I am trying to spread the word about this great program while it still exists:
America the Beautiful-The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Access PassQuote:
What is the America the Beautiful—the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Access Pass? The Access Pass is part of the America the Beautiful— the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass series and is available free for US citizens or permanent residents with permanent disabilities.
Who is eligible to get an Access Pass? The Access Pass may be issued to US citizens or permanent residents of any age that have been medically determined to have a permanent disability (does not have to be a 100% disability) that severely limits one or more major life activities.
What documentation do I need to show I’m eligible?Along with a valid photo ID such as a US passport, driver’s license, or state-issued ID, you must provide documentation of permanent disability with one of the following:
- A statement by a licensed physician. Statement must include that the individual has a permanent disability, that it severely limits one or more aspects of their daily life, and the nature of those limitations.
- A document issued by federal agency such as the Veteran's Administration, Social Security Disability Income or, Supplemental Security Income.
- A document issued by a state agency such as a vocational rehabilitation agency.
The pass is good for admission to more than 2,000 parks and recreational areas in the US, and provides discounts for some tours and site fees.
I got mine for type 1 diabetes. A vast number of disabilities are eligible. They don't need to be physical nature, just limiting and permanent. Migraines and ADHD are eligible, for example. A competent medical office should be able to generate the letter, but may need some help. My application was initially rejected, because the letter must include the exact phrases "individual has a PERMANENT disability" and ''severely limits one or more aspects of their daily life".
Other than a $10 processing fee, the pass is free. It is good for a lifetime and does not expire.
