He was also on the Cincinnati city council, later mayor (after a scandal got him to resign from council), and a local news anchor for some years. When his show started he tried to do serious subject matter and commentary, but the ratings were tanking, so he turned to craziness. Eventually, they couldn't find enough real crazy people (or they weren't crazy enough to raise the bar?) and the show became like a white trash WWE, completely staged. I didn't watch his show, but I do have fond memories of him on channel 5 here locally. RIP.

I've only seen bits and pieces of this show online as I was never a daytime TV viewer (which is when this aired in Australia, years ago). It looked...well, staged...but I suspect I've only seen the later ones with the guys in tee-shirts that said 'security' running in and stopping people from 'attacking' each other.

Simon, Stewart Lee co-wrote a show called JErry Springer, The Opera, which might be of interest to you. IT fell foul of blasphemy laws, got the BBC sued, and was responsible for the laws in the UK being changed.
