Kiss Reportedly Digging Deep for Expanded ‘Alive! 50′ Box Set

Kiss are reportedly planning to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their 1975 commercial breakthrough Alive! with an expanded version of the double live album.

The record helped the band break through to a mainstream audience, after they had spent years building a reputation as an amazing live act that somehow couldn't sell studio albums.

In a recent interview on former Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French's podcast (embedded below, starts at about the 57-minute mark), original Alive! producer Eddie Kramer reveals he spent over a month and a half working on the new collection.

"It's a project I spent 46 days mixing," Kramer explained. "It's called Kiss Alive! 50, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Alive! album, which was mixed at Electric Lady in 1975, you know, 50 years ago. Fortunately, they found all the bloody tapes, thank God! It was incredible."

The original album, which the band has admitted was sweetened with a heavy dose of studio overdubs, was recorded at four different shows in May, June and July of 1975. The band also recorded some of their daytime rehearsals, a decision that saved the day according to Kramer.

"I mixed every single show that actually contributed to the final one plus all the rehearsals that Gene [Simmons] and Paul [Stanley] said 'we gotta record in the afternoon,' which they did thank God because we were able to capture some fantastic performances," Kramer continues. "But what you hear during this period is that those guys were serious about getting this record out and making it sound fantastic. And then I mixed the final album in Dolby Atmos, so it's a beautiful package that's coming out, I think, late fall."

As Kramer notes, the release plans for the Kiss Alive! 50 box set have not been confirmed.

For Kiss, Atmos mix = super deluxe box set = crap-load of paper included = $300 price-tag (at least). I may be in if I can get it at half-price. Would just like to point out that Foreigner is releasing a 4 CD, 1 Blu-ray with Atmos mix collection that has a $50 retail.

Jeez I’m still waiting for Destroyer to go down in price, guess that will never happen!

Udiscovermusic (Universal's website) had both box sets at 50% off awhile back. If they did it before, they probably will again sometime in the future. I got the Destroyer, Creatures and Use Your Illusions boxes all at the same time. It's not rare for Udiscovermusic to run sitewide 30% off sales, but it's not that common to see anything at 50% off in that shop. Maybe look back around Black Friday.

I personally did not think the Destroyer box was all that great. I liked the Creatures set much more.

I actually was in the mixing studio of Sterling Sound NYC in 2006 when the KISS ALIVE tapes were being remastered the last time almost 2 decades ago for the KISS ALIVE box set 1975-2000. Yep I was a guest of Bill L and got to meet engineer George Marino as he was working on the tapes. Got to hold them in my hand and gave my input on the sound. :)

So yes, I will be buying a remix of KISS ALIVE in Dolby Atmos!

It's rumored now that the box will include the four live shows recorded for Alive!, remixed from the multitracks without overdubs. Eddie Kramer said he mixed 46 tracks, so that sounds about right.

Confirmed, as already noted, that the box will include the original album, remixed into dolby atmos.

No word if hi-res stereo or DTS 5.1 mixes of the original will be included as well.

Well, hopefully Gene and Paul won't make us mortgage our houses to buy it.

I've read that they played two shows on the same day in Davenport, Iowa, and both of the shows were recorded. If true (which it may not be), that would bring it to five shows that were recorded. Also, 46 tracks seems light for 4 shows. Even if the guitar solo gets included in She and the drum solo in 100,000 Years, they did 14 songs in Cleveland, 13 songs in one of the Davenport shows, 14 songs in New Jersey. 13 songs on average would make 52 total...46 seems to be a few short.

I hope they don't read your post - because they'd most likely adopt that as a business strategy. :ohyes:
