1.) Who has been to more than one comic book convention?
I have been to so many, I've lost count. In Atlanta, Savannah, Columbus (GA and OH), Charlotte, Columbia, Orlando, San Francisco, San Jose, Fairfax

2.) When was your first one?
Heroes Aren't Hard To Find Con 1983 (?)

3.) What was the biggest one you've been to?
Biggest was probably Mega-Con in Orlando.

4.) Who was the first professional comic book creator that you met?
Gentleman George Perez (we sang show tunes together! :))

5.) What's the most expensive comic you've bought at a con?
Paid $50 for a Fantastic Four #4.

6.) What's the best rate you've gotten for comics at a con?
At the very last "John Con" in Columbia, SC you could "build your own box" of comics for $30. Averaged out to less than .10 per comic.

7.) How much were the vending machine sodas selling for at the last con you went to?
Couldn't tell ya. Anybody remember what the vending machine rates were at Mid-Ohio Con?

8.) What's your most memorable convention experience?
Meeting all those folks at Mid-Ohio Con that I'd only known on-line.

9.) Have you ever purchased a sketch at a con?
Many.

10.) What's the best impromptu show you've been to (as in you didn't know the con was scheduled until the last minute?)
Don't think I've ever been to one that I didn't plan for...

11.) Is there a difference between a comic book convention and show?
Cons have guests.

12.) Have you met Marty Nodell (creator of Green Lantern and convention goer extreme?)
Yup.

EXTRA CREDIT: Have you bought one of Marty's mousepads?
Not yet. Next show, I promise!

Who has been to more than one comic book convention?
I'm one of them.

When was your first one?
I'm guessing around summer of 1991.

What was the biggest one you've been to?
WizardWorld Chicago in 2002.

Who was the first professional comic book creator that you met?
Dave Sim and Gerhard, though if you want to be completely accurate, Gerhard.

What's the most expensive comic you've bought at a con?
$10 for "Strangers in Paradise" #2.

What's the best rate you've gotten for comics at a con?
Last minutes of a show and the dealer didn't want to load the box back in his car so I got a box of "FF"s, bunch of "New Universe" stuff and some Neal Adams comics for $10.

How much were the vending machine sodas selling for at the last con you went to?
Never bought soda when I could buy comics.

What's your most memorable convention experience?
Plenty of memories, but no one story stands out.

Have you ever purchased a sketch at a con?
Yes.

What's the best impromptu show you've been to (as in you didn't know the con was scheduled until the last minute?)
I was passing thru San Diego on a family trip one year and found out there was a small con going on that day only. Picked up a few things for my collection, but the best parts were the guests. Since it was small and sparsely attended; I got to talk with Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Larry Stroman, and Whilce Portacio (Marc Silvestri was a no show).

Is there a difference between a comic book convention and show?
For me, a show is just comics and a convention has guests.

Have you met Marty Nodell (creator of Green Lantern and convention goer extreme?)
Yes.

EXTRA CREDIT: Have you bought one of Marty's mousepads?
No, but I bought a very nice full color drawing of Green Lantern from Martin and his wife, Carrie.

1.) Who has been to more than one comic book convention?
I've been to three, San Diego Con, a smaller one in L.A., and one in Seattle.

2.) When was your first one?
1980 San Diego Comic Con

3.) What was the biggest one you've been to?
1980 San Diego Comic Con

4.) Who was the first professional comic book creator that you met?
I don't remember which came first- I met both Ernie Chan and Brent Anderson at the San Diego con.

5.) What's the most expensive comic you've bought at a con?
Never bought an expensive comic at a con (looked for deals, mostly), however I did part with a twenty for an Amazing Spider-Man piece of original art (#191 Splash).

6.) What's the best rate you've gotten for comics at a con?
Dunno... probably a set of six "mini comics" (Twilight Zone, Daffy Duck, Uncle Scrooge, and a few others) for a $5. Seemed like a deal at the time.

7.) How much were the vending machine sodas selling for at the last con you went to?
I don't recall.

