” a three-disc Bob Dylan retrospective and companion
greatest hits disc due Oct. 1 via Columbia.
The larger set will feature 51 songs that will be chosen in part
based on “fan lobbying” and votes cast at Dylan07.com, which
launched in February. Visitors to the site will also find the record’s
artwork, a trailer and details on how to contribute photos to a future
online Dylan photo album.
The three-disc “Dylan” will be released in standard packaging as
well as in a “deluxe” cloth-bound, photo-laden version that includes
ample liner notes. The one-disc “best of” version of “Dylan” will
feature 18 songs.
Dylan is on tour in North America through late July and will then
head to Australia and New Zealand for an August
run.

This is all well and good, and I hope many people will be interested, but I would rather see the complete Basement Tapes officially released.
They can leave The Band stuff off. At this moment, my favorite Dylan track is "Changing of the Guards".

When I first saw the title of the thread, my imagination ran wild. Volume 8 of "The Bootleg Series"? A "Biograph 2" package commemerating the 22 years since the first classic boxed set? A career-spanning live anthology of unreleased tracks? The rare and unreleased stuff from the I-tunes package? Or the best stuff from the streaming live tracks previously featured on Dylan's website?

Nope, none of the above. From the website: "This DYLAN set will provide a comprehensive introduction to an important body of work that continues to impact our culture and attract multitudes of new fans each year."

In other words, a greatest hits collection. Yawn--we've already had three volumes of "Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits", as well as "The Essential Bob Dylan" and "The Best Of Bob Dylan". And while I like Dylan's music, it really doesn't thrill me to look at photographs of the guy. Oops--excuse me--"classic and rare Dylan imagery".

I agree with you AMV, do we really need another Bob Dylan Greatest Hits collection. Give us some more unreleased gems!

I'm actually not opposed to a career-spanning box set for Dylan. I've always thought that the Biograph set was way overrated. To begin with, it's way too sketchy and it jumps around chronologically without any logic.

However, Bob Dylan's career simply cannot be adequately covered by any 3-disc set. A more logical approach would be to release separate 3-4 disc sets divided into decades: one for the 1960s, . . . the 1970s, . . . etc.

This way, at least you can have enough room to fit hit singles, major album tracks, and rarities for each era.

Yeah, especially when BMG club still has a number of the SACD hybrids.

And the "Dylan" album of covers from the 70s still remains unavailble except through iTunes.

Hi. I was a ICE reader and subscriber from the very beginning until its sad demise, but have only just stumbled upon this forum and am impressed by the community that's been established here.

This is a bit off topic, but has there been any word on when more remasters of Bob's catalog might be released? Thanks!

Neal, I have the one and only cd release from Japan, but I did a search through ITunes and couldn't find any of the songs available there. Were they withdrawn at some point?

This album also came out on CD from one of the European countries back in the 90's (titled "A Fool Such A I"), but it is quite pricy these days. I have a pretty good CD-R that was taken from a vinyl source by a thoughful Dylan collector. I believe that the nine "Dylan" tracks are available on I-tunes only as part the $200 or so Dylan catalog package on there.

One project or another usually comes out of the Dylan pipeline about once a year; unfortunately, this boxed set appears to be it for 2007. The first batch of Dylan reissues back in 2003 had been anticipated by fans for at least ten years; in the meantime, Sony/Columbia/CBS (whatever they call themselves these days) seems to have it's hands full not reissuing upgrades of the Springsteen back catalog.

I have a copy of "Dylan" on CD. It's the European edition titled "A Fool Such As I". I got it on E Bay a couple of years ago for around $70. It's the most I've ever paid for a single CD, but I still think it was worth it. Truthfully, that is probably the only way get the album these days. I doubt it will ever be reissued (now watch, it'll be reissued next week). Bite the bullet and get it on that site or something similar.

Wow! I didn't realize that...thanks for the information. And this was a legitimately licensed release?

I'm looking at the CD now. The cover is just called "Dylan", same as the LP from 1973. The song selection is on the cover, same as the record. The CD spine however, says Bob Dylan (A Fool Such As I). It's Columbia CD 32286. The bar code is 5 099703 228625. I hope this helps. Good luck. David
