With the massive Rhino box set now OOP, Razor & Tie (in conjuction with Starbucks) has put together a 2-CD set of performances recorded at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. It includes 3 previously unreleased tracks: "Homeward Bound" and "Sounds of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel, and "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield. The set sports a new remastering job and new liner notes by Andrew Loog Oldham, with at least some of the proceeds going to charity.

Due in stores June 5, but I got an advanced copy at 'Rama.

Wow, has it been 40 years? I've got the Rhino box and I think I prefer this festival to Woodstock. I think Monterey was more groundbreaking. The Beach Boys chickened out of Monterey, which was a shame. "Good Vibrations" would have been perfect for this festival.

OK, my 1997 Rhino Monterey set has Country Joe & The Fish doing "Not So Sweet, Martha Lorraine", not "Section 43". (I need to dig out my 1992 copy)

By the way, I've always wondered why the 1992 boxed version featured The Blues Project performing "Wake Me, Shake Me" as the last track on Disc 2, but the 1997 slipcover version subsitituted "The Flute Thing" (a fact not disclosed on the outer cover).

What amazed me about this set when it first came out was how incredible it sounded. To hear a 1967 set by the Who that sounded better than anything on the 1982 "Who's Last" album was downright unreal, and I'm skeptical that any new remastering job could possibly even matter, but I've been wrong before. I don't know if I'm going to pick up this new set or not--Music compliations lately have been sporting the word "essential" way too often for my liking, but I wouldn't hesitate to call the original 4-disc Monterey Pop box an absolutely essential listening experience. (This new set doesn't even have Hendrix's version of "Wild Thing"--What the hell are they thinking?)

I also have a very cool Rhino promo disc for this set--not just a sampler disc, but a 46-minute audio documentary containing an assortment of retrospective interviews found nowhere on the boxed set. Sweet!

I've got the Rhino set... the unreleased tracks notwithstanding, do I need the new 2-disc set?

You know, I went to the Amazon listing for this new set ... and the links on their page look kinda like this:

Monterey Pop Festival ~ 40th Anniversary Edition

Also available:

Monterey Pop Festival ~ 30th Anniversary Edition
Monterey Pop Festival ~ 25th Anniversary Edition

Maybe I should wait for the 45th Anniversary Edition?

The lineup on this album is killer….
Check out a couple of these tracks:

Janis Joplin & Big Brother and the Holding Company - "Down on Me" - WINDOWS AUDIO: http://mfile.akamai.com/2851/wma/raznti ... wnonme.asx

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "Like a Rolling Stone" - WINDOWS AUDIO: http://mfile.akamai.com/2851/wma/raznti ... gstone.asx

If you like those, take a look at the main media page I found here: http://www.razorandtiemedia.com/artistp ... artist=171

Looks like the album hits stores (and Starbucks racks!) on June 5th

I saw it in Starbucks today. Nice cover art. Glad I have the box, though.

Interestingly, Starbucks is offering this in a thick digipak, and regular outlets in a standard jewel case.

Anybody know if Johnny Rivers' performance from Monterey Pop has surfaced on disc anywhere? Or audio from Laura Nyro's performance? (I believe two of Laura's songs are available on the wonderful Criterion DVD set.)

I have a question for anyone with the box set. Simon and Gafunkel "Homeward Bound" and "The Sounds of Silence" and Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" are all marked previously unreleased. Can that be true? Did these appear on the box set?

"For What It's Worth" was not on the boxed set. For what it's worth, Buffalo Springfield wasn't even on the boxed set.

There's no S&G on the Rhino box set either.

I repeat the question I posted a while ago...

I haven't bought the new version, but as far as i can tell the differences are 3 songs added, a whole bunch of songs removed, & new cover art. I don't remember the original master being all that bad; & I also don't remember many of the performances being all that good.

I have not heard this new compilation, but I'm not bothering with it--it should be pointed out, however, that I'm not much of an S & G or a Buffalo Springfield fan.

(Ironically, considering I love the boxed set, I've never been much of a fan of any of what I think of as the "California" bands of the late 60's--the Byrds, the Doors, Buffalo Springfield, C, S & N, the Eagles, etc. all tend to annoy and bore me for some reason, and I've also never subscribed to the notion that Big Brother & The Holding Company was an outstanding band unfairly overshadowed by Janis Joplin. But I digress.)

There's just wayyyyyyyyyyy too much good stuff missing from this 2-disc comp.
