I think that "hippie" had a different meaning in the early 60's, more of a "beatnik" type than the "summer of love" hippie". I believe that you can hear "hippie" in the lyrics of "South Street" by the Orlons from 63.

Interesting point, James, I thought the word "hippie" first appeared around '66-'67.

Well, I gotta correct myself. Turns out I've misunderstood "South Street" all these years! But, I am sure that the word "hippie" was in use before '66. I'll have to recall some other use for evidence though....

Where do all the hippist meet? (South Street, South Street)
Where the dancin is elite (South Street, South Street)
Side by side we're loose and neat
When we're stompin down the street
Hurry down, baby she's the hippist street in town!(Oh baby)

I think "hipster" was in use in the beatnik years, as was "hip".

Wasn't there also an expression "hep" as in "hepcat", pre-1960's? That one may have been exclusive for jazz musicians, i'm not sure.

"Hippie Walk", in two parts, was the Shirelles' last Scepter single, released in 1968... revolutionary girl group that they were, the Shirelles didn't predict the hippie movement after all!

Here's a nice Shirelles singles discography (the whole site's dynamite):

Hippie
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hippie, occasionally spelled hippy, refers to a subgroup of the counterculture that began in the United States during the early 1960s, becoming an established social group by 1965, and expanding to other countries before declining in the 1970s

And, can't forget THE HIPPY HIPPY SHAKE
by The Swinging Blue Jeans from 1964
