LOS ANGELES — Tom Lehrer, the popular and erudite song satirist who lampooned marriage, politics, racism and the Cold War, then largely abandoned his music career to return to teaching math at Harvard and other universities, died Saturday. He was 97.

Longtime friend David Herder said Mr. Lehrer died Saturday at his home in Cambridge, Mass. He did not specify a cause of death.

Mr. Lehrer had remained on the math faculty of the University of California at Santa Cruz well into his late 70s. In 2020, he even turned away from his own copyright, granting the public permission to use his lyrics in any format without any fee in return.

A Harvard prodigy (he had earned a math degree from the institution at age 18), Mr. Lehrer soon turned his very sharp mind to old traditions and current events. His songs included "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park," "The Old Dope Peddler" (set to a tune reminiscent of "The Old Lamplighter"), "Be Prepared" (in which he mocked the Boy Scouts) and "The Vatican Rag," in which Mr. Lehrer, an atheist, poked at the rites and ceremonies of the Roman Catholic Church. (Sample lyrics: “Get down on your knees, fiddle with your rosaries. Bow your head with great respect, and genuflect, genuflect, genuflect.”)

Accompanying himself on piano, he performed the songs in a colorful style reminiscent of such musical heroes as Gilbert and Sullivan and Stephen Sondheim, the latter a lifelong friend. Mr. Lehrer was often likened to such contemporaries as Allen Sherman and Stan Freberg for his comic riffs on culture and politics and he was cited by Randy Newman and “Weird Al” Jankovic among others as an influence.

Damn, this one hits hard. I've been listening to Tom Lehrer since the 1970s. I don't remember where or when I first heard him, but I listened to him the most on Dr. Demento. Such intelligent, witty humor. And he walked away from it all, then later waived all rights to his music and lyrics (not the performances), so people could use his material in any way. The dude was absolutely unique. And I'm not embarrassed to say there are things that I remember solely because of his songs.

"Poisoning Pigeons In The Park", "The Masochism Tango", "Oedipus Rex", "The Elements", "So Long, Mom", "The Vatican Rag", "We Will All Go Together When We Go", and so many more. And his intros could be as funny - and caustic - as the songs themselves were. A truly legendary figure.

RIP, sir, and no thanks can ever be enough.

His “That Was The Year That Was” album was one of the first albums I owned, and the first I can remember purchasing with my own money. I first heard the album (and Tom Lehrer) when a teacher brought it to school, and played it for the class. (I was in elementary school at the time). I saved my money, and ended up ordering it from J.C. Penney. (J.C. Penney had a small record department back in those days). I can’t say that I understood all of the subject matter at that age, but I enjoyed the songs. My favorites included “The Bomb”, “Werhner Von Braun”, “The Vatican Rag”, “Smut”, “National Brotherhood Week” (and to a lesser degree) “New Math”.

R.I.P. Mr. Lehrer
