John Romita was Marvel to me. All the characters looked "right" when he handled them. Not to downlplay the other legends, but whenever I think of a character design, I see Romita art. RIP

It gets over used, but he really was one of the all-time greats. For many (including me) the definitive Spider-Man artist. RIP.

Farewell to a legend and a huge part of my life as a fan / artist. The core of the 60s Marvel Bullpen has taken it on the chin over the past 10 years or so. I think right now, it's just down to Larry Lieber and Roy Thomas? Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, Don Heck, Big John Buscema, Sol Brodsky, Joe Sinnott, Vince Colletta, Chic Stone, Dick Ayers, Artie Simek, Wallace Wood, Flo Steinberg, and now the incomparable John Romita Senior... all in the bullpen in the sky. We'll never see their like again. Jeff wrote: John Romita was Marvel to me. All the characters looked "right" when he handled them. RIP His art was used on all the licensing stuff through the early 90s, before the McFarlane Spider-Man became the model, so he really did feel like the "official" Marvel artist. Before I ever saw a John Romita comic book, or a comic book at all, my first experience was seeing the Marvel characters on t-shirts, posters, advertising, etc. with art like this --

Yep, as Art Director he was the model. And he was the best choice too.

One crazy thing to remember is that Romita had the inenviable task of following Steve Ditko on Spider-Man and Jack Kirby on Fantastic Four! I can't think of two harder assignments for an artist, both on a creative and commercial level. He really showed his versatility by trying to emulate both artist s approach to storytelling. Look at these pages -- while the drawing style is still unmistakably Romita, it's very impressive how he's able to imitate the storytelling styles of two Hall of Famers. First, Ditko -- And now, Kirby --

I always say that the most fun I had doing the old Comic Book Show TV show was when we spent the day at George Perez's house. But the best interview was with one of my all-time favorite artists, John Romita Sr. What a gentleman and an absolute delight to talk to.
As a young and very shy kid, his depiction of Gwen was one of my first hard crushes. Besides being beautiful, how she saw something in Peter, and fell for him over the flashier types (pun intended) made me love her to this day and believe she is and always will be Peter's true love.
He made a huge impact on me, as I am sure he has on so many others.

I have been recently shoring up my Amazing Spider-man collection and the majority of the books I have been buying were JR SR's work. His covers and iconic take on Spider-man is second to none. I mean I love Ditko, obviously, but Romita brought everything to a whole other level of awesomeness. Sad day.

Such a legend. RIP Mr. Romita
Happened to notice this made the CNN news crawl, so this is officially real, big, international news.

Great artist, and also someone who doesn’t get enough credit for his fine writing work. As a kid I bought into the Stan Lee myth, and I was surprised years later to find out most of the plotting on Spidey was done by Romita.
I think we’re down to just four guys left who drew Marvel comics in the 60s… Larry Leiber, Steranko, Barry Smith, and Sal Buscema.

Nice way to pay tribute to Romita Sr.'s storytelling versatility, Hanzo. It's good to be reminded that there's more to comics art than just drawing style. Visual storytelling means a lot too, and there are different approaches to it.

My ex-producer stole my originals but I have some VHS copies I have been meaning to digitize one of these days. It was a fun show, and it's how I became friendly with a lot of the creators.
