The 40th anniversary re-issue of ‘Pyromania’ has been expanded as a 4 CD + 1 Blu-ray deluxe package containing unheard demos & live shows from the era.

Originally released in 1983, the album sold over 10 million copies and earned Def Leppard a prestigious Diamond award early in their historical careers. Pyromania launched the band into rock legend status, featuring global hit singles ‘Photograph’, ‘Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)’ and ‘Rock of Ages’. In tribute to this milestone, this deluxe edition has been executive produced by lead singer Joe Elliott and Ronan McHugh with mastering by Andy Pearce.

The package expansion includes a Blu-ray containing an Atmos mix of the album (overseen by Giles Martin) and a book with rare photos by Ross Halfin and new interviews with band members.

Retail is $100...meaning it will likely dip below $80 not to long after it's release. Disc #2, the Blu-ray, and most importantly....ANDY PEARCE MASTERING!!!!!! make this one an easy purchase.

Despite the Andy Pearce mastering, this isn't any sonic upgrade over the last version IMO. I did A/B comparisons of the main album and the Live in LA disc to the versions that were in the CD box #1 set and I couldn't really hear any significant difference. Then I went to the trusty old DR meter. Pyromania from the CD box set 1 was a DR8 and in this box is also a DR8. Peak and RMS levels are different, so it is different mastering. LA live disc was a DR8 in the CD box set 1 and in this super deluxe it is a DR9. Again, my ears could not hear any significant difference. I strongly suspect they just sent digital files to Pearce and he did a slight tweek so they could slap "remastered" on it.

I did enjoy disc 2 and the new stereo mix on the Blu-ray is what it says it is...an actual remix. Not so obvious on some of the earlier songs on the record, but the back half has some notable differences.

I'd rate this one a slight disappointment. Not terrible, but certainly not essential. The Early Years set was a much, much better buy IMO.

It doesn't make any sense. What would sell better is if they just released the live shows as a 2-disc set.

The major labels are convinced that people will only buy deluxe editions, not random live releases that aren't tied in to a hit album.

The LA live disc had already been released twice already. It was originally the bonus disc in a 2 CD deluxe version of Pyromania. Then it was released as one of the discs in the Def Leppard CD Collection Volume 1.

The other live disc is an abbreviated 6 song set (part of a large festival) and runs just under 28 minutes.

I don't think there would have been a market for a 2 disc set of these shows.

The LA show contains all the songs that were performed, but has been edited. Assuming they still have all of the original show, what they should have done was restore that full show to it's entirety, put it on 2 discs, and then tack the <28 minute German show onto the end of the second disc.

That's what I was talking about. I have the 'deluxe' edition from around 2006-07 with the live stuff. Just a complete show is what we want. Releasing a deluxe every 5 years is unappealing.
