Includes the hit Young, Gifted, & Black, released in 1972, which hit #2 on Billboard’s R&B albums survey and #11 on the Billboard Top 200 as well as being certified GOLD.

Aretha won the 1972 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance the album ranked at number 388 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

How did these Atlantic albums wind up being rereleased through BMG? Shouldn't they be on Rhino?

We're going to see more and more such multi-album collections on BMG, and hopefully many of them will be nicely expanded like Aretha. Warner doesn't want to do these kinds of releases anymore.

That's intriguing. I didn't know BMG was interested in licensing from other labels. I've always thought BMG/RCA was one of the labels with the poorest catalogue reissue programs, where Warner has always been great at producing box sets, archival releases and expanded editions.

BMG has been independent for a few years now. They've positioned themselves as a heritage label for new releases by veteran artists, and lately they're also been licensing vault material.

I think the only BMG releases I've really paid attention to lately is the KInks reissues.
