By Allen's request in his Best DC Comics according to the "experts" at Games Radar thread, here's my top ten list of the best DC comics:

10. Superman 181 ("The Superman Of 2965")
9. Superboy 105 ("The Simpleton Of Steel")
8. World's Finest Comics 142 ("The Composite Superman")
7. Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane 5 ("The Fattest Girl In Metropolis")
6. Showcase 73 ("The Coming Of The Creeper")
5. World's Finest Comics 159 ("The Cape And Cowl Crooks")
4. Adventure Comics 354 ("The Adult Legion")
3. Superman 162 ("The Amazing Story Of Superman-Red And Superman-Blue")
2. Justice League Of America 29 ("Crisis On Earth-Three")
1. Detective Comics 359 ("The Million Dollar Debut Of Batgirl")

These are probably my favourite stories, listed in very rough order of preference. My favourites, because I honestly don't know the criteria for "best DC comics", I only care about what I like -- which should be all that any of us consider when building a collection. A list of 30 favourite DC comics would have been a lot easier to compile as I felt that I was leaving out so many other issues that I regularly re-read to this day.

Now, you guys list your own top ten of "best DC comics". Although this thread will never be the OFFICIAL list that Games Radar's certified experts chose, let's do our best in our humble, unofficial way.

I knew which of yours was number 1

I love your list but the ones that stick out for me are.

World's Finest Comics 159 ("The Cape And Cowl Crooks") is one of my absolute faves and those costumes really stuck with me as a kid

Superman 162 ("The Amazing Story Of Superman-Red And Superman-Blue") is on my list of greatest stories ever, DC or not

World's Finest Comics 142 ("The Composite Superman") is also amazing

Hmm...okay...

10. Weird War Tales #112 (The Creature Commandos)

9. Infinity Inc. #7 (Older Superman versus Power Girl)

8. Ambush Bug #1 (1985)

7. Zatanna Special #1 (1988)

6. DC Comics Presents Superman and The Atomic Knights "Great Atomic War of 1986"

5. Kamandi The Last Boy On Earth #59 (Kamandi and OMAC)

4. Angel & The Ape #1 (1968)

3. Best of DC Blue Ribbon Digest #59: Superman Sagas*

2. Best of DC Blue Ribbon Digest #21: Justice Society of America **

1. Watchmen (issues #1 - 12).

These were all comics I read as a kid or teenager, and which I fondly remember. Some were presented in digest form, which was common for Australia in the late 70's and early 80's. I read a ton of things from various companies in that format. My first comic (which I still have) was a Hulk reprint, in B&W, that was digest sized and which I got in a Christmas stocking when I was five.

* Reprints of The Second Coming of Superman, The One Minute of Doom, Let My People Grow

** Reprints of All Star Comics #35, The Brave & The Bold #62, DC Special #29.

I do notice that apart from Superman and Batman. Green Lantern and The Flash get mentions on these lists (not just this one), and yet Wonder Woman seems to be lacking.

For being part of DC's Big Three she never seems to cut it. Is it because DC has history of underutilising, underwriting and or just plain ignoring the character?

It's an interesting question.

I loved Wonder Woman as a kid but mostly because of the TV series.

In terms of comics I suppose I didn't gravitate towards many female characters when I was growing up. I wanted monsters and robots and general weirdness. Although that Zatanna comic somehow grabbed my attention when it came out and left an impression on me, although I can't explain why.

I never bought too many Wonder Woman comics as a kid, but the first one I got was pretty memorable: issue #206,
"War of the Wonder Women."
Click for full size
In it, Diana learned that her mother Hippolyta had fashioned two children out of clay, both brought to life by Aphrodite,
and the dark clay daughter, Nubia, was subsequently stolen by Mars and raised to be an enemy of the Amazons. And
she had a magic sword.

There was also this place caught Slaughter Island, a floating island covered by fog and mists, home of a tribe of male
warriors of Mars. And the war god directed it like a boat to carry this army (and Nubia) to places he wanted conquered.

Anyhoo, I was nine years old and to this day it still stands out to me as one of the most memorable WW stories. And
I'm sorry that I never got around to picking up issues 204–205, which contain more of the Nubia story. Don Heck's
artwork on the interior of 206 is pretty good, but even the nine-year-old Beachy wished that cover artist, Nick Cardy,
had drawn the whole book.

Yikes. I just did a search for the best Wonder Woman comics of all time, and I looked through several lists, and
while I expect most "All-Time Greatest Lists" to heavily skew toward only comics done in the last few years, it was
hard to find any list that contained any Wonder Woman stories before George Pérez started drawing her--apart from
one of the first origin stories.

I see the asking price on issue #204 on eBay is hundreds of dollars and over a thousand slabbed and in Fine condition.
But DC apparently released a Facsimile Edition this year for $3.99. I'm kind of surprised that Wonder Woman 204–206 and
Supergirl #9 (all of the pre-Crisis Nubia issues) haven't been collected in a trade or a special. Nubia was DC's first black heroine.

Well I'll be waiting for the Essentials volume in that case. ;)

I don't even read things any more. Or I rarely do, so it's okay.

I likely am forgetting some that were important to me throughout my life, but here's a list of ten in no particular order:

• Flash #123, "The Flash of Two Worlds," first DC comic to suggest parallel worlds. But, really, I used this as place holder for all of the DC Earth #-crossovers.
• Limited Collectors' Edition Vol 1 C-51 (oversized reprints of Batman #232, 242, 243, 244: Ra's al Ghul stories)
• Detective #359, "The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!"
• Superman #423 and Action Comics #583, "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?," the Superman send off story.
• Watchmen #1–12, well… it's Watchmen; it belongs on a list.
• Swamp Thing #34, "Rites of Spring," essentially a prose poem about sex.
• Shade, the Changing Man #1-9. Hey, I just love Ditko's Shade is all.
• DC 100-Page Super Spectacular #17, featuring JLA and JSA reprints, and especially "The Injustice Society of the World!" from All-Star Comics #37, a story that I read over and over again when I was sick in bed with the mumps.
• Superboy 195, "The One-Shot Hero!," first ERG-1 appearance. These types of self-sacrifice stories really moved and shaped me when I was nine years old.
• Detective #471, "The Dead Yet Live," what's not to love: Hugo Strange and Marshall Rogers, and Steve Englhart begin their run.

Wonder Woman's Rogues Gallery isn't exactly on the same level as Superman, Batman and The Flash either.

At best WW has Ares, Circe and the Cheetah. You might be able to throw Veronica Cale, Doctor Psycho and Silver Swan in there as well.

I liked the Perez run, but even then the focus wasn't primarily on super heroics, and the villains used were Ares, Cheetah, Silver Swan, Circe and Doctor Psycho.

Why not treat her as DC's version of Thor? A good blend of mythology, cosmic and super heroics.