8.) What's your most memorable convention experience?
Going to the San Diego con with a couple of my friends - we were in the 7th grade and their mom drove us down for a day while we went to the SHOW. It was an unforgettable experience.

9.) Have you ever purchased a sketch at a con?
Nope.

10.) What's the best impromptu show you've been to (as in you didn't know the con was scheduled until the last minute?)
Never been to an impromptu SHOW.

11.) Is there a difference between a comic book convention and show? I didn't learn about SHOW until the last year or so... before that, they were all cons to me.

12.) Have you met Marty Nodell (creator of Green Lantern and convention goer extreme?) Never met Marty - but hope to. Legend...

1.) Who has been to more than one comic book convention?
Oo! Oo! Me!

2.) When was your first one?
Portland Comic Book Show, sometime in the early '90s.

3.) What was the biggest one you've been to?
Wizard World Chicago 2004.

4.) Who was the first professional comic book creator that you met?
Randy Emberlin, Spider-Man inker extraordinaire. I met Tom DeFalco at the same show.

5.) What's the most expensive comic you've bought at a con?
I paid $20 for a Detective Comics 80-Page Giant. At one time I was on a collecting kick for those things.

6.) What's the best rate you've gotten for comics at a con?
I find tons of great deals in the quarter bin! The best rate is probably those booths that do trades for 50% off. Nice!

7.) How much were the vending machine sodas selling for at the last con you went to?
Too much!

8.) What's your most memorable convention experience?
Wizard World Chicago 2004. My first portfolio review! Erik Larsen shot me down cold. "All right, I can tell you right now, this isn't going to work." were his first words.

Never.

Not yet!

Does it count if I've met creators but haven't been to cons? :)

1.) Who has been to more than one comic book convention?

Uh, way more than one. Probably in the dozens, but less than a hundred, I think.

2.) When was your first one?

Phoenix VI, Portland Oregon. I can't recall the year, but I'll look it up and get back to you.

3.) What was the biggest one you've been to?

Uhm, prolly a Seattle area con with Stan Lee.

4.) Who was the first professional comic book creator that you met?

Either Brent Anderson, Arthur Adams, or Paul Gulacy.

5.) What's the most expensive comic you've bought at a con?

Strange Tales #110, fer about $90.

6.) What's the best rate you've gotten for comics at a con?

Selling? I was blown away by some of the prices I got. I also "sold" a PILE of the most expensive Marvel stuff I had at one con when it got stolen out of my car the night before, and the insurance company "bought" them at full book value. $2100! Buying? Uhm, a pile of Kirby's DC stuff for about .75 each.

8.) What's your most memorable convention experience?

Dave Stevens and I helping each other load our respective piles of stuff into our cars in Portland (I think). Brinke had come by earlier, so I wuz in awe.
Frank Miller glaring at me all day at a con in...the Great Pacific Northwest. Somewhere.

9.) Have you ever purchased a sketch at a con?

Sure! One of my favourites is a Bill WIllingham Phoenix. I also have a cool Kerry Gammill, but its not a con sketch.

10.) What's the best impromptu show you've been to (as in you didn't know the con was scheduled until the last minute?)

I raced to Charlotte one year and did a whirlwind buying/selling spree, feeding my next purchases with Magic and comic sales as I ran around with my ass on fire.

11.) Is there a difference between a comic book convention and show?

Of course, but it cannot be explained in mortal terms!

12.) Have you met Marty Nodell (creator of Green Lantern and convention goer extreme?)

Of course, at one of his earliest "re-emergence" cons, in Eugene Oregon (I think, again)

EXTRA CREDIT: Have you bought one of Marty's mousepads?

He didn't have 'em the last time I saw him. I will next time.

Re: Leo's (not quite) 20 questions

1.) Who has been to more than one comic convention?

I've been to many, as a fan and a creator.

2.) When was your first one?

I'm not sure, probably 1978 or 79. One of the old Creation cons in NYC.

