I'm not sure this cow needs milked anymore. While I think there are probably some potentially good movies that could be made from the appendices of LOTR, more Gollum isn't something anyone is clamoring for, surely.

There was a Gollum game that came out a year or so ago which was a terrible bomb.

I think the owners of the property are trying to get back that "feel" it had -- in the same way the Star Wars franchise had a certain musical style and tone that felt familiar, the Peter Jackson LOTR has a vibe, music, and visual aesthetic that could be timless.

So Andy Serkis is a link to the past to have a similar voice.

That Amazon show did not have the same appeal -- it seemed like they were playing to the political moment in time, instead of the timless feel of LOTR. Only cost them a billion to find out.

Someone needs to do the Silmarillion properly.

:ohyes:
Sounds like what Roger Ebert used to call "a filmed deal".

Trying to film the Silmarillion sounds a bit like the game of thermonuclear war. The only winning move would be not to play.

After pondering the matter for at least 15 seconds, I wonder if the problem is Hollywood-types taking a story people love (LOTR and The Hobbit) and mistakenly assuming it's a world people love and want to keep going back to.

Well they must have been happy with the show since it's getting another season. I haven't watched it at all, not even a trailer, so I have no opinion on it. After the bloatedness of the Hobbit trilogy I don't have a lot of confidence in any LOTR related film/series. To make that one watchable you had to go to fan edits that trimmed it down to a 4 hour film due to all the unnecessary nonsense they added in.

The music and style of the new one is a different direction, more like a Batman reboot. They bypassed path of going with a Star Wars type of unified feel. I just think this new project is something no one asked fir, but will be "branded" more like a franchise that has continuity with LOTR.

Like they did with Hobbit. They practically tried to bootstrap into LOTR.