3.) What was the biggest one you've been to?

The last con at the Jacob Javits Center back in 1995.

4.) Who was the first professional comic book creator that you met?

I think it was Brent Anderson, when he was drawing Ka-Zar.

5.) What's the most expensive comic you bought at a con?

Uncanny X-Men #100 for (I think) $20.

6.) What's the best rate you've gotten for comics at a con?

I haven't sold comics (I haven't made) at con since I was a wee lad and don't remember any of the prices.

7.) How much were the vending soda machines at the last con you went to?

I don't recall. But con prices for terrible food are usually outrageous.

8.) What's your most memorable Convention experience?

Sharing a table with Dave Cockrum and his wife at a Ramapo High School con. Very nice people. Meeting John Buscema, Joe Sinnott (actually I met him in Ramapo, as well), Joe Kubert, Bernie Wrightson, Julius Schwartz, Dan DeCarlo and having breakfast with Lee Weeks at a con in White Plains NY in 2000. It was a con for old time creators ( that made no money) and I shared a table with Andy Fish. The best part is being treated like a fellow creator by these giants of the industry even though I was nervous as hell!

9.) Have you ever purchased a sketch at a con?

No, but I've sold some.

10.) What was the best impromptu show you've been to?

Well, It was a show I knew about but couldn't get to and I showed up late and got the autograph of Sibby Sisti, an old time Boston Brave for my Dad. I also, went to a after-con party at Mars 2112 in NYC and met Frank Gorshin (quickly) and Yvonne Craig and her sister! She is a really nice person and spoke with my wife at length. There is group photo of my wife, my partner, me and a few others and Ms. Craig somewhere that I've never seen.

11.)Is there a differnce between a comic book convention and show?

Not that I know of.

12.) Have you met Marty Nodell?

Yes, he is a very nice man and often sat next to Irwin Hasen, who was one of my instructers at the School of Visual Arts.

EXTRA CREDIT: Have you bought one of Marty's mousepads?

No, he didn't have them.

1.) Who has been to more than one comic book convention?

I've been at three-to-five a year for the past five years.

2.) When was your first one?

First one I went to was (though I didn't realize what it was called, or that it was a big deal) the Mid-Ohio Con in 1992.

3.) What was the biggest one you've been to?

San Diego Comic-Con, which gets bigger every year but at the same time seems to have fewer comic every year.

4.) Who was the first professional comic book creator that you met?

Pretty sure that it was Paul Ryan, who was drawing Fantastic Four and Ravage 2099 at the time. I met Larry Stroman (of Peter David's X-Factor), John Byrne and Roger Stern at the same show.

5.) What's the most expensive comic you've bought at a con?

I bought the Mad Archives (DC) for $40 or so, not long after it came out. As far as individual issues, probably somewhere between $10 and $20 on some Jack Kirby Fantastic Four and Jimmy Olsen comics.

6.) What's the best rate you've gotten for comics at a con?

I bought a complete run of Miracleman at a buck apiece in the late 1990s, and I just sold them off on ebay for a lot more than that. At one of the same conventions (at a hotel in Boston), I bought a really nice copy of Fantastic Four #52 for about $10.

7.) How much were the vending machine sodas selling for at the last con you went to?

Don't remember the vending machines, but I remember giving my wife $20 to buy us some hot dogs and Cokes at Comic-Con and getting back less than $5 in change. That was a few years ago, too...

8.) What's your most memorable convention experience?

They all blur together after a while, but I'd say that meeting Will Eisner, Stan Lee and John Romita are pretty high up there on my list.

9.) Have you ever purchased a sketch at a con?

Haven't paid for sketches, but I have paid for Jim Lee's and Frank Miller's autographs. The money went to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (http://www.cbldf.org), plus it meant that I didn't have to brave the hours-long autograph lines for them elsewhere at Comic-Con.

10.) What's the best impromptu show you've been to (as in you didn't know the con was scheduled until the last minute?)

Probably one of the conventions I went to in Boston, just for the sheer amount of stuff I'd buy at those cons. I'd scrape up about $200 and come home from each one with back-breaking piles of comics.

11.) Is there a difference between a comic book convention and show?

As far as I can figure, a "show" is a one-day thing, and a "convention" is a multiple-day thing. which is bigger in scale and in terms of how many special guests will be attending.

12.) Have you met Marty Nodell (creator of Green Lantern and convention goer extreme?)

Haven't yet, but I hope to pick up a Green Lantern Archives edition from him one of these years.

I have.

2002 Baltimore ComicCon.

I've never met a comic book professional in person.

I don't know. Cost less than $10. I won't pay more than that for a book.

At the last one I went to there was a box full of $.50 or $1.00 comics. Good stuff.

Don't know.

At the first Baltimore ComicCon, my little brother won a drawing for $25 worth of comics and such, or something like that. He had no use for it so I got lots of extra comics. I believe I used it to buy the "Gang War" storyline from ASM.

1.) Who has been to more than one comic book convention?
I've probably been to around 20.

2.) When was your first one?
It would've been late 1984 or early 1985.

3.) What was the biggest one you've been to?
I've been to MegaCon numerous times, but there was one I went to in L.A. that may've been bigger (more on that later.)

4.) Who was the first professional comic book creator that you met?
Richard Howell in 1986 at Jim Ivey's ORLANDOcon. He had the artwork for the cover to Hawkman #6. That was the first time I'd seen original artwork and it was an impressive cover.

5.) What's the most expensive comic you've bought at a con?
I'm not entirely sure, but it was probably less than $15.

6.) What's the best rate you've gotten for comics at a con?
As a buyer I recall a 10 for a dollar box one time. As a seller I sold some Neil Gaiman Sandman's and Todd McFarlane Amazing Spider-Man's for around $15 - $20 each and a few others for a really good trade.

7.) How much were the vending machine sodas selling for at the last con you went to?
I don't know about the Tampa Comic & Toy convention, but at the MegaCon in 2004, they were around $3 a 20 oz bottle.

8.) What's your most memorable convention experience?
Seeing George Perez at the MegaCon in '94. I didn't get to meet him at that one. He had a line around the room, but I was so impressed with how dedicated he was. He sat at that table from start to finish and even missed sitting on a discussion panel with Dick Giordano, Gil Kane and Howard Chaykin so that he could keep signing autographs. I finally got to meet him at the MegaCon '98 after various onling "chatting" at AOL.

9.) Have you ever purchased a sketch at a con?
Not specifically. I tried to get George Perez and John Byrne to do sketches at the '98 MegaCon, but when I asked them ahead of time on AOL, they said they weren't doing sketches that much anymore at cons. I did purchase a pre-drawn image of Captain America and Alan (Green Lantern) Scott from Marty Nodell.

10.) What's the best impromptu show you've been to (as in you didn't know the con was scheduled until the last minute?)
The L.A. convention. I was in L.A. one summer and saw an ad for a one day convention. I think it was in the Shriner's Auditorium. This was in 1990. They had the producers and star of the forthcoming Flash TV show there with preview footage. The place was huge, with lots of comics for sale.

11.) Is there a difference between a comic book convention and show?
I often hear fans calling it conventions and the creators and retailers calling it a show.

12.) Have you met Marty Nodell (creator of Green Lantern and convention goer extreme?)
Yes. He's been at numerous conventions I've been to, but I finally took the oppurtunity to meet him last November at the Tampa Comic & Toy Convention in Tampa.
EXTRA CREDIT: Have you bought one of Marty's mousepads?
A mousepad with a drawing of the Pillsbury Doughboy and the aforementioned Green Lantern/Captain America sketch.

Mike, that Shriners' con seems like a really good deal. I didn't realize they had it that often. My visit to LA was in the summer time and they had it a week or so before San Diego. So I figured it was a pre-San Diego Con event.

If it's multiple times a year, then I'm jealous of you left coasters.
